EARLY EPISODE: The Strange Tale of the RB2000
BUY JOE'S BOOK:
A decades-long saga involving a failed military weapons project, carnies, stuntmen, methheads, a possible international drug smuggler, a murder, and, of course, a jet pack.

God dammit Nate, the end of The Shield was exactly what I was thinking too.
The jetpack is such a gloriously impractical idea. It seems fitting it would go further in the capital of ultimate individualism, America. The ultimate non-shared personal vehicle. At least until we get FTL cocoons as per GalaxyQuest, right?
Starting to really enjoy this running effort between this and FTL to try and force one another to make episodes
I love this story, man. There'a a hired Navy Seal fighting a karate black belt for a jet pack, and its like a footnote. I wish the Kill James Bond crew knew about this thing before they reviewed Thunderball.
Nishant Mehta was the comedian hell yeah
A variation on the boot-polish-on-toast method of getting fucked up was told to me by my maternal grandfather (a heroic pisshead in his day). This was to place an open tin of that Brasso metal polish stuff on the stove and hold a slice of bread over it to catch the alcohol vapour released, then eating the bread. If you were far enough into the horrors to do this, I suspect the most common outcome was a stove covered with flaming metal polish and severe burns
RE: JFK being so impressed by the jetpack that he tries to have sex with it, I think for Kennedys "trying to have sex with something" is just their natural stress response, like how some animals eat their young.
James Bond uses a Bell jet pack in Thunderball. This may have been many people's introduction to the fact that jet packs are real (if their capabilities and practicality were way oversold).
All this discussion of Goons in encroaching on Kill James Bond's territory
Fuck, yo Couch
okay okay so drugs mentioned! In the days before GLP-1s, NOT EVERY diet pill was amphetamine-based, but just so many of them would just kill you. Shoutout to Dinitrophenol which will just cook you alive.
Technically flying cars do kinda exist AND can be operated without any kind of licensing. Ultralight planes! They’re even pretty cheap used. It’s just most people look at those rubber band powered death traps and go “No thank you”. And the ones that don’t tend to hit the ground going terminal velocity so it’s a self correcting for the most part.
It’s not alcohol but I would be down to try the Nazi meth chocolate bars. Like I have no desire to try meth, but something about the chocolate bar speaks to me
"don't look cool.... it looks like a small plane attached to your back" excuse me as a transformers fan that sound very cool
Regarding the Auschwitz stone smuggling guy: In Buchenwald you can visit the teeth pulling room. You could steal all the tongs and chisels, they are not behind glass. But they are still there after 75 years of being a museum because the pure evil the room emits, no one touches anything. You'd have to be an absolute psycho to so something like that. Also: "put the cyclon B stones right next to my balls" sounds like a real stupid idea.
Was not expecting a Sugar Land, Texas reference in this episode. I lived in Sugar Land for over a decade and I honestly enjoyed my time there. And contrary to Joe's "Sugar Land sucks" - it regularly makes "Best Places to Live" listicles, it's arguably Houston's nicest suburb (or tied with Woodlands/Katy, if nothing else). Weirdly enough it's per capita one of the most ethnically diverse places in the entire country.
Given Nate and Tom's music tastes, I'm genuinely surprised there wasn't a We Were Promised Jetpacks joke in here.
My grandpa was on Guadalcanal in WWII. He told me the Marines used to make “jungle juice” out of fruit water and I think canned fruit syrup. They would leave it in open 44 gallon drums and he said there was always an incredibly evil looking layer of foam and dead insects on top. Got you fucked up tho.
John couldn't Landis helicopter, but maybe he could Landis jetpack?
I bought Gravity's Rainbow on a whim in the 6th grade. It was on the summer reading list at the local university book store and I thought "I love reading, I'm sure I can handle it." I got about 20 pages in and thought "maybe I don't actually love reading."
Anyone recall the Jet: Unit, Mobile Propulsion (JUMP) from the 80s GI Joe comic and cartoon?
Ahhh... I'm just driving home from a SCA event, something cool to listen to while wearing a Cats Against Fascism t-shirt!
The Dollop has a great companion piece for this episode from 2017. Jet Pack Madness. Same story, completely different take.
I love every time I hear about the jet pack that drives you insane. There’s always new takes on it. Here’s the thing, even knowing that I would be pursued by karate goons, meth technicians, and associates of MJ… I want to fly the jet pack. It’s the modern equivalent of Mythos knowledge 20 seconds in, or towards, heaven.
I think the jet pack isn’t a stand in for drugs, it’s a stand in for the ring from the Lord of the Rings.
We have flying cars, they are called helicopters.
How did he get goons? As a listener of good chunk of NBEU, he used Hnch
An all-timer, undoubtedly.
The Ernest Zundell name drop fucking sucker punched me so hard
Please don't do a 9/11 episode. I watched the documentary 102 minutes that changed America. There is a portion in there where fire fighters are outside the rubble And you just hear beeps in the rumble. The beeps are fire fighters life support system. Letting people know where to find the body because they have passed. Haunting. Very, very haunting. With that said: Am I the only one who blares it's raining men on that day?
yay I love military procurement episodes
Can't wait to listen to this after work with my jar of tactical goo.
