To be fair it's not like the 1 in 9 you're losing is a super well trained infantryman, if it's just some guy from a farm or from the city you got loads more.
I love all the Dayton talk.
Now I just want to give you a pigeon.
This has a George Clooney comedy written all over it
Love the people's commisar!
I live in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania (pronounced Bell-Font, it's French), and we have historical markers all over the place reminding passersby just how much of a meat grinder the local area was for air mail pilots. The weather is definitely screwy. Just in the last two weeks, we've had wind storms powerful enough to knock out large sections of the power grid several times. Said air mail runway is now the local high school. Besides that, Bellefonte is also the hometown of Jonathan Frakes (Commander Riker) and the headquarters of the American Philatelic Society (stamp nerds).
I'm from state colage and I had no idea about the air mail or the Philatelic Society
Is Dennis prager gone? No. Is he parilized from the shoulders down? Yes and I feel like that is some karmatic justice
I have done nyc government bids. We normally walk them over on the last day. One time, we emailed in our submission and lost by $.01.
I shouldnt have enjoyed that open so fucking much, also...as someone with a michigan state tattoo(I know gross) and who has taken a few classes there....yeah, fuck that entire institution
If it's a New York City pigeon, then I'll bet on them.
Aight time to go listen to the WTYP on the Air Mail Scandal for Part 2
My mother actually went to high school with the red Baron’s grandson haha nice kid i guess 😂
Other fun thing about the Air Mail Scandal is that it led to the creation of Boeing and United Aircraft Corporation (Later United Technologies Corporation, later Raytheon Technologies, currently RTX until they change the name again). They were the manufacturing interests of the United Aircraft and Transport Company. After the scandal, carriers could no longer also own their equipment manufacturers, so when it was spun off to United Airlines the aerospace manufacturers that would go on to absorb every other aerospace manufacturer was born.
Highly recommend everyone look up the dogfight scene from Wings (1937) because that shit was crazy
Speaking of pigeons. My friend group has a saying: "don't play chess with pigeons". Background: You are walking thru a park. You come across those chess tables. It's a nice day out and you have no current responsibilities. You decide "yeah, chess sounds nice". You sit down. You set the board. Now comes the waiting game. Who will take you up on your request to play chess.? As you wait - a pigeon flys down on the opposite side of you. You can engage to play chess with a pigeon so you make the first move. The pigeon looking at you as if it knows what to do next. It doesn't it's a fucking pigeon. It's going to knock over the pieces you took the time to set up. It's going to shit on the board you took time to set up. Shoo that fucker away so it doesn't ruin the board for when the right time/person comes. Don't play chess with pigeons.
When do we get Josh for midwestology ? The people yearn for it ! ( Great episode )
Where’s the Wayne State love?
I graduated my state's flagship school (Berkeley) and I still hate those pieces of shit
Napoleon wagon manifest tycoon is pretty much playing logi in foxhole
With my entire family being from western Michigan. Let's go. The weird Dutch enclave. Joe knows. My family avoided the Dutch. Which is always recommended. Also live in Colorado. A Midwest tradition.
the grand rapids to colorado springs trajectory is known and beloved of many. we shit talk both cities regularly on our show
I threw my hat!
Brazil claims they invented the airplane too. Every Brazilian will tell you Santos Dumont invented it.
Oh hell yea Michigan crossover combo
As a mailman this episode + the Polish mailman last stand do put a smile on my face
Imagine that farmer seeing a section of his field flattened into an impromptu runway, surrounded by piles of shit. “You guys are not going to believe what these aliens are up to!”
at least your hockey team’s twitter account didn’t get hacked by some guy who started posting about crypto scams and then had everyone confused because the organization’s management was so piss poor this season no one could figure out if the tweets were serious or not
Ohio does inspire people to get the furthest away from it as possible. Growing up near Dayton, you realize it peaked 100 years ago and has been on a long slide ever since.
No ones better than a pigeon
Just spitballing but I would guess the reason pilots didn’t just wear watches would be the vibration of the plane throwing them off. They didn’t exactly have g-shocks back then.
When do we get the 1 hour pigeon episode? That sounds rad
I've been a mailman for three years and I'm still waiting on my space marine armor zzz
It was so easy to rob the government holy shit
I want the Clog Heads to do a parody of The Marvinettes song Mr. Postman for this episode
I really enjoyed this one. The history of early aviation is so fascinating, especially because of the insanely cavalier attitude of its pilots. I'm not a pilot myself, but I did have some training a long time ago, and there was still this weird duality of balancing all the safety checks with the requisite carefree attitude we were all assumed to have.
Tbh being buzzed by a spray plane is still a major hazard of existing in the Great Plains lol
Update: just got buzzed by a Piper Cub out hunting coyotes by less than 10 feet. Made eye contact with the pilot
As a native daytonian I’d just like to mention that they also flew that one time in kitty hawk and then perfected it in a field that’s now a prairie managed by the National Park Service in this little bubble in the middle of wright patt afb
Oh hey dayton buddy
The Turks didn't even know they were shooting at a plane, they just thought it was a big Armenian t-posing through the sky
“The air smells like Drakkar Noir, fire that way!”
No shout out to iggy or mc5?!
RIP Brother Wayne
Just here to say the opening music slaps!
