*BONUS EPISODE* The Blue House Raid
For this week's bonus, we're discussing the late-'60s insurgency in South Korea, back at a time when the DMZ was more of a concept than an actual barrier, and the North Korean military trained an elite commando unit to sneak across the border in 1968 with a mission to kill South Korean president Park Chung-Hee. They got... closer than you might think.

We didn't survive the first 10 episodes for we are Ghost's.
Kidnapping civilians to teach them political theory is an all time Leftist moment, I love this so much. I can't help but be sympathetic for the assassins here, being this naively optimistic and trusting is bizarrely wholesome.
Tom was on fire with the songs and Mstislav gag this one
We do need more recognition of the "second Korean war" as some call it - that period between like 1965 - 70 where dudes stationed at the DMZ were getting ambushed North Korean units on a fairly regular basis. If anything, there were prolly more m14s fired in anger there than in Vietnam at that same time, cuz we sure as hell weren't giving those guys m16s. Idk if they even got flak jackets.
Been a lot of good jokes over the years, but in recent memory, I agree with the Mistaslav bit. Great stuff
So according to my mom, Joe is kinda right about the fan death conspiracy. She said it was basically something rich families (including hers) told poor people about fans when electricity first became more available. Basically the electric grid was unstable in the summer time if too many people used fans at night, so rich people and the government spread rumors that fans killed people so they could run their fans and watch TV at night. She still says "only peasants believe that"......
I'm enjoying this new thing where Joe gets bullied for being straight
Huge fan of the Ohio slander. Every time.
Two words: river fire
I don’t think there has been an episode I didn’t laugh at except maybe the genocide ones (maybe) But also it’s usually Tom’s laugh that makes me lol
Pak Jae-gyong being the only one to get back to DPRK by crawling across the DMZ with multiple gunshot wounds is, no matter which way you see it, metal as fuck
1. Top 3 cold opens ever, hands down. 2. I alway like to imagine Nick listens to the show while he’s on some horrible potatoe peeling duty, and uses that time as his own personal Mystery Science Theater 3000.
Aw, Nick! I've missed him. The Emu War episode is one of my comfort listens (Nick talking about swans being assholes always gets me).
I dropped my watering can laughing at “don’t go breaking my detant- both at the joke and then at the reaction, so yeah, trust your instinct
Like Joe said before, wanna be dressed like a clown, they’ll be expecting soldiers not clowns.
“Fighting” in Korean sounds roughly synonymous with the University of Southern California football cheer [and fight song] “Fight On!”, and there are lots of Korean Americans in Los Angeles, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a connection there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fight_On (Now I’m expecting Korean to also include the loanword “UCLA Sucks!”.)
Tabbernac is the greatest insult
It needs the hard k Crisser l'ostie maudit a la saint viarge de ciboire saint simonaque au bapteme dans sacrement câlice tabarnak
The Mstislav jokes were top tier. One of my all time favorite episodes
Now I'm stuck thinking of the fucked vibe of Chris Benoit (North Korean).
Now I want Korean MSI to cover "bring the pain."
My favorite soothsayer is dedicated to Aunt Suzie.
Motorized panda unit.
That Dr. Mike love handle surgery stuff is insane. Just a clear example of what’s wrong with the “health” and fitness industry today. Not to hate on him it’s his choice
That's why I live by Joe's workout creed: use your Chevrolegs.
I love Nick. I'm a Nick truther. Let him out of the basement. Been here since episode 2.
Nick: "... That's fucked up."
I don't really get most of the jokes--my sense of humor is vestigial and I have no grounding in pop culture--but every once in a while you guys crack me up. I'm mostly here for the history, the jokes I do get are a welcome bonus.
The story my dad told me was, despite him (or perhaps because of?) being assigned in the rear area in some officer's school as a clerk, he used to get beaten at night because people in his unit saw university students protesting against the dictatorship on the news and some decided to take out their frustration with the affairs on one of the two dudes who were in university at the time of their conscription. Things have changed a bit, but is nevertheless something of a depressing topic.
Admittedly, conditions for ROK servicemen did improve substantially since CPT Bethea's service in Korea, during the Moon Jaein presidency (the guy before the martial law dude). Of course, that had to be preceded by a long list of horrific abuses and other scandalous revelations. I did my service in one of those cake duties (or, as people referred to it during my service, "sucking honey") just before that, and even though I was in one of the best places possible, things still sucked.
You brought up Elvis and didn't make a Jailhouse ROK joke.
If anyone is interested in a greater overview of the Korean War, and why so many people fucking hated the South Korean government, I highly recommended the podcast Blowback. One of their seasons is just about the Korean War and the background of it.
I wouldn't use any podcast as a substitute for actual research, but it's also the only reason I've heard about things like Jeju Island.
The Alvin York and Mistislav bits still get stuck in the back of my head - I still go back to the Alvin York episode to hear about Dwemer automatons from time to time. Trust your comedic instincts, folks.
Oh same. I am always expecting it and then it doesn’t happen :/
Almost crashed my car at "I'm trying to catch a Nazi Diglett Sir!"

Also, I was a pretty big fan of Crayon Pop esp their last two albums before they unofficially disbanded. the song jumping is actually called Bar Bar Bar released in 2013, a year after Gangnam Style released. They came from a super small ans obscure company that they are one of those groups that had to do busking performances just to start building a fanbase which paid off when they released their second single. Even for kpop, they were definitely had a more "wacky Japan" vibe and that probably has to do with gangnam style and kpop trying to chase the same hype. I actually think Nate is correct about assuming it wouldnt be popular oversees. kpop from before 2014/2015 was...weirder. its like 2000s anime, you had some of the biggest classics that still get performed today such as SNSD's "Into the New World" or TWICE's "Like Ooh Ah". Also some of the weirdest like DalShabet's "Joker" which is just a Heath Ledger joker cosplay song (its also a banger).
On the fan death thing, isn’t also a cover for suicides? Because of the cultural taboo and it’s an easy out for those that don’t want to discuss the actual cause publicly. Which I suppose isn’t too far from being a cover up for murders.
That was the thing I heard as well. In America it's "Accident cleaning your gun" and in Korea it was "Fan got him".
Edit: I was a little mistaken, thanks folks This is a re-record of an older Lions ep right? I recall it being very good back then so I'm sure this one will be as well
You're thinking of the silmido mutiny
This is more a Lions Led By Robots question but I wanted to ask if you guys think South Korean Gundam would be the Moonie Gundam?
It has an AR15 and a bible
Isnt this a remake?
Silmido Mutiny originally covered it as prelude
