I’m pretty sure Stansted is out in the boonies, especially with it being a Ryanair hub!

An Irishman trying to say Scottish smoked salmon is shit is the absolute funniest thing I have ever fucking heard.

I’m afraid to report that, despite this excellent episode, you’re all cancelled: “Robert Surcouf was a French privateer, businessman and SLAVE TRADER” (Wikipedia)

Man, smelly submarines… I was Air Force and I used to fly on AC-130s. When we would take a plane to swap another plane in the AOR. We basically lived and flew in the plane for 6-7 days in row typically 9-16hr flights everyday from home station to the AOR. Granted we stopped on bases and had hotels. Now, one time we were flying and our piss pots got too full. The plane banked too hard. The piss spilt all over the plane. So on top of the plane smelling like balls and sweaty feet, we now have the aroma of piss with for a few days. The smell was so bad that when we landed the US Customs officer came on to the plane said “what the fuck?”

I have answers to your questions about how bad Submarines smell. Long story short: they smell, strongly and pervasively, but not for the reasons you think (usually). Firstly: submarines are cleaner than any other ship I have served on or visited. Nubs who leave a mess get their faces rubbed in it like housebreaking a puppy. When hot racking, keeping clean is sacrosanct, and only the most brazen asshole would go to bed without a shower. But not everyone hotracks, and on SSBNs/SSGNs nobody has to hit rack. Secondly: because you live so close together, smelling like shit is a sin and is severely punished. Thirdly: while we wear boots inport, underway we wear sneakers. “To be quieter” What does make submarines smell has to do with their air purification system. The chemical used to strip CO2 also gets everywhere in the ventilation. And it stinks like stale diesel fumes. It gets in everything you own and wear. When I got home the wife would make me change in the garage and throw all my clothes in the washer before I could come in the house, then shower twice. Fortunately, after a few days underway you go smell blind and don’t notice it.

I totally agree with Tom, Stansted has fucked vibes.

Did it fight a 17th century Spanish weirdo who thought he was a knight cause if not that's a missed opportunity.

Am I understanding it correctly that there's an airport that's also a catholic shrine?

I work at an airport and yes, everyone is a baby.

I'm sure you all figured it out already, but it's not saltwater+diesel that makes submarines a floating gas chamber, it's saltwater+batteries. https://gizmodo.com/the-terrifying-chemistry-behind-early-submarine-fatalit-1695244906

I got obscenely giddy the moment I knew Joe was going to drop a G Gundam on Tom. Thought in reality the coolest Gundam is Neo Thailand's. They made it for a second series. I haven't watched it, but have only seen stills and read about. It is in fact the Muay Thai Gundam. Only thing is they didn't give it the badass Thai shorts nor do I believe a crowd of Thai's shout when that Gundam starts drilling knees to whomever in the clinch.

I confirm that I drew tanks, boats and MLRS in school. We used to have a lot of post-soviet military magazines in school, so drawing from them was just normal.

I was hitting peak Trapper Keeper age and peak uncontrolled autist military nerd age simultaneously in the early 90's, so I did have a whole folder of weird ass armored landships for desert warfare.

I will not hear any slander about Mobile Fighter G Gundam. That show is a masterpiece of hot-blooded and camp. And I will not be told otherwise.

I’m looking forward to hearing about how they fit mistress concealment cabinets in the officers’ quarters, plus the red wine and foie gras dispensers in the mess.

J

Another note in favor of “the 6th Heavy Bomber Group accidentally blew it up” instead of “it hit the tanker”: given the mechanical state Surcouf was in when it left Bermuda it almost certainly couldn’t have made it to the position of the Thompson Lykes by the reported collision time

Bray Wyatt was my favorite, too. Still sad about that.

While the submarine was built very badly the idea was in fact extremely metal

On the subject of G Gundam, I think Nether Gundam gives Tequila Gundam a run for its money. Ah, the perfidious Dutch.

M

P
Philip Dore · September 5, 2023

I'll look forward to listening to this later. If there's anywhere you don't want an over-perfectionist attitude, it's in submarine design.
