BONUS EPISODE: The Gombe Chimpanzee War
After making us depressed with 4 weeks of sad episodes, Tom gives us a light hearted tale of ultra violent chimp wars.
Spoiler alert: It is not light hearted.

I might've called for an Uplifting Human Fact or two
In point of fact, radiocarbon dating only goes back ~45-50k years. For fossils of the age the Leakys studied they need other radioactive isotopes. I imagine mostly argon and potassium
Re-listening to this today. RIP Jane Goodall
Completely on brand that the first thought Europeans had after discovering that chimpanzees were intelligent and similar to humans was trying figure out if they could enslave them.
Joe is cancelled for his problematic views on Gin and Tonic.
I have a weird personal connection with the Travis story. It happened in my home town in CT and within half a mile of where I was having preseason lacrosse practice. We saw all the emergency vehicles speed past and we believe we heard the gunshots. One of the guys on the JV squad lived down the street from where it happened.
During the 911 call Travis's owner is screaming at the dispatcher to tell the cops to shoot travis.
LIONS/BIOLOGY cross over, and I'm here for it.
I Googled it, Joe. I Googled it.
He was right to tell us not to Google it. I regret so much more now.
Started listening to Knowledge Fight #222 right after finishing this episode. Not even 8 minutes in Alex is using the face-ripping chimp story to talk shit about Prozac. Joe and Tom are officially witches
"Every shooter and every chimpanzee that kills people is on these drugs!" - AEJ
I was expecting some silly monkey silliness not this brutal family feud and child-murdering clusterfuck, subscribe to my Patreon so I can train and become the first peacekeeping unit dispatched to chimpanzee territory
Man I was with Joe and hoping for some Planet of the Apes-style combat. You’d think 1970s Africa would give Chimps easy access to AKs. That could be a shirt, chimp with an AK, cigarette, and Che Guevara beret.
as much as I logically understand that chimps possess Murderous Strength™️, A large idiot part of me still believes that I could get one in an armbar and defeat it
Oh god. You’d only make them angry and now their head is near your inner thigh and groin. This is a terrifying idea.
It's never good when Orange Park gets brought up in historical context.
Monke
There's a part of me that wishes Jane Goodall would have gave these chimp stereotypical Italian mobster nicknames. Ayy over here we got Pauly Shorts, we call him that cause he only last 5 secs instead of 6 in the sac.
Joe. You just watched that SNL sketch where Will Ferrell says, "I DRIVE A DODGE STRATUS" didn't you?
My stick answer is and always will be to visit mild violence on Napoleon and saying “Free the Russian serfs or I’m coming back.”
Fun fact: the meat of chimpanzees (called bushmeat) is often linked to ebola outbreaks.
This Sunday, come to "Barbarella vs the Chimps (1963)" starring Jane Fonda and Humphrey
Yerks is my grandmothers family name, so now I got to go check if I’m related to the ape torturing guy
Willy Wally and Sniff were damn fine chimps. Two of the good guys. Chimper Fi.
Literally too much monkey business
Goddammit.
ape. together. strong
