BONUS EPISODE: The St. Nazaire Raid
Joe and Nate explore the time the British launched a raid against Nazi-occupied France that included blind folded bombers, a suicide ship, driveby torpedo runs, and men in kilts that would kill or capture virtually everyone involved.

This newsreel from 1942 pronounces it ‘Louie’, for what that’s worth. Which means I’m gonna say the ‘s’ from now on as a sign of disrespect. https://youtu.be/bYwHkcUgZaE?is=Y5iWlC1jI7Rh2OS-
What's white and goes across the water at 90 miles per hour? Lord Mountbatten's tennis shoe.
Just listening to this one again and I guess no one has gotten around to correcting Nate's pronunciation of Louis Mountbatten's name, so I'll be the first pedant to note that since he was a fancy boy descended from minor commentary royalty, he was definitely a "Louie" rather than a "Lewis" 😉 (Of course, since he was a weird Englishman, he was known to his friends as "Dickie")
And a stick.
Jeremy Clarkson made a very entertaining doc on this raid.
On this, zoo crew review of SAS rouge hero's?
Seconding this! It's such a wild ride
I actually appreciate Nate stopping to clarify the "Old Mole" thing, because I was absolutely viewing it as a confusing Britishism
I'm from the town where the raid was launched, have some great stories from my great aunt (who was in her mid twenties at the time) written down somewhere about how the whole town knew something was about to happen but it was all obviously very secretive. We were also taught about it at school (briefly) and also have a rememberence service every year at the memorial we have for the allies who were killed. Absolutely mental story, and this episode has shed light on some the crazier aspects that the blokes with the medals never talk about - definitely more research to be done here for me!
If you ever wanted another recap tv show the series’s of Das Boot is amazing
this could make an insanely good movie. i don't have a joke here. the tow ship bluffing its way through the closing distance and holding steady under two bursts of fire, then accelerating to ramming speed as every german gun within a mile opens up simultaneously and all the gun boats cut tether to take off at full throttle ... i can hear the music in my head. you've got the doomed commandos nearly killed to a man but triumphant in key objectives, the false anticlimax of the failed detonation, and as the camera pulls back across the still morning carnage, ka-fucking-boom. roll credits. i'd see that twice. great episode, thanks.
Tom’s not even on this episode and y’all have invented Ulster Bushido
There are ponderables, imponderables, and ponderable imponderables
Your mistress breaks a spaghetti noodle in half and disembowels you with it, and then your wife cuts off your head.
I demand a norsk hydro heavy water raids series from ww2
Nonce Mothra
OMG, the first guy the IRA first sent to space. HAHAHA
Happy New Year, fellas. Hope this one is alright, despite the insanity unfolding all around us.
I'd like to think I'd have made it...hahaha nah.
If there was British Bushido, we could have gotten Baz Mishima
Starter and the British Meiji restoration ended that
I have a pavlovian response to "It is 4 am British time," so when Nate changed the joke, my foreskin was retracted for no reason.
In keeping with his faith, Nate removed the foreskin from the joke
Napoleon the VI , also a member of the French Resistance
Happy New Year!
The British are just doing the equivalent of Boyz in the hood with the sea based drive-bys.
