BONUS EPISODE: The Air Raid on Bari

The Luftwaffe conducts a large air raid on the Allied-held Italian port of Bari in an attempt to hold back the churning logistics machine that was crushing them.

What they didn't know was that the American liberty ship, the SS John Harvey, was carrying thousands of pounds of Mustard Gas bombs.

Mayo with chips is good. Tartar sauce is maybe even better (try before you deny - it's good, I promise). But when I was a student it was a trip to Ahmed's Bar-B-Q (kebab van) for chips, cheese, and houmous with salad and garlic mayo. I think that might be the best part of that bullshit university.

I just joined the Legion of the Old Crow. I’ve taken advantage of how often you post Joe and the fact that you don’t put adds in your podcast for too long. Love the content, love your connection to Behind The Bastards which is what actually led me here in the first place.

There is actually a 'good' reason why the shipping at Bari was as fucked as it was. At this time, planning for OVERLORD was well underway, and so was ANVIL, the planned naval invasion of southern France. Because of this, Allied shipping was on an incredibly fucked schedule, as a lot of ships were slated to be sent back to England, retrofitted, etc. They were desperate to get as much shit done in Italy as quickly as possible so they could peel ships away- to the point where Anzio largely happened only because Churchill personally intervened. The Allies also went into Italy somewhat under force for the same reason- troops and logistics were being slated for other operations, and it was thought they might just turn Italy into a defensive front.

Noblese Oblahaj · February 5, 2026

The other thing is that Allied command of Italy was, at best, chaotic. There were elements of it in Africa, Malta, Italy, etc, and the commanders were often traveling between these locations for various meetings. Sometimes the people working under generals weren't even actually sure where they were and would have to catch up to them between destinations.

Joe is also a huge Final Fantasy nerd, which I vibe with even though right now I’m cracked out more on Dragon Quest. I liked the first KH game since I had it on PS2 and played it a ton, even beating Sephiroth. But I’ll admit the wackiness of the story scared me off from the sequels. I never got invested in it.

I’ll find the book later, but it’s been estimated that more Americans died over time from exposure to asbestos and other like chemicals from building all the weapons etc in WW2 than all US combat deaths the same war.

Two comments. The Brixton McDonald's has nothing on the New York Ave NE in Washington, DC for dysfunction and chaos. My dad when he was in the Army during Dub Dub Dos volunteered for some weird study with mustard gas. He had nitrogen mustard applied to his skin of his left forearm. He had nasty scars from it. He never said anything about what was being studied, just he had mustard gas applied to his skin.
