The Human Ouija Boards of the Telepathy Tapes (Premium E340)

The hit podcast The Telepathy Tapes claims to reveal a hidden world where nonverbal autistic people communicate telepathically, visit one another on an astral gathering place called “The Hill,” access cosmic knowledge, and perhaps even commune with psychic animals. But behind the paranormal framing is a much older and more troubling story: facilitated communication, the discredited practice that can turn vulnerable people into human Ouija boards.

In this episode, Jack looks at the ideomotor effect, Clever Hans, “letter boarding,” the career of Diane Hennacy Powell, Ky Dickens’ rise as the voice of The Telepathy Tapes, and how New Age ideas about telepathy, dark matter, the Akashic Records, savants, parrots, dogs, and morphic fields have attached themselves to the desperate desire to give non-speaking people a voice.

This is so painfully reminiscent of the people in 70s and 80s who became convinced that they could teach gorilla to communicate in sign language. I suspect Jack is aware of that period and chose not to talk about it. Honestly that was the right call to make.

My FIL just sent me a link to the telepathy tapes podcast and I wish I could send this episode to him as a reply

Its worth pointing out that most of these techniques have been tested in the following way: The facilitator and the communicator are both shown an image seperately. Sometimes the images are the same, sometimes different. Then the communicator is asked to describe what they have seen with the facilitators aid. As far as I know, none of these tests have come backb positive, they have never demonstrated that the communicator is consistently capable of delivering messages based on information that the facilitator doesn't have

Thank you for sharing this Jack💜 I've spent years of my life working with nonverbal and limited verbal people in long-term care. I feel very strongly that we *should* spend more time, attention, and resources on "listening" to them. Of course in reality what that looks like is more resources, higher staffing in care facilities, and more one on one care. As well as education about non verbal communication and seeing non verbal people as human (unfortunately not the norm 😕 particularly when staffing is low) This made me so angry. It's extractive, dehumanizing, and isolating. Why does the "communication" we are willing to listen to have to be bullshit that we are interested in or want to hear?

A
Alex · June 27, 2026

I saw Diana Hennacy at the 2026 Conscious Life Expo. She gave a presentation with a "non-verbal" child. I saw them later in the elevator. The child could speak just fine.

Regarding Jake’s claim about how Iraqi bomb “detectors” that “actually worked,” this week BtB is covering how those same devices got hundreds of people killed. It makes me wonder if a Cool Zone person listened to Spectral Voyager and was irritated by the drivel spouted by the so-called “quantum scientist.” (Could just be someone on Reddit making a rec too, I guess.)

Straight up, my highschool anatomy teacher played ‘What the Bleep do We Know’ for us as a class because she thought it was super insightful/important for us all to see. Watched it with my Dad too but he was kinda pissed I’d seen it at school.

G
Guido Falconi · June 16, 2026

For an interesting look at the idea of the morphogenetic field I suggest playing the Nonary Games on PC. The story is good, and very much sci-fi, but it did delve really deep into what the theory believes. Anyway, fuck these telepathy fuckers. There are autistic children in my family, none of them are non-verbal, but I can’t imagine letting someone take advantage of them like this.

A
AthenAltena · June 16, 2026

Funnily enough this week's Behind The Bastards also talked about the idiomotor effect and Clever Hans.

G

Dianne Hennacy Powell also did an interview with YT channel "Buddha at the gas pump" where you can hear her galaxy brained casually racist and ableist opinions. I can't remember which true crime podcast I originally heard about this nightmare from, but I had gotten it out of my brain.... Also, telepathy would have been super fucking useful last week when my nv neighbor eloped. Kiddo made his way to the corner store with $3 from the tooth fairy to buy drinks for himself and his family. This kiddo was absolutely able to communicate with the cops that found him that he would not get in their car and would let them follow him home. And yes, Jack, I love your idea for RFK jrs falcons.

So you definitely don’t have to pay $10k to give a TEDx talk — I gave one in 2016 about sexual health and it was a well-run event curated by a bunch of college students. But TEDx organizers definitely varied in credibility, and there are some insanely bad and ignorant talks out there. I also worked at TED for five years on the social media team and a good chunk of my job was doing damage control when a particularly bad TEDx talk caught steam online. We even had our own QAnon PR crisis when TED was accused of normalizing CSA because a German researcher did a TEDx talk about treating pedophilia that did not translate well to English. TEDx is a great lesson in destroying your brand by attempting to open source your platform with little oversight. I will never get back the sanity I lost in that job.

A little bit of your timeline is off but did you know Ky Dickens formed a non-profit that is pushing grant money to families to learn spelling? https://apps.apple.com/jp/app/ttt-spelling-board/id6773523125?l=en-US&platform=watch And an impact tour to do with the documentary: https://www.tttaustralia.com/ And did you know that Pastor Joe is Joe Infranco, former VP of the Alliance Defending Freedom who is responsible for trying to ban gay marriage and overturn Roe among other theocratic agendas? And Arthur Golden was disbarred for misappropriating his clients funds and then moved to Israel where he and his son are part of an ultra-orthodox community. His son "spells" prophetic messages that are embraced by rabbis and he has said a convicted rapist is the Messiah. Diane Powell and Julia Mossbridge, her 2 lynchpin scientists, are caught up in ufology, deep tech, AI, and national security circles. Mossbridge is fundraising to push spelling as civil rights issue, has come up with her own spelling method that embraces the spiritual side, wants to use tDCS on nonspeakers, and build a $10M center: https://donorbox.org/healing-hearts-mending-minds She also has a company that is pushing retro-causal AI. She has a keen interested in pre-crime becoming a valid part of national security and intelligence work and she co-hosts a podcast with 30 year CIA veteran Carmen Medina. They are trying to tie the evidence for telepathy to a tragic case of a non-verbal but not autistic 12 yo who eloped and drown in New Orleans. The telepathy tests for the film did not prove anything and they know this but will use emotional narratives to convince. The Epstein connections are very real. A lot of billionaires are backing this project and financing the film.

Only to find out no, it's another false alarm the bloody idiots must've misinterpreted from the neighbour going out or putting their rubbish out again lol - - - (An aside, love the rare Travis sass moments, even though it means you know you gone done fucked up for sure by evoking them heh)

"The spirts are telling me youre the Jane Goodal of autistics" and "-at the scientific advisory board-" is a fucking wild combination of sentences.
