EARLY EPISODE: The Shimabara Rebellion: Part 1
Check out the merch store!
Once upon a time in Japan, shitty landlords, high taxes, and religious persecution united a diverse band of Christians, Samurai, Ronin, and farmers under the leadership of a teenager, believed to be an Apostle, in order to rise up against the Lords of Shimabara and the Shogun himself.

The whole thing with the castle sounds like a perfect metaphor for revolution and seizing the means of production. All these thousands of people are being brought to this place to work on a project for this one rich asshole, and the locals are all being taxed into oblivion to fund it, all the while they're being persecuted by this establishment. Eventually, everyone gets mad enough that they unite to overthrow that asshole, take the castle for themselves, and use it to protect themselves from the coming reactionary forces.
Hearing about all this Catholic history in Japan, and suddenly the perspective of the Japanese in the movie Silence makes a lot more sense.
Teenage Japanese Catholic Samurai is my favorite anime
Portuguese Speed Hole is going to be my next Ska project. Thank you
OK I was in fact eating Ramen when you dropped the Daimyo Soup, and am officially high enough to be concerned for a second. But then I remembered I'm eating Mi Go Rang which is certified Halal so I'm good there.
I did the "Obama was Japanese" conspiracy well over a decade now. I can't remember all my evidence, but it was something like: Obama was a Japanese surname, Obama oversaw a "pivot to the Asia", and he was the first US president to visit Hiroshima. For some reason, Republicans dismissed my arguments and insisted he was born in Kenya.
slight correction:the warlord who initiated catholic ban and invaded Korea was named Toyotomi Hideyoshi, not Tokugawa Hideyoshi. And he was technically not the Shogun (the commander) but the “Kanpaku (the informed)” because his peasant origin forbid him from claiming the title of Shogun, a title which the noble-born Tokugawa Ieyasu happily claimed after defeating the Toyotomi loyalist.
I should really play Ghost of Tsushima again. I'm just not really excited about having to get all the cosmetics if I start a new game. I did have fun collecting them, but there are SO MANY and I want my sword and armour to look the COOLEST.
As someone with weirdly intimate knowledge of the Shimabara peninsula: Obama onsen is actually really nice and actually the less famous of the several Obamas in Japan (Barack did not visit this one), Shimabara is actually now known for a local stew that includes mochi in it because of the starvation from this very time (apparently nobody in their right mind would put mochi in their stew unless they were starving), there's a village on the local volcano called Unzen where steam vents erupt from the ground which they call "Unzen hell" where at the end of all of this they executed all the Christians (and there's plenty of memorials to them there now), and the site of the old castle remains completely barren after the shōgun got well and truly pissed after all this was over. Oh and the volcano viewing spot also has several signs pointing to important sites linked to the rebellion saying something to the extent of "and that's where the morons fucked up on this day, that's where they got got on this day, and that's where the thing that led to the shōgun deciding, 'okay, no more foreigners at all' happened"
BTW Silence was a Scorsese
Ok where in Austria did Joe study? I really hope it was somewhere somewhat cool like Graz or Innsbruck…
Im guessing the reason the second episode is taking so long to come is because its taking forever to edit out the 3 hours of laughing from every ADHD ass joke that comes out each other’s mouths (im so keen for the rest of this series)
Live fast, eat grass 🤝 eat ass at Mass?
What a dark episode of Father Ted
Obama's famous long tonkatsu ramen
No feastables, no feces, just what am I supposed to eat?
When you said “Obama hot springs” I, for some reason heard “Obama Hapsburg” and felt a brief moment of dissociation from that psychic sneak attack
Damn, no more of the old & better pronounciation of "arcbussy"
Having just finished Shogun a few weeks ago and currently doing my 3rd Sekiro playthrough this episode dropped at a good time for me.
Business. Priest. Mr. Breist?
Joe will eat weird MREs from around the world for the pod but not a feastable, what a rousing anti-endorsement
President Obama Baraku and the consequences of imperialism.
How bad do you have to make a packaged lunch that the guy who had eat MREs for a couple years still won't touch it?
"Monsignor Beast" is a one-hit kill
I learned from my Brazilian fiancée that pastel (Brazilian empanadas) were invented by Japanese immigrants in São Paulo.
One thing to also note is that the Europeans almost certainly had scurvy and had been festering on a small ship with two dozen other homies since they departed from Europe. So early Japanese accounts of yellow eyed ogres rambling about some sort of t posing Buddha checks out
Tom, anything you want to talk about? We’re here to help.
Joe, dude, bro, my man, you should eat a feastable. I bet it’s awful
Sorry to be that guy : “Silence” was Scorsese not Spielberg. Either way love y’all, because as far as I’m concerned, you are the Scorsese of podcasters ❤️
Jfc Tom “milfs are just my peers” really hit me hard. I’m around the same age and I just cannot accept this
The lactose is what ferments into the alcohol with the Mongolian fermented horse milk so you can drink it as a lactose intolerant person.
Exactly! Most people aren't lactose-tolerant. It's a largely European mutation, as far as I know.
Apparently, mares milk as 40% more lactose than cow milk so yes, Joe would be in for a good time.
I want my human soup
I'm gonna fix myself what I'm calling a donkey, a mixed drink of Old Crow and White Monster, and listen to the pod.
Let us know how it goes lol
That Japanese invasion of Korea is a future episode in its own right. my summary knowledge of the war it sounds like “what if Vietnam War in Korea, but with samurai”
On one side the Japanese warlords were trying to outdo each other in Warcrimes Olympics. On the other side, the nobles of Korea were trying to do corpse-based engineering by shoving conscripts up against well armed and battle hardened Japanese troops.
How many subs to make joe eat a feastable
9k paid subs and I'll do it
Mongols: Pay taxes or we'll kill you! Armenians: If we pay you, you WON'T kill us?? Damn, good deal
Castle Behavioural Therapy is a cursed concept
Every time Tom says the Irish built the pyramids, I am struck by the thought of Irish hoteps and I take 1d6 psychic damage
The painting The Death of Socrates, but it's Joe about to drink fermented horse milk while Tom and the Zoo Crew lament
What if Ancient Aliens, but instead its Ancient Irish and they discuss how the Irish built the pyramids of Giza lol
The time old truth of your barber decides how the world percieves you. Keep trying to say barbers have magical powers, if they can get me a date and somehow make the Portuguese look like demons, well I have to concede that they are in fact magic.
Oh SHIT, I was gorging on washed rind brie cheese while listening. And... I'M LACTOSE INTOLERANT TOO. So, this is literal OH SHIT.
At what teir of the patreon does Joe and crew eat a Feastable (TM)?
