In undergrad I did a term paper where I did a historiography of Cixi, going back to documents from the 1800s and then moving forward covering all the ways that people wrote about her over the last century and a half (mostly the western perspective since translated Chinese stuff was hard to come by). TLDR For a long time it was basically accepted fact that she was this uniquely ruthless and cruel tyrant who was almost entirely to blame for the collapse of the Qing Dynasty. Then starting in the 70s there was a feminist pushback and more access to Chinese sources and it was pointed out that she wasn't particularly worse in that regard than most Emperors had been and a lot of this was just Victorian misogyny, but also there was sort of an overcorrection that created some very #Girlboss interpretations of her that were just amazing to read. And now there is a more nuanced synthesis where yeah she definitely fucked up but China was backed into a corner by colonialism and already in a tailspin when she got there and she did attempt reforms, just way too late for them to help, etc, etc. In conclusion, Cixi is a land of contrasts. All this to say that a lot of the racist Dragon Lady Yellow Peril shit came from how westerners wrote about Cixi in the 1800s bleeding into pop culture and views of Asian women as a whole, because Cixi was the only Asian woman in the Western cultural memory (also some of it from perceived differences in the expected role of mothers between Western and Chinese traditional gender roles). So many characters are written to invoke Cixi (most notable recent example being the Earth Queen in Legend of Korra), and I found writers making comparisons to Cixi when talking about Chiang Kai-Shek's wife, Mao's wife, even Yoko Ono and the Beatles, etc. So yeah its kinda hard to not have the Dragon Lady trope come up talking about her cause she was mostly the template for creating that.

Her sex life is pretty well documented. It's not sexist nor slander to laugh at a royal's life, which we have done countless times in the past for Kings and Emperors.
