The AI Powered Christian Dominionist Convention feat. Dr. Matthew Taylor (E375)
Jack LaRoche and first-time contributor Trey Grace go undercover on the National Mall for the May 17th Christian nationalist event Rededicate 250. This White House-linked rally features prayer, fasting, patriotic worship, shofar blasts, AI George Washington, and rumors about whether Trump might appear in person (he didn’t.) What begins as a sweaty field trip through Freedom250 pageantry turns into a tour of the increasingly fused worlds of Christian nationalism, the New Apostolic Reformation, Silicon Valley-backed prayer tech, AI evangelism, and Trump-era state religion cosplay.
Along the way, the episode digs into America Prays, Pray.com, Peter Thiel-adjacent religious technology, Brian Alarid’s dream of praying for every person on Earth by name, Lou Engle and Dutch Sheets’ spiritual warfare rhetoric, and the “Appeal to Heaven” flag as a Christian nationalist signal. Religious studies scholar Dr. Matthew D. Taylor joins to explain how NAR networks, charismatic prophecy, and Trumpist politics have converged into a movement that sees itself not as lobbying the state, but as reclaiming it for God.
Also: The Great Controversy, the Freedom Truck, the “algorithm of liberty,” and the ballroom theology of Eric Metaxas.

Trump 2.0/ME gave me way too much joy on Monday morning commute. I’m sure the rest of the ep on the way home will be much sadder.
I'm sleep deprived beyond belief, someone help me understand the prayer .com/.org issue and what the representative was actually saying. I feel like I'm missing something important
When I was in Christian High school we said the pledge of allegiance and the pledge to the Christian flag. Its interesting to me that the Christian flag (white with red cross in blue box) seems to have been replaced by this weird green flag.
Genuinely dark and ominous vibes in some of those speeches. Sound like something out of a history documentary.
I have a suggestion for handling redundant Jake-stories. What if Julian interrupts and just tells the Jake-story for him, but quickly and with disdain? Y’know, Julian-style.
The boys really bring out the best + keep each other in check
Isn’t believing in other (lesser) gods pagan? 🤔
That episode of "Futurama," where Bender meets god, is my FAVE! 🤣 But, aside from the humor in that episode, I thought the messages was clear: we (humanity) are all we have.
It's pretty annoying when Jake starts to reiterate someone's Point as if he's making a new point and he's not even not been listening or not understood what someone said but it really really has made me reconsider my subscription when he has to just step on Jack's joke about comet Ping Pong as if it wasn't a joke as if as if it was an accident and he was clever than the rest of us for noticing that joke about coming pink on a f****** queue and on podcast f****** idiots
🤦🤦🤦
This was honestly just a perfect episode.
as jack was reading the part at the end about as they were leaving, all I could hear was “breadcrumb trail” by slint playing in the background 😭
the subtext in that World War Z scene Jake brings up always bugs me because it implies that a) israel's segregated and genocidal nature makes them more adept at fighting zombies. b) they would bring palestinians inside the walls instead of leaving them to die. c) those palestinians would immediately fuck it up and get everyone killed, proving they should have been kept outside in the first place anyways best takeaway from that scene would be casual viewers asking themselves why there's already walls and fencing all over tel aviv.
Wild stuff. How is the ballroom bit not satire. Trey was great also
I really wanted to like the podcast Matt does, but first episode they are advertising fucking polymarket. Absolute scum, instant unsub. I know not everyone can do ad-free but anyone CAN do better than that. So disappointing!
When I was reading about pre-war Nazi Germany, I read Eric Metaxas’s biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. It was excellent, it straddled the line between popular and academic history deftly. I had no idea he was an evangelical zealot, that did not come through in his work at all. I could never imagine the thoughtful historian that wrote that biography in Trump’s orbit. Wild.
I don't know if I just heard him wrong, but did Trey say the Bible was originally all written in Hebrew? The New Testament was originally written in Greek, not Hebrew.
Great episode… man these guys are so freakily off their effing rockers. I’ve listened to Matt Taylor’s series Charismatic Revival Fury a couple of times, it’s brilliant. You think you know Jan 6th think again! I dunno Jake, your idea kinda sounds good, if only there were a way to fool these goons into thinking the rapture has happened the rest of us could just get on with our progressive little lives.
More than off their rockers, they're toxic and dangerous. Even more so for how delusional they are.
Lou Engels preaches like the old man preacher ghost in Poltergeist looks.
Thoroughly important reporting. Now, more than ever.
This reminds me of Together 2016, a similar gathering of evangelicals on the national hall that got cut short due to it being so damn hot out lol. Though the rhetoric at that event was much less hostile and seemed to be a more optimistic and focused on unity between denominations and less focused on nationality etc. Also, I'm sure you guys know this, but the handouts are a pretty regular thing at any of these huge christian events. Everyone pushing their piece of what they think their big sky daddy is all about.
I might be too nitpicky lately, but Jake and co should really know more about Christianity at this point. Considering how often it's a huge part if the topics they discuss
Then there's folks like Victor Marx in Colorado, and way too many signs for him in Colorado Springs... But we have Focus on the Family Ted Haggard (who is still preaching...)
I’m so tired of Christianity, AI, and the US. For real. Great episode, though.
Terrific Jack episode and a wonderful guest.
Reminds me of the Issac Asimov story “The Nine Billion Names of God”, which is a story any decent “tech broh” should have read when they were a kid😳😀
Of all the futures depicted in fiction, I never thought Thief 2: The Metal Age would turn out to be the most accurate.
you guys are aware that jim caviezel is linked to a major corruption scandal in Brazil rn involving the bolsonaro movie right?
Those people are not just abhorrent, they're straight up dangerous. As Jake mentioned about the mob with pitchforks, but it's not actually a joke. Those are the people who would gladly murder their neighbors' children with clubs in a genocide in the name of their god. We have to be prepared to stop them with violence if need be.
Sadly true. I’ve been learning about them for awhile on the Straight White American Jesus pod and have multiple times had the thought that these are the people who would commit an American version of the Rwandan genocide.
36:45 HARRISBURG MENTIONED - elon mailed me $100 to sign up even though i didnt actually go to the event, now i wish id gone to see peter in the flesh
Please do more episodes about the NAR and Seven Mountains
Older ep but Episode 254 about Mike Johnson goes more into the NAR and Johnson’s connections to it
Great episode, and I look forward to more field reporting from Jack and Trey. I miss the days when you guys went to weird conventions all the time (I do ofc understand why it doesn’t make sense for you to do that as much these days).
This is giving Mormons trying to save the whole world under the guise of genealogy. Also, if you translate the Bible enough, it's going to be like when you translate movie subtitles into Chinese and back again.
Church of America. It’s real
These people are demons
This is wild, and important to be aware of. Thanks for a great episode!
algorithm of liberty 🤢
Being American is so fuckin humiliating. Being talked down to about faith by an actual child rapist who transparently has 0 faith himself is genuinely maddening.
Just here to express Jack appreciation, been enjoying their contributions a lot
jack hive is fully here
Well at least Weezer released a pretty good track ft. Wednesday yesterday
Random but please do a movie night episode on Tara Reid's new covid quarantine movie, Dr. Q!
Jake sounding like Kent Brockman reading about the convention
Has anyone else had the pleasure of enjoying the Gen Z translation of the Bible? It’s like manna from heaven.
I’ve heard readings from it. It’s pretty dope actually (says this crusty old GenXer)
Jake’s idea at the end of the episode already exists, it’s called the state of Florida
And its basically also an M. Night Shayamalan movie called "the village"
In denmark New apostolic reformation translates to NAR = FOOL
WHY NO PATRON RSS FEED
There is one
ok honestly i agree with the "put a giant cross on the moon" people, not because i'm a christian but because that's the most fucking Evangelion idea i've ever heard
It would be kinda like “2001: A Space Odyssey”. Next stop Jupiter!
Scrim! 🩷
