EARLY EPISODE: The Satsuma Rebellion Part 1: Dutch Kabuki
The heroic story of how Samurai Warlord Saigo Takamori rose up against the changing of the times. But actually, it wasn't really about that at all.

It's always so much political bullshit.
Kukris are great for gardening and crude woodwork.
It's clear to me now that the only way the world will come to finally understand the Dutch is through the brave work of podcasters.
That gonna have to be a series episode but awesome to listen. Also, hope they do an episode of a Christian rebellion in Japan too.
Fuck yeah!
I'd like to recommend Twilight Samurai. It's a solid drama that paints a more realistic time where samurai are mostly accountants, not really accustomed to violence and kind of think bushido is dumb. I'd also like to recommend the insanely goofy G.I.Samurai, aka Time Slip. Sonny Chiba and a bunch of JDF guys get shot back to the Sengoku Jidai period and using some real dumb logic decide that by getting the most involved in war and politics will force the space time continuim to launch them back to their correct time. They also have a tank, helicopter and a PT boat. Fair warning there is sexual assault in the movie.
I'll second the rec for Twilight Samurai. A fascinating little drama.
Getting greedy?
What do you mean?
BUDK is still around. I signed up for a catalog as a teenager, and I still get it! Jealous??
I'd not heard of it before, but looked it up online, as I thought it might be interesting. Amongst the iridescent katanas, I found: * Trump 2024 knives, Robert E. Lee tribute knives, and imitation Nazi daggers. * USMC branded desert camouflage Spartan swords (as modelled by Marine Todd) * Hidden cameras so, according to the site, you can 'check out that cutie across the room'
Gotta be honest I had no idea wtf was going on this whole episode. Japanese politics Meiji-1945 makes no sense
As a westener, en mass Asian names confuse me
If anyone's interested in reading a manga about this period that also includes saigo takamori getting an appendectomy, check out Jin
I volunteer to do burpees!!
There were minor rebellions all around southern Japan. A rebellion in the area I am currently residing got shut down when somebody's wife dumped all of the men's gunpowder in a river, so the would be rebels just gave up.
Gotta do the Imjin War at some point right? The Shogunate pulled similar diplomatic stunts by sending emissaries who just got hammered and insulted the Koreans so bad, they just killed him.
So many teeth to see the video ?
It's free Korealestate

The Christmas Stocking Filler Kerfuffle
When you cover the Meiji Era, will the series be titled Joerouni Kenshin
Gotta make JoeRouni merch now
I hear "Meiji restoration" and immediately think "Rurouni Kenshin" because I'm just a huge weeb.
Battosai means man slayer in Japanese so… “Kenshin Himura: Man-slayer The Man-Slayer”?
Actually made the kabuki 'yoooo' noise when I saw the notification for this one.
