Visiting Japan's museums, you can really see a gigantic Sid Meier's Civilization tech tree jump in the last 1500 years or so. Before Japan had a written language system, they were really lagging behind neighboring states in terms of artisan works, weapons, etc.
Moe gwai
Damn, those suicide jokes were real.
Japan deciding to keep the mound of stolen Korean noses as a shrine to this day was the least surprising and most awful part for me -_-
Dereliction of duty for frostbite ...The chiefs would tell us we'd get masted for "damaging government property". I always kinda thought that was maybe bullshit. "Kinda". I told NO MOTHERFUCKER when I got hurt, lol
big sword ting gave me a flash back from 2013 when a news station in san Francisco "announced" the names of the pilots of flight asiana 214
I like to imagine they were aiming the cannon at him and his bodyguard did the secret service thing and threw himself bodily in front of him as the cannon was fired
The worst roommate I ever had was this one guy in college who lived in a room adjacent to mine, but had the absolute worst smelling shit that mankind had ever produced. I'm talking Grandfather Nurgle levels of bad. I don't know what you have to eat to make your stuff stank that bad. I remember one day I was just hanging out in my room when all of a sudden I was hit with chemical weapons grade smell creeping it's way under my closer door. I had to stuff towels underneath it to stop the smell from coming in. I had to stick my head out the window that breath. It was genuinely one of the grossest experiences I've ever had.
Through this whole story, King Seonjo has just been a sad boy.
I guess only thing that was missing was someone mentioning Yukio Mishima. LLBD seems to love that guy.
“This guys been fired more times than I’ve been demoted” Anyone know the context on Joes demotions?
Re: the nose collection shrine, the Ancient Egyptians apparently did similar with the hands (or if they were in a really bad mood, the penises) of their enemies. Soldiers could turn in hands/willies and get a bonus from their commanding officer or even the Pharaoh; it’s recorded in tomb paintings. I don’t think they went so far as to preserve them or build shrines for them– at least, nothing like that has survived
Didn't expect a Forever War reference in Imjin War Korea. Great book though
Im assembling a team Big sword ting The Warhammer guy from combat of the 30 Knipperdolling from the Münster rebellion Bishop Henry le Despenser
I'll watch that anime.
I'm sad that Big Sword Ting doesn't have a wiki entry

I want to get ahold of a big ‘ting myself, but exactly what that ‘ting is varies from day to day. So the takeaway, which is the usual takeaway, is that these wars were completely unnecessary. I would say this is a LLBD ‘ting but it’s actually a general history ‘ting. Lots of battles and wars that were pointless. When people ask me what I learn from history my first answer is that we don’t learn. One of the definitions of insanity is repeating the same mistakes and expecting different results. That’s history in a nutshell. Sometimes you guys do an episode on an expensive, awkward, often dangerous to the user, and always useless piece of equipment - a gun or tank with the sole purpose of destroying the moon or moving an ocean. I love those episodes. One would think that at least the lesson learned would be we don’t give some lunatic endless piles of cash to fulfill his fever dream, or at least keep an eye on him. But we don’t. I think one example is the M1-A “fighting vehicle,” which turned out to be the M1-A ditching vehicle. I’ve been a member of the legion for years and I’ve learned that you will never run out of subject matter, for which I’m grateful.
If faced with tough meat, cut it into thin strips across the grain and smoke it for a bit.
Big Sword Liu was definitely dudes rock. Fought all over Ming China, from Myanmar to Korea and eventually died in Manchuria (then outside of China's rule) fighting Nurgarchi. He also had twenty wives and concubines and they were all able to ride horses and fight. This man was a menace.
Also Shimazu popped up in the Invasion of Ryukyu Kingdom story as well. Returning guest.
I think it came up in Martin van Creveld's Supplying War but a big part of Stalin's beef with Normandy was how few men were deployed. That is to say he wanted the Western Allies to manpower-maxx and locust-maxx and flood the place with soldiers while stripping the locals of food. Why not meatgrinder the soldiers and let the civilians die, just ship the ammo and bare minimum foodstuffs (sugar, cooking oil, flour)? Well, case in point here. What's the point in sending over two hundred Samurai if that's just 197 guys without guns who are Pissmaxxing and freezing to death? That space on the ship would be more useful carrying firewood and food. When your main enemy is the logistical constraints of the environment the last thing you need is more men, just send more materiel
At ft huachuca and my roomie around 10pm would get completely naked, set his phone down flat and face up on the bed. He would then stand (naked) next to the bed looking down at his phone while he angrily recited "scripture" to his fiance he was facetiming. He joined after God came to him while he was in a port o potty and told him he needed to save the Muslim women. I assume he's the new model of the ideal American soldier now.
That must have been a really bad shit for him to start hearing God.
So he got a Shrine. How does that make Tea Pervert Ieyasu a commie?
Me: joe why didn't you just shotgun marry the dude? Then the phrase "DADT" hits me like a cast iron anvil
I'm getting big sword on the ting
I haven’t listened to this episode yet and I am already dreading the atrocities that I know will follow
And then nothing bad ever happened between Japan and Korea ever again.
Yeah they became kiln & wheel buddies & like when you like each others ceramics you are best of friends. Even if there is only one case of this having happened, which is the Way-Too-Chill Etruscans
