Flowing Faith
"Do you think this will be enough?" the tearful young lass spoke softly, holding a hairbrush with the utmost care.
Father placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Of course it will be Aeren, you did well. Just remember what I told you." His voice took a more cautionary tone. "Once we start, you must remember that we have to stay within the circle. It may be a frightful scene, but do not be afraid."
They stepped forward towards the altar and chalk-lined ritual circle, where a single robed figure stood within. The Disciple of the All-Mother held up a hand to halt their advance.
"Before we proceed, do you both understand what is expected of you?" The disciple called out in a stern, deep voice. "There can be no mistakes in this. We must be careful to only bring forth the spirit you wish, as others may try to avail this opportunity to take my body."
"Yes," Father called back, "we are both ready."
At this confirmation the disciple beckoned them forward. Father passed the purse containing every coin they had saved this year to him, and Aeren hesitantly provided the hairbrush, reluctant to part with it.
"Very well." The disciple nodded. "We shall start."
Incantations from an ancient, forgotten language boomed forth from the robed figure, and the entire altar became encased in a howling wind. Aeren, frightened beyond belief and tears streaming down her face, looked back towards the way they came, fighting the urge to run. But as quickly as it had started the commotion ceased, leaving a peaceful tranquility. She saw the robed figure floating from the ground, arms raised slightly from his sides, his eyes glowing with a curious energy.
From his mouth came a voice she knew all too well, and had longed to hear again. The voice of her mother called gently to her. "Aeren, is that you?"
Father, a tear in his eye and a hand placed at his daughter's back, urged her forward. "Go ahead, my little dove, say goodbye one last time."
