Wes Anderson needs to make this into movie. I’m fan casting Paul Mescal as Captain Fuller, Jason Shwartzman as James Andrews, Tom Hanks as Don Carlos Buell, Ralph Fiennes as Ormsby Mitchell, and Timothee Chalamet as corporal Pittenger
He was clearly dedicated to this one specific train because he was willing to detail other Confederate trains during the chase
Been listening for a year or so. Joined the Patreon today to get this episode. Captain Fuller was my great-great-Grandfather. You guys did great!! Just make it a little more bad-ass, the hand car that Fuller took north of Big Shanty was not the “pump” hand car you might be familiar with. It was a “pole car” - you used a long pole to push it along. Fuller worked for the Western & Atlantic Railroad for years after the war, had two families (the first family all basically died of disease) and he died in 1905.
I live in Ringgold and literally saw an info station for the end of the chase out here over the weekend, what a crazy story.
The is not just “like a Buster Keaton movie”, this is THE Buster Keaton movie.
Came here to say this
Bit of a civil war nerd. I recommend the time Russia sent a fleet to the U.S. As a show of support (after the U.S. asked them to please not join the war actually). Or the CSS Shenandoah, the last confederate ship that was comprised of half Australians and surrendered to the British something like 8 months after Lee surrendered to Grant.
… The Carapass
Love the episode cover photo
Now you should do the great locomotive heist which took place in Korea
Are y'all gonna talk about the State of Scott, the anti-Confederate resistance microstate that lasted a hundred and twenty years longer than the Confederacy?
I think the Buster Keaton movie “The General” was loosely based on this.
The confederate is the protag? Bummer

Jesus I listened to it and couldn’t stop laughing
It’s never good when I recognize all the towns in one of these episodes…
Oh God, PGT Beauregard. The sigh and despair when Joe said "Napoleon In Grey" was amazing.
Buster Keaton's "The General" is based off of this where Keaton does play a Confederate conductor chasing a train of Union soldiers who kidnapped his girlfriend.
Those stunts were real too
My thought since the live show is genuinely that I was impressed that, despite there being a hand cranked train, no cranking it for the confederacy jokes were made
Definitely one of my favorite episodes I’ve listened to in a while. Batshit crazy story!
Absolutely love this story, it’s been a favorite of mine since I was a child. It is so batshit insane. Plus it scratches my ‘tism because trains! Both the General and the Texas still exist today in museums, pretty neat.
"The British Meiji Restoration" felt like a joke made for me.
As a black man. Confederate Terminator is the first Confederate I ever considered handing it to.
Train chase baby!
This brings joy.
Confederate Terminator is my new problematic fav
Im a Chattanoogan and its not as bad as Joe described here. Still love yall tho!
I don’t mind the disparaging comments maybe it’ll stop people from moving here and our rent going up
Outstanding
Judah Benjamin being into gambling tracks- he's a Jewish man in the confederacy.
James Andrews's family is still pissed off that the military considered him a civilian and wouldn't give him the medal of honor. I'm friends with his great great great grandnephew.
Tell him greetings from Fuller’s great-great-grandson. (And I don’t blame him for being pissed!)
Y'all should have flown Rocz for this.
I'm sitting here wondering if Gareth was in the audience.
Fuller chasing after the train like the scene of Lancelot running in the holy grail
In South Dakota we had a siting Lt Governor get a DUI on his horse. Which I think is bullshit but here we are lol
Wouldn’t it be an RUI? Was the horse drunk? 😂😂
How the C-1000 isn't the most famous man of the civil war is beyond me. Great show guys.
Oh thank God, there's a cold open for this one.
A nice long one.
Using my husband's account to say that we grew up in Marietta GA, and there is a museum dedicated to this in my hometown of Kennesaw, the next town over. It's called the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History. We visited it for school. I swear, if their recounting had been half this good I would have paid much more attention! This was a truly hilarious retelling of a story I've known my whole life. Also you'll be happy to know that Big Shanty, GA still exists as far as I know. We have some truly odd town names here, including Ball Ground, among others! -Laura
A confederate gets its wings everytime they yeehaw in one of their cousins/realtives, or when a yankee bullet sinks into their skull and they get connected to their God’s shitty WiFi.
If I saw a tombstone with two crossed white monster cans, I'd salute the grave of a fallen bisexual and thank them for their service
Like any seasoned military professional, Nate managed to dodge field duty
Driving to work now, thanks for the surprise drop, now my day is gonna be much better
Thank you guys for uploading this! I had to work and never got to stream the live show.
Garam marsala isn't a spice, Tom! It's a blend!! (Growls with autistic obsessed culinary rage)
