Once upon a time the Russian Empire funded the construction of what might be the world's dumbest tank that is arguably not a tank at all. Larger than any of its peers during WWI, the Tsar Tank goes down in history due to its strange shape, weird wheels, and the fact that developers of the Battlefield video game series thought it was too unrealistic to put it in one of their games.

The groans after we learn the gaps in the armor were filled with hair has me rolling.

.... can I even say this? fine, I'll say it: · May 22, 2026

Just looked up the amx30 auf1 and holy shit is that a giant clown turret. I wouldn't say it's the dumbest tank I'd ever seen (ignoring, for a moment, the tsar tank), because that horrible creation of a sherman with the FL11 turret exists, but it's up there.

James Gilboy · May 21, 2026

Funny you should mention Robot Wars, because Battlebots has actually featured a bot based on this. It’s called “Huge” and it actually made it very close to being a series champion! It’s one of my favorite bots because of how unusual and effective it is.

The first time I saw a picture of the Tsar tank, it looked so grotesquely wrong that it genuinely made me feel uncomfortable. Like looking at intentionally unsettling images made for the SCP Foundation.

Pretty sure Aston Martin uses Mercedes Benz engines now. Rick Ross’s cup lean cup runs over.

AH I LOVE THIS SHIT THE ONLY GOOD TSAR

G

Sadly, eating a dinosaur would most likely kill you. Heavy metals were really high during the Jurassic. I'd just eat a great elk. Something I know I could eat.

OMG Bunnings snags and Omaru, Aotearoa mentioned! So when are you guys coming to Australia then?

I
Ivy Morgan · May 19, 2026

I love that nate is saying oamaru technically correct but it sounds inherently wrong in his accent

A
Alex · May 19, 2026

Yeah, I'm from across the ditch and have spent my fair share of time in Aotearoa but yeah, the accent made me cringe a little.

R
Richie Q · May 19, 2026

Just started listening but anytime I hear about an experimental tank or ship, I automatically think of the car "The Homer" from the simpsons.

Mmm big dumb tank.

00 buck would put a Jurassic Park raptor right down. Birdshot would take down a real one, probably, since they're turkey sized.

G
George Toner · May 18, 2026

Utahraptor feels like it falls in that nightmare zone of being 'ever so slightly' too big and fast (and smart) to quickly and reliably put down with anything conveniently sized and weighted

Is it fish leather or is it just fish jerky? Listen, I know someone is going to comment about how leather making and jerky making are two different things. I get it, I see you but..... Don't BRINE about it.

Nate, a fucking zybourne clock reference? In this economy?

The irrigation equipment Nate was trying to remember the name of is literally called a center pivot. Farmers are just as bad at naming things lol

not an animal but like its gotta be Silphium, it must have been AMAZING given like what nero paid for a stalk. I mean consider how good real asophoetida is and asofoetida was the poor cousin to that cyrenian stalk's ambrosial drops.

G
Gil the Gilded Dragon · May 18, 2026

The design of the tank was thus. He was being Russian orthodox when the cuopola was torn asunder & he saw the fucking THRONE. For if a horse is the prefiguration of tank then the tank is a lesser expression of god's throne (god thus is known to be a tanker) He saw the ophanim, wheels within wheels spouting tongues of fire & thunder, & the throne was bristling with hair as if a bull, & it sang Aleluya (or [uninteligible russian Russian cussing] it remains an open question), & it was awash in blood as the altar of the temple, & it fumed with costly mumiya, & once he no longer frothed at the mouth he was knowing the form of the Alltank was

G
Gil the Gilded Dragon · May 18, 2026

See & the engine came by celestial providence!

A
Alex Watters · May 18, 2026

It's the size and height of a house, it's covered in weirdly-positioned weapons, you have to climb into it, and most importantly it's constantly in danger of overheating, this is a just a Battlemech with wheels.

so i am currently fighting off a nasty cold and i've consumed too much ny/dayquil and mucinex and i'm still not wholly sure i'm not hallucinating these google results for the tsar tank what in the unholy goddamn fuck

A question for the ages

L
LeobaL · May 18, 2026

As it happens, nerdy food historians with a special interest in dodos can answer the question of what dodos tasted like. And there are more of us nerdy food historians with a special interest in dodos than you'd think! That dodos got eaten by humans because they were delicious is one of those great mythconceptions. There are accounts of shipwrecked sailors trying to eat dodos and they were incredibly vile to eat. Their meat was very, very oily, and to make it edible it would have to have been soaked in a brine/mineral solution for a long while. If you were relying on dodos to save you from starvation you'd have been better off going after the eggs. It was feral animals that made the dodos extinct, which was Nate's second guess. The worst culprits were likely rats from boats, and pigs, which in some cases were seeded onto islands to give potential shipwreck victims a food source. Never mind that feral pigs are very hard to take down... (And now I'm going to watch the episode of The Goodies where Graeme and Tim want to hunt the last dodo alive, so Bill teaches it to fly a WWI biplane.)

N
NowhereMan661 · May 18, 2026

I would definitely eat Mammoth. We hunted those guys to extinction because they tasted so good.

G
Gil the Gilded Dragon · May 18, 2026

& climate change. But as the great pyramids rose in the Giza plain, in Madsgascar & Vancouver island there were the last island shrunk remnants of the wooly mammoth. One can imagine then Khafre feasting on yon ancient mastodon

W
William Shackelford · May 18, 2026

ooooooh is it a big dumb tank kinda day? I think so!!!!

R
Rileygood · May 18, 2026

This is actually part of the French Wars of Religion series

L
LeobaL · May 18, 2026

This is what would happen if Mad Max was a past apocalypse, rather than a future apocalypse. I can't call it Steampunk, because Steampunk has class and style.

M
Mechgirl Allie · May 18, 2026

Halfway through the episode I was going to call this a gundam but no. It's the unwieldly, barely-humanoid doohickeys gundam villains use. This is the real life Big Zam.

Z
ZombieDwarf · May 18, 2026

I mean, the Big Zam actually worked and did its job, even if it lost. This was a massive waste of time and money that never accomplished anything of note and was constantly in danger of falling over - it's the real life Apsalus.

S
Someguy · May 18, 2026

In a adventure module of pathfinder rpg did a tzar tank appear (it was a campain with Dimension Travels thanks to the witch Baba Yaga) and even there it is breaking down and can't move.

N

C

I love fairy tales, especially ones that star wonky Russian death machines.

G
Gil the Gilded Dragon · May 18, 2026

Baba Yaga's mortar is, in fact, an artillery mortar. During the siege of Stalingrad the red army experimented with the tactical use of Witches as munitions.
