EARLY EPISODE: The Siege of Przemyśl
In the opening stages of WWI, an Army of 40 year old reservists from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, armed with decades-old weapons and no food, and largely unable to even speak to one another, attempt to hold off the Russian Imperial Army in what became known as "Austria-Hungary's Stalingrad"

The Austrian third of the AH Army was called the Landswehr.

Two things:
Schnitzel burger is just an Indiana tenderloin sandwich, my guy
Central Illinois also, pounded out till it's twice the size of the plate it's being served on.
Losing to the Russian empire in ww1 should always be described as a ‘crushing defeat’, but when they concede 115,000 casualties in the process, it’s probably more pyrrhic in nature
Horsus Christos is the chaplain in whatever army the Donkey Dictator commands
Oh I see what went wrong. Praying to tom cruise when he should have been seeking the taiping heavenly kingdom
What would Horsus do?
The problem with reacting to artillery is that we react instinctually, but nothing in nature has evolutionarily prepared us for something as horrible as artillery, so our lizard brain doesn't know how to respond. It's literally horror beyond comprehension.
I'm reminded of my family referring to our local Ponderosa as Pondegrossa because of how nasty it was
We called it Shizzler because that's what you were doing for the 48 hours after dining.
What about austro-Hungarian Rancid?? Got the song “Olympia, WA”
As a Polish-Galician Jew, I don't fault Joe for using an alternative pronounciation for Przemyśl. Our language can be hell on some people...Serbo-Croatian is just as bad lol.
Horsus Christus Lord's Prayer: Our horse, who art in stable, Christus is thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy maine be long. On Earth as it is in pasture. Give us this day our daily oats, and also give us our apple slices, as we give others their brushings. And lead us not into Glue Factory, Except maybe the comedy podcast, That shit rocks. Amen.
America is also like Poland in that they are both the land of the femboys…
Franz Kafka von Hötzendorf
anyone read from Franz Kafka’s novel “The Castle”? in a way it’s about the modus operandi of Austria-Hungary, but it applies to all aristocratic states to varying degrees. the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth actually being a very good example of a premodern one. basically, “no one wants to work anymore” is truest for the people born into a job, and that’s a really big problem when fucking everything in society hinges upon their management.
OH HELLS YEAH FRANZ KAFKA COTTAGE CORE!!!
oh the U.S. ain’t becoming Austria-Hungary, it was the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth and is becoming Alexander III’s Russian Empire… also, Joe and Nate, did you fuckin bastards eat Tom like you ate Nate… for shame.🙄
wait what, Nate?
sick-and-inbred-men of Europe just doesn’t have the same ring to it I guess
I wish more people focused on the eastern front of ww1, not least because the military events there had the most significant direct effect on ww2
HOLY SHIT HAVING A GOOD REASON TO THINK YOU MGIHT DIE (off and on) FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME IS BAD FOR YOU!!??!???? shit that makes some things make sense
On the collapse of Pol-Lith & of AustroHungary & Ottomans They were anachronistic not for being 18th C structures but for being MEDIEVAL constructions which while radically progressive at the start of the second millennium, it had had no real fixes since it got rebodged together post Napbon Like if France & England alternated between Most Repressive Monarchy & weakass monarchs that might get decouped hither & tither until they lost their monarchies Edit: oh shit the removing the necessity for bilinguality is... Well it is very Iron-hearted-star in that "have you reached some (unaforeknowable) threshold of national cohesion? If yes "collapse inwards & start fusing iron / become monolingual (no more francoswiss of swizogerman but the pan-swiss-pidgin) or rumble with elemental dissatisfaction & find the outwards pressure of the fission cycle causes you to break apart
I think the Seattle of Eastern Europe has to be Gdańsk.
an old dickhead college roommate of mine had a last name based on this city
We want the story of the Czechoslovak legion! C'mon, there is nothing cooler in the WW1 lore
Nate, there's actually a third Galicia in modern day Turkey, Galatia. They all have the same Celtic origin. (And yes, the Book of Galatians in the Bible refers to this Galatia).
shit I didn’t know that, ty!
I’m converting to Eastern Horseidoxy. I neigh-ver thought I be shod in the light of Secretariat. Neigh horse Jesus have mercy on my soul. Now I need to find some raw carrots and sliced apples.
We need an icon of St Bojack.
Eastern European Seattle was just Pittsburgh not only does it have a ginormous Eastern European population but it's also a maritime trading hub with massive swings in temperature
Hell yeah, I was just catching the rerun of the Conrad von Hotzendorf episode.
Lwów, when still under Polish rule had a significant Armenian population living there as well as, strangely enough, Scottish folks. I can only assume that would have been a very interesting time for everyone involved.
To be fair the only reason why Poland isn't using the cyrillic alphabet is because of which flavour of church they went with, but also you could possibly throw in the historical dislike of Ukrainians and Russians. It's a very interesting part of the world.
Galicia is pronounced with a 'ts'. Part of it is also in southeastern Poland. The two larger cities in Galicia were Kraków and Lwów/Lvov/Lviv (Lemberg under the Austrians). It was part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth before we got fucked over and partitioned. We got it back after WWI but then it became part of Ukraine SSR following 1939.
Галиция
Coincidentally with the jokes both about Polish spelling and orthography and about Esperanto, Esperanto was created by a Polish opthalmologist and has some problems as an international language stemming in part from being too heavily rooted in Polish orthography
Can we get a live show at a Mission BBQ?
How was Hungarian not an official language of Austria-Hungary?
“equal partnership”
I always imagine the first production meeting when they made the newer versions of "It". "Yeah, we all know which scene we are for SURE cutting. No Carl, that does not make us 'cowards'".
It would hippos christos
HM?&??!?!’ beau?
Stephen King is truly highs and lows no mids. Like, Carrie whips, and then there's the godawful Red Sox book.
For me his two best books are “The Shining” and “The Stand.” For some reason almost all of the movies that were adapted from his books suck. It’s not that hard to make a decent freaking movie.
I passed a ponderosa road while listening to the beginning, fittingly labeled "dead end"
rotating a direct fire dragula in your mind, call that a tepesnical
*replaces eastern Ukraine with western Ukraine whenever it's mentioned*
In today’s Austria when you go to Military Academy to become an Officer your class get’s named after a victorious or heroic officers from the past. They often have to look hard for names and the good names are already gone
LMFAO
Well if it’s called Austria-Hungary’s Stalingrad, surely that means the Austro-Hungarian forces survived a brutal months-long siege and won a heroic victory that turned the tide of the war…right??
Olympia made me think of the luchadora of that name that was on AEW this weekend who was buff as fuck 😍
Speaking as someone who family is polish american, yeah polish is a something language at times. It basically how can munch can you insert z, w, -ie, -wo, -ch. I do somewhat appericate where even if I don't understand polish, I can understand how it prouncance Also another thing with Poland and USA handshake is having the goverment be fill with ether center right party and far right party with no really left party because people will pull the communist card on you
fucking exactly
Beat the meat
que?
Worst ending? Mass Effect 3. Your choices? Eh, fuck it. Just choose which mediocre ending you want
The games are accidentally a period piece of 00s-10s neoliberalism. "Nothing can improve!"
I hope you guys do more episode on ww1
majorly agree
It's like they created a critical mass of people specialised in making things worse.
"Eastern Horsorthodoxy" sounds like the Mongolian Empire.
a Christian Khanate of the Golden Horde?!!
Yeah the Austrian-Hungarian Empire militarily, can’t not be stressed enough how ineffective they were. The trumpeted victories against Italian command staff early in the war due to Cadorna’s blunders, I feel some historians I read in earlier books use to take away just how bad logistically and organizationally the Austrian Hungarian Empire was in comparison to the other allies of the Central Powers.
I would buy Tactical Dragula merch, for the record.
Polish listeners are taking notes. We actually have a national scoreboard for Lions Led by Donkeys. Nothing goes unnoticed. Also, Galicja region covers part of Poland, which comes with its own quota of crimes against humanity after WW2. ąćęźćż
HELLS YEAH
DO NOT google search clip clop with safe search off.
"Welcome to Trenchfoot Barbeque, where the meat's just falling off the bone."
„Neigh the horse be with you…“
Thanks for the clarification on Gaelicia because I did immediately think of the place in Spain lol. Re: bilingualism... We have a lot of similar issues in Canada too. Despite only having 2 official languages, English and French, theres still a lot of issues. Federally you need to have both but provincially everywhere but New Brunswick only has one official language, so if youre a minority speaker of French in Manitoba or Ontario, or English in Quebec.... Well good luck if you aren't bilibgual. Even in New Brunswick it's an issue though. About 1/3 of the population speaks french but theres constant talk about removing required bilinigualism in government and signs because of expenses, with even whole political parties where that is a main platform. Generally the excuse is other than cost, most french first language speakers also speak English (but far less English first language speakers speak any French; mine's terrible.) In particular you need a certain level of proficiency in both languages to work any government position in NB, which due to the aforemention facts, means French speakers are more likely to be hired as more are bilingual. And so so many people claim its "unfair" (even though they have a skill that monolingual people dont have....). Its a whole clusterfuck honestly with a surprising amount of hosility... Its really tiring too because it doesnt have to be so bad and I dread them ever getting rid of required bilinigualism like they did in Switzerland.... And if you speak a first nations language good fucking luck lol.
Does Nunavut require knowing Iñupiaq?
Austro Hungary has the unique honor of somehow managing to make not only the WW1 armies of Italy AND Russia seem competent in comparison.
exactly lmfao, they really were the Germans’ würst enemy
The tactical Dragula is a technical, the swivel mount is either a demonic cannon firing lost souls like DOOM or a witch cursing people as it roars by. Also one movie that’s ruined by the ending is Sunshine, with Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans and Michelle Yeoh, among others.
i am literally addicted to the trenches
SAME
TBF invading Poland is easy. Just walk in backwards thru the back door and tell them you're leaving.
Schnitzel is traditionally made of veal not pork.
I hate that I’m gonna have to listen to this like 2 or 3 times cause I just finished up 44 hours straight teaching on an Army basic course and am absolutely about to pass out listening to this.
BOOOOOOOOO US ARMY BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I miss the "It didn't went well" :D
