https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=brTMWgE-m6w video of a guy speaking old English to a Frisian guy trying to buy a brown cow. I think if you spoke a little German, and had a vague understanding of old English, you both could understand each other
I'm fairly certain Captain Cook of Hawaii fame is the guy who figured out the citrus/scurvy connection.
My dad is still working on a book about the Batavia. It has been a bit of a passion project...so I am quite curious about how this goes and I am very much looking forward to it. It's nice to hear the pod covering something that happened on this continent. Also...Joe, please consider a live show in Australia, preferably in Melbourne lol.
Oh naaaaarrrr
Holy shit this is JUST a fuckin Tzeentchite character from 40k
"The Captain was not in command of the ship" OH, hello there, TOTE Maritime!
Oh man, I’ve been listening to the story of the Batavia on Last Podcast the Left. I’m going to wait to listen to this one until that series is finished. Can’t wait to compare their notes!
HOLY SHIT TASMANIAN MENTIONED YES WE ARE REAL AND YES WE ARE INBRED!!!!
The Apothecary Council recognizes your devotion but will not grant you the rank of Master
I mean, there were race riots on aircraft carriers in the Vietnam War.
Yeah but that's "just" Conduct Unbecoming and a whole litany of assault, murder, and property damage charges. afaik, none of them were done as part of a coordinated effort to effectively coup the bridge.
Hooligan is a billion dollar company. If Lucy sold stickers she'd get a cease & desist posthaste
Isn't in Hoonigan?
Just listen to last pods episode can't wait to see the donk-take
Wow my family buys local good from a Mennonite store near my town lol. Never knew about the anabaptist connection
Can’t believe no one on the pod knows about hoonigan
There was a disgusting lack of Mstislavs in this episode. Unsubscribing .
Wasn't Mad Max literally originally an anti hooning PSA?
Yeh the director was a ER doctor before he got into movie. Why the early mad max films have realistic details about people walking away from car wrecked so f’ed up.
I've never heard "Frisian" said aloud before, so for a second I thought it was Frieza's native language.
I would really like a “Catch These Hands, Sea Lion” LLBD t-shirt.
Nate seemed a little disappointed in the lack of boat cannibalism on this ship from hell—can I interest you in tales of 19th century Royal Navy donkey Sir John Franklin? If I had a nickel for every time a crew under his command resorted to cannibalism, I’d have two nickels, but it’s weird it happened twice.
I love how the shows catch phrase is changing from “but wait it gets worse.” To “hold onto that thought”
Last Pod is covering too! Dutch people. Should have just built some fake extra land all the way to Indonesia. Silly.
Now learning the true origins of Dutch Muay Thai/kickboxing wasn't a bunch of Dutch Karateka cross training Muay Thai, but a bunch of Dutch castaways throwing hands at puffins and sea lions.
Joe I cannot believe you found a worse sea journey than the Voyage Of The Damned. Nothing but respect
When I was a kid, there was a rafter in one of the cabins at sleep away camp that someone years before had carved “vote yes on the clubbing of baby monk seals” into…. Crazy to think that a Dutch sailor made it all the way from Australia to New Hampshire.
Lions led by donkeys got me into the Boonta vista podcast, and I like that they're having guest hosts from each show.
It’s a testament to this show that when Joe said “ripping shitties” in the intro, I wasn’t fazed or confused. I, a non-American, non-native English speaker, knew perfectly well what it meant. I’ve used that expression myself to confound American friends. I am becoming culturally Michiganian. Help.
Do not eat while listening to this episode.
The toilet paper rope 🤮
Oh god I thought this was the HMS Bounty at first and realized I heard about Batavia from a True Crime podcast
The roaches were load bearing
There are Canadian Mennonites too, I’ve met some of them.
There is actually a good reason the Batavia was as far south as it was. The fastest way for a sailing ship to get from the cape to the Indonesian archipelago was to use the "roaring 40s" wind currents, so named because of their latitude. They'd sail south, then east, then back north, but because as Joe mentioned they couldn't accurately measure longitude when to start travelling north was an educated guess at best.
That's the same way the Manilla Galleon would sail to Mexico, but in reverse. The Spanish went North to hit the trade winds, then a right turn when they spotted kelp.
As someone who's lived in Washington for 23 years I can't really argue with the misery but there sure are some nice trees
Seconding the misery, especially the weather. The mountains are also really pretty, though
Couldn’t even wait for last podcast on the left to finish their series eh
In this battle of the podcasters I'm taking Joe over Marcus. While Marcus has the weird wiry drummer upper body strength he is hamper by the lasting effects of long covid. We all know about Joe's workout routine. He's got strength and stamina. His height also gives him better reach. As a bonus his cohosts do better racism against the Dutch than Henry and Eddie.
I imagine Dan Carlin is the Final boss in this scenario
*explaining dutchly* "you see shey call it corporal punishment because they're the ones who beat you with a can of shoe polish in a shock"
The timing of this series will hopefully end in a nerd fight between Joe and Marcus Parks
Here’s my “What is this, a crossover episode?” joke/comment.
Weird. Last Podcast on the Left also just started a series on the Batavia. Sometimes the world is a beautiful place.
Thanks. I I thought I was going crazy.
Do you believe that love can Hoon even on the battlefield
I'm a hoon-again Christian
A 2 part bonus series! Oh my!
Lucy!
Ohh takes me back… whipping shitties after 2 4 lokos. It’s a right of passage in northern Indiana.
*Salivates copiously as my 2 favorite podcasts cover the same topic but not at the fact that the event was a complete and chaotic shitshow
Somehow I hope this finally leads to the Joe and Marcus "Ooops all logistics" episode of LLBD that I've dreamed of. Very excited to hear your guy's look at the Batavia!
I’m going to defend the Javanese in Suriname. They are there because of the end of slavery and where brought in (together with a lot of Hindu Indians) to fill in the gaps the former slaves had left mainly in household jobs but also lots of administrative work. My ex girlfriend is a Javanese Surinamer and her family is very proud of their heritage. Also the prime minister of Suriname right now is a Hindu Indian man it’s a quite mixed society
I highly reccomend people read the Ibis trilogy by Ahmitav Ghosh, it centers around the people who end up in a mixed community on Mauritius made of people taken from their homes in the 19th century who ended up wrecked or escaping to the same island as European merchants upend and devastate asian/pacific societies in the name of free trade.
There is a company called Hoonigan. IIRC they had a hand in Ken Block’s gymkhana cars. Maybe the sticker was from them.
Yeah, was founded by Ken Block and still owned by his family estate
Been low key waiting a while for this one!
LLBD has a way of explainin’ things so I can understand… unlike LPOTL. But! I’m enjoying both series!
I thought I was going nuts. I wasn't paying attention to the title, I thought I was having a fever dream.
With the Dutch-English. A lot, not all but a lot, of English peculiarities can be traced to the fact they were conquered by the Dutch Oh on madnesses/manias. Theres a belief that the dancing plagues, which affected women mostly, were like an act of rebellion against their repressive lives. Because hey, start dancing & you get to dance & travel & be with guys & then blame it on the sickness. The Amish are also pacifists, the big difference is that the Amish are non proselytes the Mennonites are allowed to proselytize Oh on the Polynesian explorations. A thing with the reconstructions is that we can now unfuck ourselves if charts go wrong (see the South America Fuckboat) but the ancient Pacific Islanders... we have no way of estimating how many people died; the proven routes like the Kula Cycle are very fixed & also quite deadly.
Looks like you guys are gonna have to fight last podcast since you're both covering this topic at the same time.
we're as surprised as everyone else lol
NICE! Last Podcast on the Left Just started a series on these guys as well!
Ooh.... violence... sex slavery... massacres... wild war machines... this one has it all! And ensured the first European built structure on Australian territory was a gallows. Rather appropriate really.
