The wildest restaurant experience I've ever had is hard to quantify (I'm a sous chef), but I always go to the time I was working front of house and this family rented our whole back room for a graduation party. There were like thirty members of this family there, and the uncle of the young woman graduating chose to bring his SECRET ALMOST ADULT DAUGHTER and introduce her to the whole family. I'd never had so much help running food because everyone wanted to glimpse this drama as it played out over like. Three hours.

One of the most memorable episodes of Blood Meridian is a Comanche war band speedholing a bunch of filibusters while wearing the most insane outfits, and while I knew McCarthy did extensive research when he got a break from noncing the fact the Comanche really did loot and wear Anglo formalwear is wild.

I lived in Texas for about five years before moving back to my beloved San Francisco Peninsula. The panhandle was the only part of Texas that I didn’t visit. I liked living in Austin and I enjoyed working for the University of Texas while I was there. I have heard a number of colorful stories about the panhandle and I know a guy who’s from there. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t have rural Texan experiences. Due to family estate stuff I had to drive from Austin to San Francisco and back three times, which means I drove through east Texas six times. That’s six times too many. One natural stopping point was Los Cruses N.M. Or as I call it, “Prisonville.” *temporary pause until I stop dry heaving* There is one good thing about driving through west Texas. At night, in the middle of nowhere, you can stop and lay back on your hood and windshield. With no light pollution and no cars the night sky is incredible. That covers about 10 minutes of a 650 mile drive one way until you reach Prisonville. The denizens of west Texas know you don’t belong. Maybe it’s having all your teeth or wearing clothes that weren’t bought at Wal-Mart ten years ago. (That Wal-Mart is the only store in town.) It could be your smell or lack thereof. They know you don’t belong and they hate you instantly. “If looks could kill.” That phrase was probably coined in west Texas. I felt a little better knowing my Colt .45 was within easy reach, but maybe it’s like zombies; you kill one and the rest know it immediately and then you have hundreds of them coming after you. Ye Gods those people are hateful. But then, if you had their lives you would probably be hateful as well. I think I would. And I guess the skin on their knuckles toughens up after a while. Darwin followers are not going to find the missing link on the African continent. It’s in west Texas.

I've been learning about the Apache Wars recently, and let me tell you, that shit is nightmare fuel, and incredibly depressing. Imagine a group of people victimized by everyone around them for hundreds of years. Slave raids by the Spanish, slave raids by the Mexicans, slave raids by the Comanche, forced onto the worst land, living in a world of constant brutality. It creates a never ending cycle of violence that completely redefines a people, making them as brutal as their oppressors out of pure necessity to survive, and normalizing the most extreme forms of cruelty as rational actions.
