mrs_d “Split up, please! Go to one side of the court or the other. I’ll give things a tweak if the teams aren’t even.”
“Students bolted. Mrs. Dawes remembered her “please and thank yous” with the teens, but you shouldn’t be mistaken, her words weren’t requests, they were commands.”
“She could strike before a human could blink. Not by literally hitting anybody. But she’d yell at you and mark you down for bad behavior like that!”
“The jockiest kids were instinctively drawn to each other. They didn’t need a team huddle to know they wanted the strongest players on their end.”
“Anybody not in the sports crowd was naturally repelled into the opposite side of the room, except for a few artistic souls who stayed with the jocks to protect themselves from being against them.”
“Vianca and her whole crew could see the writing on the wall. If they wanted to be together after Mrs. Dawes’s adjustments, it’d be easier to squeeze in with the misfits than the gym bros, babes, and bosses.”
“The teacher herself went to pick up the one piece of equipment the game required. In the chasm between the divided student body, the three of you from Acorn Road were alone.”
“Tamarack swung her face from one side to the other. She pressed some fingers to her lips.”

tam “What are we gonna do?”

tam “We should be on the same team. The one with Vianca has room, I think.”

“Qiu shrugged with both shoulders, though was careful not to push their sweater into its proper position.”
qiu “I’m good with joining the underdogs. As we know, winning is just like losing, only harder.”
“That was harsh, but it was pretty undeniable who the favorite team to win was. More and more players had slipped in with the jocks, it had the strength and probably a majority of members.”
“At most maybe one of you could still sneak in.”

i remember this spectacular dodge i made, i basically pulled a neo from the matrix, even the jocks were impressed. i still lost cuz it was a one-off and i couldnt replicate it to save my life, but i was still cool for like a week after that dodge. core memory. stopped hating athletics because of it. we didn't have just one ball though, there were probably 20 on the court and both teams were huge cuz it was a third of the school in one class.
I remember playing dodgeball, but it was cat and mouse version you would play in the dark and you would have to sneak pass the cats without them hearing you you had to reach the other wall and if they heard you they would chuck an actual rubber ball at you. Yes, real rubber balls.
Oof, dodge ball brought back memories of when I'd get smacked in the face with the ball. (They were the soft versions, not the rubber ones and it still hurt because they would throw the ball as hard as possible) My poor MC is gonna be pelted for sure, she is not good at sports at all! She trips over her own feet most days too. :'D
Dodgeball was always fun back in middle school, but because i took tennis as my extracurricular, i was mostly allowed to do that instead of regular pe in high school
oh snap you better believe my sports loving jock MC is for sure gonna join the underdogs. He'd rather win if its a challenge anyway and someone has to protect the unjocky types.
And here I was hoping gym class trauma wasn't gonna be making an apperance😭💔
As a kid I hated dodgeball and could never understand why I was being forced to attack other people by throwing something at them. I always found the concept of targeting someone and then attacking them to "out" them from the group very disturbing. Hopefully my MCs will have a higher opinion. 🫠

Could there be a option for a Jock/athletic MC to join with the non-Jocks side? Whether to help the underdogs, they want to show how well they could do against a stronger team because the MC just wanted a challenge, or they felt protective of Qiu and/or Tamarack (if close)?
