I work in the midwest at a japanese owned company. The number of rising sun flags and anime titties in the parking lot would shock you. Or maybe not

Bit behind, listened to this on the way to see Dad for Father’s Day, Joe I’m gonna HAVE to be “that guy” and I HATE “that guy” but….Nashville fell in February of 1862. I know you were probably just reading from a source that threw out “New Orleans was the first major city in the South to fall” but, well, yeah, no. They also burned all the supplies on the way out there as well, by the way. Nate, there was a Florida brigade at Chickamauga, (sic?) under a guy named Finley I think? (I’ve lived in TN for 30+ years) Great stuff, as always! Keep it up, y’all make long drives so much more tolerable

"Grand Impressario of the Canned Gin and Tonic Factory" sounds like a patron tier.

I completely forgot that the shitty Old Boy remake was Spike Lee. That movie feels like such a corporate decision: "Here's a popular movie from somewhere where they don't speak English, let's make a U.S. version of it for the mainstream U.S. audience who refuse to read subtitles or relate to foreign people."

It is weird knowing that prior to the Civil War, the US Navy had never had an admiral. It'd be like if the highest rank in the army was Colonel or Brigadier. The transformation the US Navy experienced because of the war and how competent they got so quickly is pretty impressive.

Butler was tyrannical BUT kinda nice to see the Union crack some heads, I prefer it to the hands off "Eh we'll let your officers go and foment racial warfare down the road". EDIT - Absolutely refuse to watch Spike Lee's Old Boy xD

Nate's favorite part of Enemy at the Gates was when the commissar in the sex scene said, "one woman gets milk, the other gets funnel. When the woman with the funnel dies-"

I love that a Union Commodore during an active conflict had a better understanding of de-escalation than a modern day police officer

My favorite part was when the confederates died.

Quick note on Odierno, he came out of that tour in Iraq in 2004 knowing he’d messed up. He changed his command and operation style by the end, and was championing to others to do the same. And then spent the next few years reading and learning. Which is why he got picked as Petraeus’ 2nd, then took over Iraq, then came out and became Army Chief. He went from a balls-deep hardcore operationalist to a political general with an Iraq specialty in 5 years. The US Army in Iraq study was his baby and only got screwed with because he died.

Matt Chrisman is a huge fan of Butler since he almost became Vice President instead of Andrew Johnson

It’s interesting that the navy was so pro-union as most of the people who pushed for its expansion were southern. They saw it as a way to push back against Great Britain’s anti-slave trade naval patrols and a feared invasion from the Caribbean.

The ACW could be a whole spin off podcast, damn near every campaign has at least one commander do some real hold my beer shit in it The Atlanta campaign from the CSA perspective would be great for the show.

Interesting to get a more nuanced portrayal of Butler than the episodes The Dollop and Matt Christman's Inebriated Past did of him. I would still recommend them even though they are a lot more "wow based anti confederate". Worth acknowledging two things about Butler though, first is that he was originally a committed defender of slavery that had a major road to Damascus moment in the lead up to the war, and second that even as his military career was falling apart he was apparently almost chosen as Lincoln's VP over Johnson. Afaik Butler himself declined it because he thought he would sink Lincoln's campaign with his reputation.

As a Chinese American, it's both unsurprising and disappointing that they'd protest about cops for exactly the wrong reason

It’s like how Mohamed Noor was immediately fired, put on trial and imprisoned as a Somali-American cop who killed a white woman.

Where is the statue for doritos locos...something that lasted longer, and had more redeming social value than the confederacy...and wheres the parade for david schwimmer...

Best wasted premise is the Doom movie. Someone very obviously wanted to make a proper Doom movie with demons and Hell and whatnot, but someone else, who I suspect of being a Jesus freak or terrified studio coward, stripped out all the good stuff in favor of tired genetic engineering shit.

Somewhat related, given how I recently learn that the longspur group was rename to mcCrown to thick-billed. It super annoying how conderates will tried to lead a legacy in very annoying presence way. Only to shame and gaslight people when people call out this pseudo legacy that represents the worst of USA(expect for the treat of native Americans)

Nice! A series on the entire US Civil War Mississippi River campaign would be amazing. 19th century riverine warfare culminating at Vicksburg.

J

McClellan is an episode on his own. Been awhile since I read up on my civil war phase but you can argue his bad leadership extended the Civil War by years. He had a chance to corner Lee on a peninsula and asked Lincoln for permission to move, got approved and just didn’t do anything, allowing Lee to escape. Later ran against Lincoln on an “end the war platform” and lost in no small part cause the war began rapidly ending in a confederate defeat

Grade-A donkey. I remember first learning about him in my US history class in high school and thinking “why doesn’t this motherfucker ever do anything”

Also, 'The Ballad of the 20th Maine' is a banger of a song with one of my favorite lines. "Steadfast as Katahdin, hard as winter rain. Go straight to hell with your rebel yell, we are boys of Maine." Union warsongs hit different.

S
Star maker 75 · May 20, 2024

Glad that unions soings are being more popular. Songs like "union dixie" "John Brown body" "marching through Georgia" and "battle cry of freedom". Again union war songs are quite something

Rural Maine boy here. Always been rabidly anticonfederate. Lincolns abolitionists vp was from my city. Nothing I love more than sticking it to southern weebs. Liked to joke during the confederate statue drama that we didn't have that problem. All our civil war monuments are to winners. Sadly we recently had a white supremacist from texas buy land in my hometown for a militia camp, but he was run out of town. Sadly has others in the area. I love my state and these cucks have no place in it.

Yeah the fact that some American "nationalist" will wave coderates flag and defend show ether the mess up dissonance or hypocrisy. Seriously conderates were not only of worst of Americans values , but also tratiors

Joe and Nate, I would suggest purchasing Tannus Bike Armour for your tires. I got some for my bike and it has helped so much to prevent flats and increase comfort.
