The Battle of Ramree Island has gone down in history for being known for one thing: a massive crocodile attack that apparently destroyed the Japanese as they attempted to retreat. But, what if we told you that that popular story was completely made up by one guy who wasn't even there at the time?

Literally crying laughing at Tom's story about the nature documentary
Listen, I don't doubt that the crocodile attack didn't actually happen, but it's still a great, horrifying story.
Ooooh is it Brooks!? Is Brooks the litigious nerd!?
Load-bearing Nate.
The dichotomy of Joe not enjoying Disco Elysium but non stop sweating on E33 is so funny
He contains multitudes.
Nate shut up
Would really love an episode on the battle of pilot knob Missouri
What’s the go fund me for making Tom livestream FF7, I will kick scrill to almost any cause
Here for the 'head hate
I knew a guy in the USMC whose last name was Moredic, which I can only assume is related to Mordecai, but goddamn did he get so much shit for it. We also had a Lieutenant whose name was Pickle; at least he was pretty good-natured about how many times folks would say that "we seem to be in quite the pickle." Come to think of it, our XO was named Wagner, although whether or not he loved the cock was unknown.
Why doesn't Tom like the book Say Nothing?
I am seriously curious about this as well.
Yes I want Tom to grind trying to breed chocoboos so he can get knights of the round
I have a friend from Burma and he has multiple terrifying wildlife stories, including getting corveed and one of the guys on the work crew getting eaten by a fucking tiger.
I struggled with Baldur's Gate 3 as well. Loved the story, but the combat mechanics got annoying/tiresome after a while. Maybe it gets better and I need to stick it out a little longer, but I didn't gel with it.
It helps to have a friend who knows what they're doing but I can confirm, it's like KC:D where it'll take you 25hrs to get the combat down but when you do it's one of the most satisfying feelings.
Anyone know what shitty British author Joe is talking about? I desire the drama
Came here for the same thing.
Funnily enough I listened to this while playing Disco Elysium.
Observations: Joe doing the whole Blind Seer/Rhapsode Like if Homer did the Soma-plant & kept calling Menelaus "a fail brother that's just whining because Paris didn't peg him" A fine specimen of the historian/soothsayer tradition indeed. Also: praise Sobek, lord of ejaculation, divine crocodile of cocodrilopolis, personal sire to each and every of those ancient beasts! (Alas Lowmax is getting cucked by The God Who Eats While He Fucks)
Ah. Not so much that the media isn't for you but one being not for the media. Like ditto on DE it's made for me but I can't fit myself to it
If you can't play Disco Elysium, I would recommend listening to someone playing it. I listened to WoolieVs playing it and even having played the game,.it was hilarious, and I could start and stop listening to it in a way I couldn't if I was playing the game.
There's an American Dad episode where Steve and a teenager with a British accent get lost in a jungle. He keeps saying absurd shit that his accent makes sound plausible that keeps hurting Steve. That's what I kept thinking of when Joe was talking about the dumb British historian
Nate: as someone who also has ADD, I think the thing your describing is this. Part of ADD is finding anything that doesn't interest you boring. Intolerably boring. But if you find something that interests you and requires a lot of thought and attention to detail, it's like crack. I can be completely and utterly bored by something normal people love, but lock the fuck in putting together a Warhammer mini or reading history or whatever niche interest I fall into on a given day.
As someone who's had their work stolen by a hack writer of dodgy e-books, a sudden change in tone is a very obvious sign of stolen work. In this case, it was first person in a book written in third person. In my case, I'm a food historian and I have online recipes and ingredient articles. The recipes are written in Oppression Units (if the stupid Imperial system of measurement is "freedom units" then the much more logical metric system must be "Oppression Units"). If you cobble together an e-book of recipes to make a quick buck off Wolf Hall, make sure all the recipes are written with the same units of measurement. And for that matter, standardise the spelling. It makes your plagiarism easy to detect ...
Its all good until youre counting the bandaids and the battalion medical section has a 3mil line item inventory because everything is 1(ea) and single use.. Its great being doc, until inventory...
Y’all should’ve gone supply it was amazing. 5 years of autistic zen making shit fit correctly. Minus the year you get augmentee’d to be a convoy driver. That part is kinda ass.
Draping 80s flak jackets over the door of your open window hoping it stops an IED
A lot of people who live in the region of Myanmar today don't like "Myanmar," because it derives from the language of the Bamar people, and they use this as an excuse to claim the entire country is theirs so they can wipe out other minorities like the Rohingya. "Burma" also derives from Bamar, but this was imposed by the British, so ironically isn't as problematic.
Can't wait to listen to The Hooligans of Radiohead
Deploying Brits to Burma is like sending Cadians to a Catachan-like Death World
Too much radio, not enough head.
Butchers crossing referenced and my day is better
I wanted to love Garden State so much and I just didn't.
Radiohead is the music equivalent of Seinfield. It sucks and their fan base is fucking annoying. Tom York isn't a groomer tuough... He just looks like one.
You left rays out of your list of dangerous animals in mangrove swamps, my brother got stung by one on the Ecuador coast and couldn't get to medical care until the tide came in so the boat could travel. He says his leg swelled the hell up and it took weeks for the sting wound to heal over. Radiohead's best song is Creep and they've been downhill ever since.
Speaking as someone in their mid 30s, the radio head (who are terrible) conversation was absolutely brilliant
preach
My wife's mom served in the Navy, she served alongside a gal named Swallows. Seaman Swallows was thankfully promoted at her CO's insistence at the next available opportunity.
Getting this the day I have to put my dog down has been a blessing. Fent Chud has come in clutch
Sorry to hear that. I've unfortunately had a bad couple of year stretch of having to put dogs down, so I can definitely feel your pain.
I agree with Nate on the Suicide being a difficult band to listen to. Definitely an acquired taste.
Shout-out to my granddad who was deployed to Burma by the British army in WW2 and contracted malaria there 🎉🎉🎉💯💯💯
The dense novel comparison is easily Joe's most baffling take by a wide margin. Like there are degrees to this, but I wholeheartedly believe that active listening is a skill analogous to literacy.
"It should just be easily understandable" genuinely hit me like he said Kubrik should have been making TikToks.
Man, what are the odds of me rolling through the main gate at my base after hearing all the lovely names in your previous units and the E-1 scanning my CAC name was Reddick. Of course the scanning thingy was slowly so I’m trying so hard not laugh of the imagery platoon in my head of Cum, Pussi, and Reddick.
I will buy that book when the physical version comes out.
For now only a digital version is planned.
The retreat during the Burma campaign is one of those historical moments where I am shocked by the descriptions of almost unimaginable suffering and then remember it was the IJA so sucks to suck.
Disco elysium mentioned! Incredible game but I understand
Zoo crew: if you somehow get Tom to play FF7 on camera I would happily pay to watch that as a special LLBD sub series lol
I fucking love Nate's Cajun French
LLBD: when context attacks
Nate: for good documentaries on YouTube apply your German and French skills and look up arte the documentaries are usually solid
This was the real Hunger Games.
I just realized that Joe's new book kinda sounds like Vinland Saga.
Oh god I can see "bogmaxxing" becoming a thing
The most unfortunately named people I ever met in the military were Private Raper and Seaman Guzzel.
