GB Patch: Future Game Possibilities!

Hi everybody,

Since we hit (and then wildly exceeded) the top goal on the Patreon, things are going really well for us here at GB Patch Games! With so much backing, it's pretty likely that we'll be able to keep making games past the launch of Our Life: Now & Forever. I really wanna thank you all for that support. It's wonderful and encouraging that there are so many people out there who love our games. We'll do our best not to waste the opportunity to keep creating 💕

I did consider making a video to chat about this (it also would've had subtitles for those who needed/preferred to read), but the Patreon Bonus Moment release ended up having a much bigger launch than I expected, and I didn't end up having the time to set things up for a new type of update post. But we can still keep that concept in mind for potentially something else later.

Now, to start this talk about the future, the obvious thing is that we want to release the stuff we've already been working on but haven't finished! We're moving towards getting the rest of the XOXO Blood Droplets routes done, we're planning to have an Android version of Lake of Voices made, it'd be great to finally complete our mini side project Floret Bond, etc. That sort of stuff is something that'll be worked in to whatever other brand new project plans get set. So, here's what I've been thinking about-

Our Life, But Different 1:

I'm afraid we won't be able to make another game exactly like Our Life: B&A and N&F. Specifically, we can't do a third game with four time periods you live through with your next-door neighbor. I don't think I could keep it engaging for a third time, aha. But that doesn't mean we have to end the series with two entries, we could come up with ways to make the next Our Life a more unique experience. The super high MC customization would still be a part of any OL game, of course.

Right now, I have two main premises for how to continue the franchise, this is the first one: have only two time periods and the MC knows the LIs through some other method besides being neighbors.

With two time periods we'd be able to invest more into each, going into further depth/detail than the original games, and maybe we could even have a little more of a structured plot to interact with. It'd be flexible in how you went along with it, but there'd just potentially be more to the events than hanging around your town. And since the MC/LIs would only have to be in each other's lives for two sections, there'd be a much wider amount of options open for how they know one another because it wouldn't have to last for years. We could do something cute, like there's a locally owned business the MC's family tends to patronize, and it belongs to an LI's family. Then in the future the LI could be the one running the business. And maybe another LI is on the same extracurricular team as the LI after their parents both signed them up to be a part of it. The different LIs could all have their own fun, unique tie to the MC's life. We could still have it be one season for the whole game (spring or winter) or we have it where the younger part is in winter and the older part is in spring/vice versa.

Also, since we already have two modern day games about growing up, I'd be interested in making this one a quaint historical story or a cool future set one, if players wanted it. That might be very nice. It's only option one, though.

Our Life, But Different 2:

I've got another idea of a game that could also fall into the Our Life series, but it would be even more different in terms of structure than the other one. Instead of growing older with separate timeframes, we could try out going all in with letting you experience one full year knowing the LI. It could start the day you meet and then every week of the next year would have scenes about how your relationship grew/changed.

You’d get to play around with the progression of the connection a lot more. Maybe you ask them on a casual date for fun the first time you speak, maybe you barely acknowledge their presence, maybe you really click and are instantly friends, perhaps you just get their number but aren’t sure if you’ll even use it. Every week there’d be a new chance to reach out yourself, react to them reaching out, or to go about your own business because neither of you made an attempt during that time. Things could start out with meet ups in town and texts/calls then as time went on (if you grew closer) you’d get to step further into the LI’s world; seeing where they work, meeting friends/family, visiting where they live (maybe even moving in together near in the end if your relationship was going very well).

And rather than deciding if you like them platonically, romantically, or you didn’t really like them, we’d be able to get a lot more in-depth. Perhaps you’re considering them for a partner but are giving it more time before deciding, or maybe you love one side of them but can barely tolerate some other part of their personality. The LI could also have more complicated feelings about you in return.

Plus, since we could invest all the art asset energy into one period, we could try having the LI(s) get a full wardrobe of clothes instead one casual outfit and some special occasion clothes. They could change their hairstyle regularly and maybe go through different phases of facial hair over the year (if they can grow facial hair out). There'd be all sorts of neat ways we could try making it feel authentic.

This would be modern set like the prior games, since it’d definitely be going for that normal, everyday kind of feel.

Our Life Sibling Series:

And now we get to the non-Our-Life franchise idea. This would still go for all that MC/relationship customization, which it's why it's kind of like a sibling series, but everything else would be too different for it match with the OL brand. We'd be starting up a new franchise with its own name. Because while Our Life is, naturally, about jumping into the world of the game and living a life, a future game we make could instead be about becoming a part of a story and determining how it goes. Basically, there'd be little to no "slice-of-life" in the tone. We'd be replacing that with adventure, mystery, and fantasy (or something similar), possibly political intrigue and or thriller/low-key horror stuff. It'd be a tenser kind of experience.

You would not only get choose who, if anyone, you liked, but who you're going to side with in opposing groups or if you'd be going on your own. Who are you going to trust? Is there anyone you'd give up useful knowledge to or share your secrets with? What are you going to look into? There are things going on all around, but you can't be in more than once place at a time. And so on. It'd be the type of story where it's solid/intriguing enough that it could run its course as a straightforward tale, but then you come in and just get interact with all the moving parts how you want to, potentially making it go off in all sorts of other directions.

And I do mean all sorts, we'd definitely let you play as a morally gray or even unapologetically evil character. We could also have morally ambiguous/truly evil love interest options. Why not help the cause of someone who's beautiful and crushes others? You wouldn't be punished for that by me.

Now, I imagine if you're really risky/ridiculous you could end up with a bad ending in this game where you get yourself killed or in jail or something, haha. But the structure would definitely be based more around seeing what you can do in this story, rather than trying to guess what you shouldn't do. Though, on the flip side of that, there wouldn't be any perfect endings either. Unless you really only care about yourself/one other person, you'd go through unfortunate things no matter what. This wouldn't be a game where you're able to make everything wonderful for everybody in the cast at the same time. But hey, giving different characters/groups their own happy endings is what multiple playthroughs are for.

Going Off the Rails:

Lastly, we have something I don't tend to talk about but has always been there. Even before I started making games I had ideas for this that I've held onto to this day. I'm really not sure it'll ever happen, but I thought since I was doing this future games idea post that it'd be amusing to at least share with our supporters. I truly love the OL games and would happily make more like them in the future, but there is the duality of man and truthfully what I've always hoped to do as creator is a full-sized, commercial, absolutely brutal horror-mystery game, haha.

If I did actually attempt it we'd have to make secondary social media just for that project, so it wasn't present alongside our others. Because it'd be something different, not even our other horror-y games like Lake of Voices and XOXO Blood Droplets would fit with it. I want to make a game that's twisted, unfair, and vicious to the characters going through it. The exact game changes depending on when you ask. Currently there's two contenders; Black Feathers and LNF. Black Feathers is the one I've had from the beginning and LNF is more recent. Both are similar in terms of their very basic concept, they're about a group of people who live in a not good place with outside dangers while the people you're living with are just as potentially dangerous. It's common for people to die and you have to be proactive, clever, and potentially cruel yourself to survive/solve mysteries. For all these years of making VNs I've always paused in trying for Black Feathers or another project like it because I didn't feel capable of pulling it off. And at this point, the other games we make have so much value to people that I don't really think I should go so far off in another direction and invest a year or more to create my dark, horrific dream game. Though, perhaps even further in the future there will be a chance, but now you know my secret hope as a game developer, haha.

Final Thoughts:

That's all I've got at this point. I've had other game ideas over the years, but they're definitely in the 'not able to consider for the near future/if ever' pile. Please feel free to let me know what you think of any of this! Would you be happy if we went down one of these routes for the project after OL2? Is there one in particular that stands out most to you? In the future should we maybe try fleshing out multiple concepts with more specific settings/stories/characters before truly deciding on any?

Either way, thank you very much for reading this long post. I appreciate you being here ♡

How about a murder mystery based on Clue? The MC is invited to an isolated mansion along with other guests. The guests gets to mingle, gets to know the hosts (it's better to have more than one, it adds to the drama), they are allow to wander the mansion and use the rooms (such as a ballroom, atrium, indoor pool). While exploring, the MC runs into the different guests, the hosts, and the servants. Through choices, the MC gets to decide what connection they have with the others (as well as possible motives the MC and the others may have for the murder). To add to the mystery, the game could randomize who committed the murder, what was used, location of murder (instead of the typical story branches that Visual Novels follow). The persons of interest go off to bed, only to find themselves waking up in random rooms. Everybody has short-term memory loss (just like how players in Clue have no idea if the character they are playing as are indeed the murder is unless they have their character's clue card or ask another player if they have it and is handed the card by them). Along the way, the MC and the others could end up with opportunities (i.e. romantic/sexual tension, suspicions thrown at each other, trying to figure out who did what and where, etc.) to interact with each other. The twist is that there may be a mystery figure who'd actually committed the crime, but had staged it to throw suspicion elsewhere. DLC could have additional guests, locations and murder weapons from other GB games (i.e. XOXO, OL, etc.) such as Shiloh, a paper airplane dart, the indoor pool is beach themed with sand and palm trees.

I hope it's not to late to say anything here, but I wouldn't mind seeing the next generation of the OL1 and OL2 kids. This can work with the reduced Step option, and the opposing seasons would be featured (Winter and Spring). Maybe the kids are sent to boarding school, with the occasional calls from the MC from the original games with Cove/Qiu/Tamarack popping by for a visit/dropping off something like Christmas gifts. The player has a choice of which family group they are from, perhaps with the option of being an orphan being placed there (since it's a boarding school, that'd be their home, even during the holidays. If the character is an orphan, maybe there could be a chance Cove/Qiu/Tamarack could ask about adopting the new MC? First stage is first year at the boarding school, second stage is the final year.

If I have to be honest all of them are great but I'm really interested in the one where the two aren't neighbors but the love interest/friend is the son/daughter/child of the owners and the MC with family goes there (I think that this is what you meant) and the one about low-key horror where you chose who to trust and depending on your choice you die, get arrested or survive is really interesting and I like it a lot even without a romantic interest. I also had little idea but of course it's not a thing that you are forced to do since you are already did a version for the warmer months and the coldest months is in production, however you could do a game based on change of seasons, different events for different Seasons. For example in spring the city could decide to do a event based a bit on Japan where people go watch the cherry blossoms blossom (XD) and then some other events related to the season and same for the others. Sure, it doesn't really make a difference with the other two games since there are already warmer/colder times based games but it could also be a interesting concept in my opinion (even because I love spring and autumn just like the other seasons😅😂) but still I don't think it's completely a good idea because there are already months based on cold and warm seasons and probably it would be too much to do, but I have the feeling that a love/friendship story increasing season by season would be cute and it would fit with the idea of complete a year arc to know each other a bit better than the weeks idea, but of course that's your game and idea. My idea was a simple suggestion and since I'm not an expert on creating a video game I don't know if it could actually work depending on what you have in mind to do.

All of these options sound amazing, it'd be a dream come true if all of them eventually came to fruition.

I can't ignore that one of the big things that initially drew me to Our Life was the passage of time that the multiple steps created, I'll be a little sad seeing it go away. Getting to know Cove, then actually getting to be in a relationship with him, instead of the relationship just being the end goal for the game, felt personal in a way the no other VN has to me before. That said I'd still be interested in other Otome games that get released, especially if there are good LGBT+ options in them. I would love to see more stories where the MC and LI being in a relationship or married is part of the journey of the game, and not the endpoint.

I'm a fan of Our Life, But Different 2. I think it would be interesting to add some ideas from Sibling Series as well-maybe the reason you don't always connect is because you just joined an adventuring guild and are exploring that, or you're starting school for a more down to earth feel, or my even horror. I love a good haunted house or murder mystery. The game could have things like time sensitive events, bad endings, scheduling, all that stuff we love to manage and be punished/rewarded for. I'm sure any project you decide on will be great! Every idea has so much I would be excited for, and everything so far has been fantastic.

OL D1 sounds amazing!!! and the siblings games too! I looove fantasy and rpg in general Bioware is a amazing role model for things like that

All of these sound really cool to me! But I think the sibling series sounds the most interesting to me or a game with a historical setting.

OLD2 sounds really cool! Being able to experience lots of different season-specific moments like holidays and ice-skating etc. as you go through the game would be really interesting.

OL D1 or D2 are my favorite options. I really like the modern setting and I really want to experience an OL or OL-adjacent game in Spring/Winter. D2's expansive options and depth sounds really appealing to me.

I definitely agree with the comments above making sure to do something that brings you joy and/or consider a poll if you're super torn. I don't usually like stuff outside of romance or pure fluff but I tried Lake of Voices and actually really enjoyed it, likely because of all the work you all put into it. It was so story rich and fascinating that I played it a few more times with friends. So I think whatever direction you head in will be great based on your enthusiasm and my confidence in what you've created so far. Personally I really love romance so I'm most interested in a continuation of the Our Life as a series in any of the ways you described above. As I was reading the descriptions I was super drawn to the idea of staying consistent in terms of having things span across years in certain seasons but I can also see how concluding with a game that's spans a whole year would be a nice way to end the series and it'd be fun to explore that dynamic. I'm also very curious about the sibling series you described. I would love to see a futuristic visual novel since I don't typically encounter those, but I'd also be happy with a historical setting since it immediately made me think of the Cove theatre date. If you decide to move forward with the horror game, I'd definitely give it a shot even though its not my schtick because I genuinely love the rich characters and worlds you've created thus far. I'll just have to bring a cuddle buddy so I don't cry lol. But I have to admit, its kind of fun to be scared in a safe way once in a while, and so I'd look into it for sure. To surmise, follow your heart. I look forward to whatever you bring next and thanks so much for everything so far!

It is important to keep your fans happy, but at the end of the day if you have had a game idea for as long as you can remember you should also make yourself happy too. There is no time that would be good for it if you are worried about everybody else. I say go for it. I love horror theme based games. In regards to OL series I personally liked the idea to grow along each other for a full year. If I am being honest though I would probably be happy to have DLCs of Cove forever! Thank you for the post.

I am very intrigued and interested in your "Our Life Sibling Series project" because I am a fan of the fantasy genre and also RPG games with difficult choices given their consequences, I am thinking of the saga of Dragon Age created by Bioware and more particularly the first opus Origins. So I'm very happy that you are considering such a project given your talent for building deep characters and fully customizable main characters. Wishing you the best for these future projects.

WOW!! I absolutely love all of the ideas, tho if I had to choose my FAVE-favorite idea, it would probably be "OL But Different #1" particularly if it had a historical/futuristic/maybe FANTASY setting 😆. This would be closely followed by the Sibling Series, I really liked the sound of that one too 😁. Again, they all sound amazing (Tho I'm not the biggest fan of horror, but I'd love it if you could pursue your passions in your game development, so I'd still cheer you on anyway 😊👍). Can't wait to see whatever it is you guys end up doing! (Also would love to play florette bond if it was completed 😊)

Okay my favorite 2 genres is horror and romance so I'm totally down for any/all of your ideas!!! Also if any of your future games could be set in Winter I would just gobble up the whole thing in one! Love all the ideas and so happy to be a patreon member :)

A
Alfer · July 30, 2021

I really like all four concepts, since each of them would scratch different itches I have. That said, if I HAD to choose just one out of all of them I would pick the Sibling series, especially if it keeps the same character / dialogue costumization as OL. I like the idea of getting to play as a morally ambiguous character, like someone who has a good reason for going up against the "heroes" without being necessarily evil. Evil for the sake of being evil doesn't work for me anyway. Also, I'd like some choices to be hard, or at least not be the obvious good vs evil kind. ...Oh, and bittersweet endings. I mean, don't get me wrong, I like happy ever afters as much as the next guy, but there's something oddly cathartic about getting emotionally crushed sometimes. ...Ok, that came out more masochistic that I meant it to be, but you know what I mean (hopefully).

N
Nearia · July 30, 2021

Madison Honda · July 29, 2021

I like the idea of spending a long and continuous period time with LIs in OL, but Different 2 and the idea of a different genre in the OL Sibling Series. That said, I'm a sucker for all kinds of settings/time periods and will support anything y'all do :)

c
chi · July 29, 2021

I like the Our Life Different 1 option the most! Our Life different 2 still seems fun, but I like the aspect of having different time periods. And I can only begin to imagine how many options of meeting the LIs, now that it doesn't have to be tied to the childhood friend trope!

C
Cinnay · July 29, 2021

Regarding OL, I would definitely prefer the first option as a third entry, but as for the next game in general, I have to say that the OL-Sibling Series Idea sounds the most interesting to me. The last option doesn't sound like a bad idea either, though, I also hope that something comes of it eventually.

S
SapphicSaionji · July 27, 2021

I like the idea of Our Life, But Different 2 a lot tbh. Having an OL game with only 2 time periods like the first one is a close second, but it just feels like it wouldn't be quite enough for me? There would also have to be a lot of Moments to make it more of a proper game, with OL there was a good amount of content per moment so it felt like a filled-out game, but if you went with the first idea you'd need a lot more Moments to make it feel like a filled-out and proper game. Plus, 2 time periods isn't a lot to see the characters grow and change with time.

S
Sarriph · July 27, 2021

I love 1 & 2 because that's in part what drew me to your games: the time and effort into showing and developing the relationship progression. I love otome games, romance games, and VNs so much, but the depth that OL went into to develop relationships was just so well done for me and different from all the other stuff I've played. But on a side note; def chase your dream game as well! :) I support you!

The mere mention of a quaint historical story has me frothing at the mouth.

B
BaronInc. · July 26, 2021

They all seem like they could be done vary well. That being said I like the idea of the sibling series the most. I love those sorts of stories but I would be worried about having enough good stuff to do as well cause a lot of games will make you the goodiest of two shoes and not let you just be like a normal person like you cant ask or accept money from anyone without being a dick (even rich people who can afford it). I don't mind fail states where you don't get a happy ending but making sure that people can know where in the save to go back to to not get that is probably important if you don't want to frustrate people into stopping cause they can't get a good ending. I like that you what to show a lot of different routs and stuff and I wouldn't mind like being a villain who sees something that needs to be done and is able to have morals (maybe you can romance the hero that is against you lol) or hero who loves a villain maybe. I think you could do it well and that it would be fun to play regardless of who you let people be or how you do it cause honestly I love the characters you write a lot and I would love to see you write in that setting.

B
BaronInc. · July 26, 2021

And I would be interested in hearing more about the horror games as well. They sound interesting (though as someone who likes characters with morals even if they are weird or fucked up I'm not sure I would be a able to be like out right cruel for something that feels unfair like how cruel we talking here? Like is the MC being like sorry got to let this character die because we need them to stay behind or is it like this person seems fucked up and untrustworthy so I'm not going to help them or? Playing as someone who you can't sympathize with would be hard. Regardless I'm sure I'm over thinking it like I do with everything cause it sounds really cool). Some of my favorite games are horror or have horror elements so whenever you make it I will definitely check it out.

I've played everything you guys have made except for the xoxo series and I have loved every one you guys have made. The one that does initially stand out to me is the horror one, tbh. I LOVED Lake of Voices and I'd be really excited to see how you guys tackle a heavier horror tone than that. I think a historical setting would be good too, sometimes a change of pace is just what people need. - As for the others, in order I like the Two Part version of Our Life, then the sibling then the full year. While I'm sure all of them would be good, I feel like the full continuous year one may be a bit tedious to play. But, I could very well be wrong! I really really think that anything you guys make will be enjoyable for us.

A historical setting would be totally cool for an Our Life game! Maybe a historical setting that's not commonly done? I've always loved the ambience of the Taisho era of Japan. tun · July 25, 2021

i loveee the second our life idea! i think it'd be great if you decide to explore the mc and LI's relationship in a span of a year, its has that cliche romance vibes but dangg i love it. and i think it'd be even more impactful to the player bcs we get to essentially go day by day-ish with our mc, we get to understand/relate to them and the LI more.

Yume · July 25, 2021

I agree, it was sad to not play the part where Cove parents divorced, and he withdrew to himself. Not being able to be there for him was super sad. So yeah, Diff 2 is my favorite too, so this kind of moment won't slip away again.

Oh my goodness these all sound amazing honestly! I absolutely love the idea of Our Life, But Different 2. However, and this is sealing as someone who’s not even into horror, I’d also find it interesting to see you going off the rail and making what sounds like a real passion project.

Bestie the idea for the Our Life sibling series sounds so fucking dope. I'm really looking forward to that one. As for the off the rails idea, what kind of horror game would it be? And would it still be a visual novel????

Damaris Vargas · July 25, 2021

I liked all the options they seem incredibly intriguing, but I really really liked the first option. I specially liked the idea of historical story. Like with dukes, duchess, barons, queens and kings like the play we see with Cove in our life. That would be so cool, to get to be a noble lady or something! Nonetheless I also have soft spot for villains like character. In the end I would happily play most anything you make, unless is too horrifical. I am a coward and get nightmares easily so that would be hard. But everything is awesome!💖💖💖💖💖

As for going off the rails, more power to you but I can't play anything that makes me stressed about choice and consequence too much. Couldn't even handle Telltale Walking Dead, even if I knew that choices didn't really matter in there.

Y
YonYonYon · July 25, 2021

Our Life but different 2 sounds fun. Feels like your choices would have more impact. As for other ideas, i did enjoy Foretold Affair and Lake of Voices, but they lacked in romance area, compared to OL1. I dunno, apparently I like it when characters get to know each other for a long time and we see how their relationship grows after they start dating. What I'm trying to say is, I think FA and LoV are more external plot focused than romance. It would be great to have a romance focused game with more plot than OL tho, haha

E
Elvenoob · July 25, 2021

I like 2 and 3 of these ideas the most but I'll give anything you make after OL at least a go :p. Also, keep these ideas on hand and settle on one after finishing OL2, or at least OL1, hahaha. Gives you more time to think.

Julia Converse · July 25, 2021

I am really loving the Our Life (But Different option1) and this would be my favorite idea! I feel like that it is different enough to not be stangnat but also similar to be a part of Our Life series with continuing to make the franchise better and better! Plus we still need seasons winter and spring!! Then lets go around again and again!! LOL I also like Our Life Sibling series (so I suppose it would be like our life because of game play being similar) because having the same aspects of Our Life with fantasy/Sci fi elements would be wicked! Even doing a different type period would be really neat or a make believe world..pet dragons for all! Lol Anyway, I can't say much about the horror stuff since I am an UBER wimp and don't play that genre. I wish luck on that too though. I am very happy to hear about the future and will continue to enjoy what is coming out. Cove is my new love, I am getting into XOXO Droplets (how is visual novel going?) and looking forward to OL2! Much Love! 🥰🥰

J
Julia Converse · July 26, 2021

I was also thinking after seeing alot of comments that alot of people like the OL D2 idea. I can't seem to wrap my head around it because although it sounds good because of the more detail within the year I think I would really miss having the different stages of the LI and MCs life. I feel like it would work well only for young adult stage (in college?) but would we get years in other stages of life? This would be fun! It could be one year in high school, one year young adult, one year adult. That would be interesting but completely selfish of me because it would probably be a lot of game content to make. I would pay for it though! All of it! 🥰😁🤣

I have enough trust in you all as creators that I would follow in any direction. I enjoy the slice of life you've created but the sibling series or leaning more into horror is actually what I generally prefer. Lake of voices was my entry game into discovering GB patch. As long as the customisation remains as well as romance, it doesn't have to be a main part of the story but romance is definitely my weakness. Nothing better than being terrified next to someone you're romantically interested in 🤣

M
Magicalkits · July 24, 2021

for me, i like the Our Life, But Different 2: it just gives me a feeling how you would interact with someone on a day to day basis and not just certain time periods. how would their first impression of you be and yours to theirs? do you click instantly and become close, only for a certain issue to come up that you personally can't stand about them? how would you react to finding that out and what if they reacted the same to you that way as well? i honestly love it cuz it's like you're actively trying to know someone and vice versa. there's just a lot to do with this and i personally would love it if this got picked

Yosituna · July 24, 2021

I like all the options, but my favorite is definitely OL Sibling Series (because I love me some morally ambiguous/evil options and also morally ambiguous/evil romances, and this would have that but with the OL-style framework!). If I had to choose a second, it would be OL But Different 1 (historical option).

M
Marquis · July 24, 2021

I absolutely love the idea of the Sibling series. I'm not sure if you're aware of the game, but The Letter is a horror VN that is exactly how you're describing (though you don't play as the villain), and it's one of the best VNs I've ever played and read. It's super in depth with an innumerable amount of endings. Every single choice you make impacts the entire game structure, even something as simple as giving your wife daffodils or throwing them away. It's phenomenal, and it took me about a week to just finish one playthrough. I know it's a huge project with an enormous scope, but I would throw all of my support behind a similar project made by GB Patch! I ended up buying like over 100 USD in merchandise, but it was all worth it. But you guys will have all of my support no matter what you do! I just like the idea of some gritty content because of the stark contrast to OL. <3

-
- · July 24, 2021

J
Jake · July 24, 2021

The rails option is the most interesting to me mostly cause it checks the right boxes for what i would fixate for a longer time on, but I’m wondering if it would have similarities to games like ‘Boyfriend to death’ or if it would be more toned down/leave some of the concepts of BTD out like rape and very in your face gore?

Y
Yume · July 24, 2021

My thoughts on Siblings: I've played games with comparable narrative possibilities (Witcher, Vampire Masquerade Otome version, Detroit becoming human, Mass Effect, and so on) and they all had the same problem: the finale became one-dimensional, and you couldn't change clan-groups once you'd chosen one. Most of the time, you will follow their path until the finish, and it was really frustrating that your choices throughout the game didn't matter in the end. The main reason is that it would be too hard, according to the developers, so they solely focused on providing alternative story endings dependent on the clan you choose. I believe only Baldur's Gate 2 acknowledged true player decisions, but I'm not sure because I haven't played it in a long time ago. I'm not opposed to the idea; I only want to point out that the task is exceedingly tough, and even professionals have had their teeth broken trying to achieve it.

l
lilakaz · July 24, 2021

Y
Yozha · July 24, 2021

I like the idea with MC and LI learning about each other for a year very interesting 👀 I esp love the potential of a more complicated relationship, because even though I adore original OL and Cove, I’d like to see some more disagreements between the characters as they often occur in relationships. The Sibling Series also caught my attention, though I’m not sure about evil characters… I would not want to police anyone’s tastes, but personally I’ve played a game where a character being evil ruined the whole experience for me XD But maybe because I didn’t expect it to turn out the way it did 🤔🤔 Either way, it’s too soon to judge. I like games about political intrigue, so I’ll keep an eye on it! 👀

A
Amanda · July 24, 2021

I really like the idea of the Ol but not version 1 kind of game! that sounds cute, especially a sort of historical/ historical inspired one. A fantasy/ mystery/ action adventure sibling series thing sounds interesting too. I'll admit I'm not into horror, but if that's the game you want to make, then you should enjoy making that!

R
Rudi · July 24, 2021

I like different 2 a lot can happen in a year especially as a young adult. I also like the idea of a meet cute that just keeps happening over the year lol. You run in to them at the bookstore, the Cafe, you share a uni class, you become friends and start meeting up to hang out at the bookstore or go hiking. It sounds sweet you build your relationship accidentally then on purpose. Also outfits sound fun! I'm also interested in a sibling series although I'm more into the mystery then the horror. Unless it's romcom horror (niche genre i know) I've been reading a lot of Chinese novels with horror games systems with romcom lol.

F
Frive312 · July 24, 2021

I think Ourlife but different 2, and sibling are both interesting ideas. I like the aspect have having one time period fleshing out the entire year, and I also like the aspect of having a mystery visual novel with maybe gameplay elements from something say like zero escape or danganronpa, that'd be interesting. I like the idea of going on full on horror as well, but I think it will be a challenge to do so. Horror is subjective and while I can't say GB's experience with the horror media since I haven't played any of the other projects like bloodrops and lake of voices, I think for this one it would be good to look at other visual novels / games on how they do and design horror. It's too common to have a game full of jumpscares and call it scary because loud sound and sudden pop in, I believe a good horror experience would be immersing the player in the setting, and making unsettling as well. I can recommend a few games to look to as examples to draw ideas from or just to study. Silent Hill franchise (specifically 1-4), the Corpse Party franchise which uses sound, music, atmosphere, a mix of small gore and writing to make it unsettling and messed up. I would also recommend the movie Jacob's Ladder along with the Silent Hill games for the psychological horror aspect as well themes that play into the gameplay and characters. One last recommendation, and this is kinda of a weird one I think, is reading upon the SCP Foundation pages, particularly either the really dangerous (such as SCP 173) and ones that lead to another world altogether or warp reality (SCP 087, 178, 1499, SCP 1733 (its about people inside a video tape who become increasingly aware they're in a time loop because of the constant video tape rewind)).

B
BRG · July 24, 2021

All of these idea are amazing. I have always thought the concept of Our Life would be so cool in different time periods or in different setting. That is why I like But Different 1 and Sibling Series. I would adore a fantasy, mystery, or even a historical take. I think that with the our life base you can do anything and tell any story with the MC and relationship customization and most of us would enjoy it.

m
madalyn ⚔️ · July 24, 2021

I have a lot of ideas and comments on this post it’s great and full of hope for the future thank you I love you and anyway I’m super excited! My first thought is I think doing something like xoxo blood droplets with a fully customizable MC with the chance to “romance” crazy/risky/dangerous types with different endings; including bad ones, would be really really fun. It’s really unique and honestly rife with possibilities. If you labeled the game clearly as you did with your xoxo droplets games about “yes these guys are awful and you will not have fun but hey we’re all a little crazy” would help keep people informed. I’d say a good base fo your audience is older and interested in more mature themes (with our life being a beautiful balance of pure wholesome goodness) but more 18+ content with more choices and consequences (or delights) would be an amazing addition. For our life type series I think of you want to explore something similar but different, going to a similar school and then potentially moving away, coming back, etc, all being branching choices would be a very cute and have a lot of different possibilities. Throw in a subplot of maybe the main characters having special abilities ( fantasy/sci fi/spiritual lead) maybe the MC goes to a school for magic and accidentally meets the LI who is a Templar or I don’t know. Y’all know what your doing I’m just pumped lol

K
Karina · July 24, 2021

I really like all these ideas•ᴗ•. I would like to see them implemented, each story will be exciting. What I'm most interested in seeing is the story of the Ol series with the idea described above. Living the whole story for that span of time would be cool. But about this part, with time intervals, I prefer the historical version, because the theme of the future repels me and I am unlikely to play it. Also Sibling Series is something I want to see even more. Being an evil character and influencing the lives of others, having bad endings and the same evil LI, sounds better than my life. I didn't really understand what the horror game was going to be about, but I'd like to know more about it. ༼ つ ◕◡◕ ༽つ

R
RawrAniRawr17 · July 24, 2021

All of these concepts are really interesting and I would honestly play any of them (I'd be a big wimp about the horror one but if you made it, I would have to try it!). If I had to pick a single concept on where to go next, I really love the idea of a fleshed out year long development of potential relationships where you can see what unfolds over time with multiple other characters and LIs. There is so much potential there to make it immersive and realistic. Especially with more serious and dramatic events happening. I love the fluff and wholesome so much of OL, which is why it's so comforting. But I am confident you can include wholesome fluff in a game that includes more conflict, hardship and drama. I also think taking a left turn and doing something completely different like historical or sci-fi fantasy could be really interesting and good.

Would love the Our Life But Different 2 option! I'm very into style and I think it would be nice to see how MC and LI can change their look throughout the year. And I think focusing it on a year would do good from a narrative standpoint too, like if you had a fight with LI are you already talking to them next week or are you guys still fighting. I'd love to see a horror game from y'all. If it has as much of the love and attention that you all have given the OL games, I would undoubtedly lose my mind at how the horror game you'd make would be amazing. I love that. Just know, if/when you all do that, I'll be on board!! (Of course, my and my horror loving self, that's an easy yes from me, boss. If you ever did a horror dating sim, with more emphasis on horror than blood droplets, I'd be in metaphorical heaven.) So the Sister-series for OL is a love for me. Anyways, I'd also love any way y'all mixed it up. Be it having a more complicated relationship between the p/c and LI, running or visiting a shop, or a whole new time period. I'm just a big fan of all of these ideas, so if you all took time to create things adjacent to OL, or something completely different, I'd be down to give it a shot. Even if its not something I'm not normally into, with how detailed your games are, I'm 100% going to give it all a shot and support you all through it. Your creative visions are very fun, and immersive, that no matter what is done, that I personally think it will be worth supporting!!

They all honestly sound like great ideas. The first two are closer to what you've already done. Being able to go more in depth in life stages & exploring different types of relationship dynamics between the MC & LI would be cool. I'm a sucker for fantasy type VNs and would love to explore the different morals as well as different types of LIs, so the third one sounds great to. The game series "Emily is away" is a bit like that. But interaction with a fake social media (Facebook page) during the last game was awkward for me (also, it was pretty limited on how you can use as Social Media). Then I tested "5 dates" based on Tinder, same it was awkward. Sms style on mobile is more neutral for me to get into it.

I'm a big horror/ mystery lover and looked for more vn games to other games and I found our life and it caught my attention because of how it was structured and the nice community. I can't decide which I like more! OL but different 2 is super appealing, especially seeing how charming the first two games are. I love the idea of controlling of the specifics of how the MC's relationship progresses, but, at the same time, I love a good horror/dark themed story as well, so the off the rails and sibling series options are also cool sounding!! So personally, I'd be happy with anything; whichever one you decide to make first, I'm sure it'll be absolutely amazing and a joy to play.

Kelly · July 24, 2021

I'm mostly interested in the 'Our Life but Different 2' scenario because it actually sounds the most familiar--it broadly reminds me of the Tokimemo series, just without the stat-raising. It also seems like the most natural step in the process from OL1 to OL2, where things are going more in-depth with each installment. But, it also would be the most involved and you might prefer to switch tracks entirely rather than to improve on the same formula.

V
Verse · July 24, 2021

I personally think the second idea would be an interesting project, both to play but also develop. It has a huge scope of possible variety to it without losing the same atmosphere that OL has, simply presenting it in a different manner.

So seeing a new fantasy or horror themed vn from you would absolutely be a dream come true, ngl. I know that you could absolutely come up with an amazing story for one, and I’m pretty much positive it’d become an absolute favorite of mine haha However, I’m also a big fan of the Our life format where it’s a lot of fluff ^^. They’re nice, feel good games and OL1 really helped me at certain points this year, so I couldn’t complain about option 1 or 2 at all. I’m always more inclined to play games with fantasy elements, personally, but I know I’ll definitely be playing any games you release in the future!

I love the ideas of the first two options, but, I had a thought. What if, because spring and winter are next to each other, the game had a sort of combination of both OL:different 1 & 2. Like: two age periods, set over the course of half a year each. So you still get the effect of seeing the characters ageing up, but also get to spend a longer time with them within those ages.

i think out of all of these, the “sibling series” idea sounds the most interesting to me. if you guys take it down the fantasy/adventure route with the possibility for close relationships, i have a feeling that it could be super Fire Emblem-esque (w/o the whole battle system obviously) which is absolutely a good thing in my books lol. but i also really enjoy the idea of the second option for an OL continuation game. while there’s totally charm in sticking to the established format, im all for switching things up to that degree. regardless of what you guys decide to do, though, i’ll be there to support it 100%. im even pretty excited for that future possibility of your “off the rails” project :]

As someone who loves the fantasy genre first and foremost I love the idea of the OL Sister Series the most, but I also really like the idea of the OL But Different 1. Like the potential of having that trope where in the first step you're teenagers and then MC moves away but the reunites with the characters when their adults in the second step is such a cool idea!! So I'd like either of those options, really.

Eleanore · July 24, 2021

Also yaaay more XOXO Blood Droplets. It's seriously one of the VNs I've had the most fun with just exploring all the bad endings and I need Jeremy's and Nate's second stories so bad.

Gingersnaps · July 24, 2021

In the different our life 2, with us reaching out or them reaching out. Would it be a different Ll that we would meet for the first time? Or would it be Cove, Derek, or Baxter? I love all the ideas! I definitely love the off the rails one. That sounds sick!

K
Kaie · July 24, 2021

My favorite two ideas are probably Our Life, But Different 2 and Our Life Sibling Series, but all of them sound really fun!

M
Meowmixx · July 24, 2021

I LOVE the concept of a darker, more mature game and I know you and the team would deliver it so well. Don't get me wrong - wholesome has been great and I'm so excited to have two games to explore and experience the fluffy side of life, but I'm DYING to play a game with moral ambiguity and has unfavorable, tragic outcomes. Especially in a MC.... it would be amazing to NOT be the kind, morally righteous person all the time. I want to be trash like all my favorite LIs are lol. Literally take all of my money if you bring a game like this to life! Whatever you decide, I'm happy to support all your future projects and can't wait to see what the future holds :)

Irial · July 24, 2021

I like the first three options, specially the second one, but the Off the Rails one is not for me, unfortunately XD

K
Kristine Agerbo · July 24, 2021

I like 'our life but deferent 1 and 2', and I would love to keep some of the fluffy/cuteness, happy stories where you don't have one ending that's just bad and nothing more... If at all possible😊 and I'm personally not too into horror games... I also love the way you are doing personalities in 'our life: Beginnings and always'

E
Eleanore · July 24, 2021

Definitely the sibling series concept, mostly because I'm not sure it can be done but I'd love to see you try and Our Life gives me hope it might be possible. Basically plot heavy games with multiple branches end up feeling like that, pre-set branches (which is still tons of fun!) Or they feel shallowly randomised (less fun). And it's understandable because doing both actual plot divergence and character customization is insane amount of work, but one day I'd love to see it.

Mackenzie Stewart · July 24, 2021

I love the sound of a full year game! I also like the idea of being able to play as a morally gray character in the more tense game,, but it all sounds amazing!

A
Amanda Behrens · July 24, 2021

I’m all for the off the rails option, love horror! Also like the our life different options. Playing one year sounds interesting and even just two time periods is fine too.

Y
Yume · July 24, 2021

I would choose "Different 2" because I really wanted to play the "In Between" part of "Our life 1" for the reasons you mentioned (I need to know more about Cove and Terri friendship lol How that introvert was able to share his food with hyper active Terri while us MC we had to grind his comfort zone lol). Yet, I also like to be able to go through different stage of life with the LI, so I am willing to pay DLCs for additional years haha I am not appealed by the last 2 options because I love fluffy atmosphere in your current game that put a smile on my face. I am neutral toward Diff 1.

V
VerlysGamingLife · July 25, 2021

you're question about Cove and Terri has an easy answer. Cove is demisexual that is super attracted to the MC. he never had any feelings for Terri and they were only friends. Cove only has intense feelings for the person he is attracted towards, if that is not there it's not even a thought towards being nervous around them other than every day nervousness. (I'm also demi as hell and know what it's like) :D I hope that helps

All of these sound amazing!! I adore horror, so Off Rails sounds fantastic, so that's my top pick if I had to vote. Can I be greedy tho and say I want them all? :'D

I really love all these ideas and am so for supporting your dream game too! I feel like you should also have the joys of developing a game you've been thinking about for years. Perhaps it won't be the near-future which is okay, but I am looking forward to it and hope you do develop it ♡ As for the OL Diff 1 and 2, it's so difficult to decide which one because I like elements of both. I really enjoyed OL Diff 1 a lot, but enjoyed the complexities in OL Diff 2. I don't know if it would be possible to make one game that had traits of both, so I'll choose OL Diff 1 haha. I'm really glad and proud to support you, I'm so excited for the growth and the future games you guys develop!

At first I was going into this post with the thought "Please keep the Slice-of-Life approach as there are so many Dating Games with drama or high stakes stories out there". But after reading the post I have to say: I really love all ideas and in an equal way that is! Especially your hardcore horror idea you've kept all your life with you and so I am just excited what I will see from you in the future. I am really looking forward to it! ^^

You've got me hooked, so I'd be excited to play anything you created. I guess it depends which option inspires you most to create when the time comes!

B
Beepboop · July 24, 2021

Yes, all of them please. I trust you as an author and your ability to make every idea, even the one i'm least interested in, into something truly special that changes my mind. But the one that stands out to me is the "sibling project" with fantasy, factions and morally ambiguity. That setting with the customization of OL sounds amazing

I think both versions would be super fun. I like the idea of spending a whole straight year. But I also had an idea about the 2 parter, like what if you only meet the love interest at like, summer camp? Like they don't live anywhere near you etc but you see them at summer camp every year. Or maybe you meet at summer camp one year and then out of the blue they're going to your school or something like that. I think that would be a cute way to interact or something similar. And you can decide if during the time between summer camp if you tried to keep in touch via letters or such. Idk I just thought it was cute 🥰

Oh and I love the horror game idea!

J
Julia · July 24, 2021

My feedback probably isn't super valuable since I'm very easy to please (and also the kind of person who could 100% eat the exact same thing every day without getting tired of it just bc it's my favourite— you could sell me different versions of OLB&A and I'd love it every time), but this honestly all sounds good to me, I feel like I'd be satisfied no matter which route you take. Of the OL alternatives I think OLBD2 sounds most appealing to me right now, since I like the thought of it being very in-depth like that. I also hope you do get to make your dream game one day haha, I'd totally check that out. It's kind of crazy just how wholesome OL is when your ideal project is completely the opposite.

tofire · July 24, 2021

I love the off the rails option, because i love to experience dark and cruel things in stories, it s fun! It s true that probably not all people that love our life have this same duality about the content they want to consume, but personally, as much as i love fluffy goodness, i also adore angst and dark stuff. Having a story like that come from you would be super interesting. That s y i m also interested in the our life sibling, because not everything is or can be good or completely good, and i can make my mc be a ruthless bitch or whatever. Having said that, i like all the options given in this post, i m just intrigued more by the darker stuff. Anything you guys will make in the future i ll be here for :)

I love the idea of OL but different 2! But also the Off the Rails idea sounds so interesting!! And I never say no to getting to romance the evil character hehe

V
VoltieBird · July 24, 2021

Honestly, I love all of these. If I was absolutely pressed to, the only one I could eliminate as one I don't absolutely want would be the first one. Your slice of life games are absolutely delightful, but from XOXO I can tell you also really like writing arseholes, so I think the sibling series or absolute off the walls horror game could also be fantastic. Horror is also my passion and one day I hope to make a horror game myself, so I can't blame you if you want to chase your dream!

Love the idea of OL Diff 2, living a full year sounds like a lot of fun! The sibling series also sounds pretty interesting, but if I had to choose between the two, I would go for Diff 2

S
Saki-hime · July 24, 2021

I'm totally up for all these options! But what stands out the most for me, is Our Life, But Different 2. I'm sure every new game will be amazing, and there are so many things in my head that I would like to tell you... but cant express in english... pls imagine only the best you could think of ♡♡

Honestly, 1-3 ideas are pretty cool. I'm definitely up for fantasy or sci-fi or combining of the two (why are elves always medieval????). I am not one for horror because I'm a coward, but that one also sounds interesting...I'll just observe from afar...in a well lit room.

M

I would absolutely adore a more tense romance novel, pleassssse. I live for that kind of content. Especially if there were some sort of rivalry involved... All in all, these are some interesting concepts. Definitely sticking around to see them possibly come into fruition.
