EARLY EPISODE: The Battles of Khalkhin Gol and the Nomohan Incident
In this WWII Prequel, the Empire of Japan and the Soviet Union fight over the Mongolian border, a stretch of lifeless steppe with no cover, trees, or established supply lines. In what has been dubbed a "border conflict" tens of thousands of men, thousands of trucks, and hundreds of tanks are rushed to the frontline that only barely escapes spiraling into a much larger war...at least for a few years.

Thanks for the podcast
Is someone gonna tell Joe that baby scorpion can be the deadliest because they can’t control their venom output when they sting you?
The nimble, and noble Nate
Nate is the nickname the Americans gave it. Americans are too dumb to pronounce Japanese words. Source: Am American
I’m picturing Michael Jackson style Boxers rebelling now
Do you think the oil spray was the Soviet version of the Mechsploitation combat drugs and dopamine injection that makes you feel like you've just fucked whenever you kill 500+ enemy civilians with an off-target fire mission?
wait, hold up, War Thunder has taught me the I-15 was a fixed-gear biplane
I was in Harbin in January of 2015 for the ice festival and it was sick. Really cool city.
You should hook up with the History of Japan Podcast. They just finished a 6 part series on Manchukuo. I feel like you guys would get a long.
The Kawasaki -, 27 aircraft. They're talking about was not actually named innate by the Japanese. That was an ally code word from the British and the Americans The 0 was, technically the Zeke, there was also a Frank\n And for bombers, it was female names, so there was a Betty bomber. There was a vowel bomber. Basically, so that Americans and British and Australians could communicate about them instead of trying to use the Japanese names.
De-icing planes is hell in the winter, I hear
The Polar Bear Expedition… that was a good episode I need re-listen to it. All I remember is the poop tree that needs to be cut down.
The Jews are good at business so we should hire them was still a thing in China at least in the 2010s. A guy I know with no discernible skill in anything got a corporate job in China in some wealth management organization as their sales Jew. He just had to sit there and they would point out that they had a Jewish guy working for them to impress clients.
Holy shit Grigory Kulik is a LLBD episode by himself. Has a toothbrush mustache and effectively sabotaged the early Soviet war effort.
I read about those China/India border conflicts and the crazy conditions of what is and isn't allowed to be used in their fights in Neal Stephenson's "Termination Shock" and just assumed it was something he had made up for purposes of the novel. I suppose it's time to recalibrate my "That's too fucking stupid to be real" scale. Again
This is definitely the most lewd episode (not counting the novel special episodes)
“Hold that soup thought” “Really!?” :0
chicken oil for the teenage plane
Joe Nate Thom
What a way for Nate to discover plane furries…
Joe "Dump-Truck Ass" Kassabian brings all the Scorpions to the yard (his apartment)
The thing that's weird about the Mongolian People's Republic is that because Sternberg took it over and declared it independent from China (which controlled it when it was still the Empire of China), when the Soviets took it over they didn't want to fully annex it because it was still technically part of China, or at least China had a legitimate claim over it, and there was no precedent for it being part of a Russian state. But at the same time, they weren't going to give it to a non-communist Chinese government, or any of the many warlords running around at the time, so they just had to keep it as an independent socialist state. And then when the Chinese Communists did take control of China, the Sino-Soviet split happened, and of course Mongolia was on the Soviet side of that split, and so of course it wouldn't be going back to that China either. So the main reason that modern day Mongolia is an independent country is because some insane Baltic Russian guy decided to LARP as a Khan.
I NEED to get the Puyi episode.
I need to know which episode of trash future had the Gay Truck Acronyms, I need to listen to that ASAP.
Indian China or Pakistan border conflicts should be done with Well There's Your Problem. Its a engineering disaster podcast...with slides.
Wanna drop a house on that bitch is a killer track. Nate just doesn't miss. Nissan Honda Chevy is also a banger. We need a master list of Nate songs mentioned
I heard khalkh river and got really confused and excited because I thought a wild Mistislav was about to appear
Re: artillery duds. I read a tank combat memoir where a second hand story was relayed. An American Sherman platoon in Europe was bombarded by German artillery. One scored a direct hit on the turret roof. The shell came down through the hatch, failed to detonate, and stopped ''in the gunners lap" with him largely uninjured. The entire crew bailed but, being hit by artillery, there was nothing they could do but hide under the tank. They would later remount the tank, but nothing, not even the threat of military discipline could get the gunner to go back inside a tank.
American history is a series of Scooby Doo episodes where they take the mask off a klansman to reveal another klansman
One Day in the Life of Ivan Dipshitovich is an insightful fictionalization of Russian gulags
I didn't know that Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn also went by the name Ivan Dipshitovich.
The Talmud is to middle-aged Chinese businessmen what the Art of War is to middle-aged White businessmen
Aaaand Joe has just provided a reason I don't use contact lenses.
I'm playing Expedition 33 again while I listen to this. The first time was so good I had to experience it all over again.
Man, there are so many Yukikaze jokes I could make about this episode...
Fun factoid: gyoza are straight up plagiarized from the Chinese by Manchukuo colonizers. Normally I'd go "but regional variations" but no it tastes exactly the same as the frozen potstickers my mom gets from 99 Ranch
EVERYONE IN THE NATE
Oh boy, Puyi and his hearts of iron ass political career. Also another on my personal list of episodes to pitch Joe if we ever met has been ticked. Excellent job on this one!
The reason it’s called the Nate is a US designation. We rightly surmised that a borderline-illiterate Kansas farm boy on AA spotting duty would not be able to say “Nakajima Onigiri Yukio Mishima Mark 126 light fighter”
Beeves.
AUAB- assigned unc at birth
Ive only been to Riley as a contractor.....sucks.....bad, even as a contractor...so i cant imagine actually being assigned there
Also PLEASE do an episode of General Tsuji Masanobu, then a lieutenant colonel in the Kwantong Army and staff officer. Khalkin Gol was his brain child. This is also the third time he lurked in the background of an episode (Battle of Buna was his first and invasion of Singapore was his second). Tl:Dr; this man started a coup that he was supposed to stop that shaped IJA to the way it was in WW2, directly incited Marco Polo Bridge, caused staggering losses such as Khalkin Gol, Guadalcanal/Port Moresby, gave us a meme (Yamato Hotel), and supposedly worked both for CIA and Viet Minh.
Happy 400th episode!
Wish I was good at making fan art. Nate on a plane, could have some kind of Thomas the Tank Engine,
I was internally screaming JAY JAY THE JET PLANE when Tom made Thomas the Tank Engine comparison
Re the July 20th plot. I do love how wehraboos use it as an example for Romel hating the third reich like man have you ever hated an institution so much that when it asks you to commit suicide as punishment for something you weren't involved with at all you do it?
Speaking of always been an uncle, i knew a family where the oldest son had had his first child a year before his parents had their last child. That kid was born an uncle
Little did Imperial Japan know, they needed Imperfect Nate, to absorb Android 17 to achieve his semi-perfect form. The form needed to counter the Russian’s version of Piccolo. Will Imperfect Nate be able to achieve his new form? Or will he come up short at the hands of Ivan Piccolovich’s new power? Find out on the next episode of Dragon Ball D.
Russian Piccolo is an incredible vibe
I was stationed at Cannon AFB, New Mexico. That can be the Siberia equivalent. Lubbock, TX was the biggest and neatest city to me and it was an hour and half drive away still.
Nice bowling alley though, red door brewing had some decent brews but dear god...i got stuck there for a week with a delivery....it was a VERY long week.
She flies in my cockpit til i squirt
Speaking of the civil war: I want a book written about a time traveler that goes back to Harper's ferry in october of 1859 and just hands John Brown a arsenal of automatic weapons. Fuck the south then, now and forever. Also, I caught that best bout machine reference.
A particular challenging episode for plane nerds. The Ki-27 was named Nate as the US code named all Japanese aircraft, masculine names for fighters, feminine names for bombers. Nate, Oscar, Zeke were fighter types, Betty, Val and Kate were bombers.
Also I am pretty sure Joe is saying I-15 in the place of the I-16. I-15 was also a fixed gear biplane
Man I got excited that they would finally cover the Spanish Civil war
*Incredibly loud Tri Tankista blasting in the background*
In the battle between the Red Coats and Michael Jackson, who is the bigger nonce?
Tom shall be broken upon the wheel… of context.
20:00 all my fellow laundry files readers say «hello anglefon"…just me then.
Does anyone know which trash future episode nate is referring to because I wanna see what the other hosts reaction was.
I also need to know
Ad free, don't pretend we don't remember the phalanx method. (I kinda miss that ad)
Be the warrior of Oak and Bronze, brother!
