The frat boy, college drop out son of The Secretary of War gets posted to the USS Somers, which is acting as an experimental ship in the annuals of naval education that asks a simple question: What if we staffed an entire armed warship on active service with untrained teenagers and sailed them toward Africa.

Our captain decided to remove cigarettes from the ship's store right before a 4 week underway period. The black market after week one was wild. He never did that again. I bought a Playstation and Final Fantasy 7 ...it was the late 90s.
The school ship anime has happened at least 3 times. One focuses more on the fact that they have a tank based sports club then the fact they live on an aircraft carrier but it’s literally called a school ship.

My controversial sports take is that baseball would be so much better if they let the players fight like in hockey and I think that would actually make the game safer, because a pitcher with a 90mph fastball might think twice about intentionally beaning the batter if he thought he'd have to square up afterward instead of doing the weasely pull-apart pantomime that they do now. Ban those stupid tackles that players do sliding into base because there's 1000 different ways to end someone's career that way, but let them punch each other a little bit without season-altering penalties.
I'll answer the question about smoking on Navy ships as best I can (I got out in 2018, so things might have changed): smoking is allowed in a designated location topside on surface ships, except during refueling or ammo handling. Vapes are banned from all ships, and there's no smoking on subs. Officers tend not to smoke, expect the occasional cigar for special occasions.

Lol the BHR was my ship on deployment. We were allowed to smoke aboard, but had to be in open air on designated smoke pits on the superstructure and only at specific timeframes. I remember there being two designated smoking areas, but mine was off the hangar

The Navy is the last real remnant of insane 19th century aristocracy in the US military. Also, putting on the North Carolina history hat, Josephus Daniels does not rock for any reason whatsoever. He was a huge part of agitating the racist pogrom in Wilmington in 1898 due to his position at the News and Observer, the Raleigh newspaper that’s still around today. There has to be at least one better Josephus.

If you include the Merchant Marine there's has been a second mutiny with the SS Columbia Eagle during the Vietnam War.
