Tomorrow is Mermay!!!
I hope you guys are excited. One year ago, the very first video that ever went viral on youtube was about mermaid games, and now I'm finally gonna get to make one! Before we get to that though, I want to let y'all know where things stand with Trash Idol. Today I ended up programming the entry menu. Look at everything moving and blinking~
Wowza, the menu looks so clean. I'm so used to working with pixel art, that all of these higher resolutions graphics makes me feel like a sophisticated game maker (even though behind the scenes everything is held together with duct tape)
So far the entry fields can be edited on the back-end, but they do not go anywhere. I will have to start making some sequences before we can really see the magic happen. But for the moment, I will be putting Trash Idol on pause, because tomorrow, Mer-May starts!!!
I've emailed the trash cleanup organizers, and one has responded that there's no rush, they run projects all the way into October (although I hope the game is ready way before that!) As you all know, in April I made 3 videos and that really ate into my gamemaking time, but in May I'll be focusing entirely on gamemaking (and keeping you all posted, of course) Will I be able to finish two games in one month? We'll see.
So what is the game for Mer-may all about? If you recall from my beginning of the year video, when I talked about potentially good mermaid ideas, the one that most people in the comments got excited about was the archaeology mermaid, who explores lost areas for secret treasures and whatnot. In this game, our protagonist Lani will be exploring a long abandoned palace, trying to discover what happened to its missing princess. This will be an exploratory puzzle game, and I have already mapped out how it should work - those details you will get tomorrow, but FIRST! There's a little poll going on over at my youtube channel that needs your vote! (guys, I may be addicted to running polls, they are so fun.)
Obviously when I drew the protagonist for the mermaid archaeology game a year ago, it was just a quick doodle without any big details. I want to create a character who is a little more distinct, so I'll have everyone vote for their favorite hair and tail styles!
that's all from me today; I'll have another post for you tomorrow, and then the weekend will probably not have too much going on, since I'm helping some friends out with a construction project and wont be at the computer. Anyway here's your sign-off joke!
Q: What's a sea monster's favorite appetizer?
A: Fish and Ships

They’re all such cute hairstyles!! But I think number 1 (Anemone Twists) is my favorite on her ❤️ Also, she has glasses as a mermaid?!! How cute!! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a mermaid with glasses.
Lots of cool hair options good job I hope to see more of your progress in the future.
Congrats on another year of mer-may! I’m seriously excited to see how everything goes
all hairstyles are so cute! I really like the anemone twists and shrimp tails <3 <3
I can’t believe it’s been a year since your mermaid video, I’ve definitely been *hooked* since then!
As usual all of the options are so cute and you've made it so hard to pick just one ✨🥺
