Cause I'm gonna be, out on an island. In the middle of the deep blue sea! Out on an island, where nobody's gonna come looking for me...
Are we in Landsknecht territory here? Time and place is right, and you mentioned Frundberg was a mercenary 😂 the Landsknechts were absolutely insane haha
All I can imagine with that convent of nuns is the Rip-off church from Black Lagoon.
I just finished the Mike Duncan podcast last night. This is a wonderful coincidence.
Great book choice Joe!
I have to say, I think Tom is getting a little monochromatic with his subject matter. How many times can the Italians-Wear-Skinny-Jeans joke be told?
Theoretically infinite
Nuns have always been hardasses. When I was in Catholic school a Nun screamed in my face for falling down a flight of stairs during a fire drill, because I made a sound as I fell and we were supposed to be quiet during a fire drill. That was Joe Torre's sister, funny enough. Rest In Piss, Sister Marguerite.
16:50 Biblically-Accurate Jesus of Suburbia.
I appreciate the deep irony of troops from a country named the Holy Roman Empire sacking the city of Rome.
Political Hennydick? I think I saw them open for Big Head Todd at the Fox in Boulder back in the day. Pretty sedate show, as I recall.
You mentioned Pope Julius II as the founder of the Swiss Guards at the beginning but we shouldn't leave aside the fact that he was much more interested in military campaigns than theology and was nicknamed Il Papa Terriblé, 'The Fearsome Pope' and apparently BATTLE POPE.
If you like Joe Abercrombie, you have to read Mark Lawrence. Personally, i'd start with Prince of Fools.
Wait is the Armenian church under the authority of the Coptic Pope?
No. The Armenian church has its own leader known as the All-Catholicos
"I may not be a practicing Catholic but it's the best you're gonna get". I feel like this is the most common thing said by Catholics in 2024. Even the clergy has gotten used to this one.
I've been going to an Episcopal church for a little over a year now. The "I'm a 'Recovering Catholic'" line is very. very. common. And in some ways kinda cool!
Dutch guy here. With regards to the bitterbal: it’s just ‘a bitterbal’ not ‘bitterballen’ - that’s the plural form. The average bitterbal is around 25-30 grams, but you can make your own up until about a 100 grams. After that, the ratio of crust to filling gets more difficult, to where you can’t really make a proper, structurally sound bitterbal. It only works in a small form factor. The joy of bitterballen is also that it’s easy to grab one with just your fingers. Don’t need utensils for them. So making a giant one kinda defeats the purpose.
Have you read Mark Lawrence? If you love Abercrombie, there is a high percentage chance you'll also love Lawrence.
Tom I just want to tell you that I got the David Goggins reference even if Joe blew past it
So the Netherlands is Germanys walugi. They have apps for government services and we print off forms from websites and send everything in the mail.
and then we furiously search for the last idiot who has a fax machine to send it to the government office
One of my ancestors was allegedly a Swiss guardsman. My branch moved to Long Island and became dairy farmers.
If you had to give one historical figure a Baja blast which one would you pick?
Hong Christ
Km km.
Joe Abercrombie answers the question: "What if RR Martin was good and respected problematic things he wrote?"
omg charli xcx mentioned
I buy my trebuchets from IKEA. They fire Swedish yeetballs
I just watched a Todd's Workshop video on medieval incendiary weapons and holy shit movies really don't do it justice.
Joe's comment on Fleshlights got me: "it's when you indescretely [sic; presumably means "discretely"] want a pocket pussy, but it doesn't look like you're fucking a pocket pussy if someone catches you, it just looks you're fucking a flashlight—which is normal."
The hot jesus thing was the poster for Semana Santa in Sevilla
That is the twunkiest Jesus I've ever seen.
Look man, if there is a picture of Goku airbrushed on the wall, you know those tacos are gonna fuckin slap
