Watchers Chambers
The trek through the desert was long and arduous. It seemed at every turn a new challenge arose. Sandstorms, blistering heat, even the sand itself felt like fire under our feet, wrapped in leather and cloth to insulate our skin.
When our beasts of burden fell prey to the scorpions and spiders of the desert, we pressed on. When we lost our way along the endless dunes, we pressed on. When our water ran dry, still we pressed on.
Near the brink of collapse we arrived at the entrance to the temple, only barely visible against the sandstone.
"Here we make camp for the night." The foreman declared. "We will enter by morning."
Many of the expedition stirred in discontent at hearing such words while parched, nearly dying of thirst.
"We can't spend another night baking in this sand! We should go in! The endless springs are inside!" one yelled defiantly. Some murmured in agreement, cheering him on as he entered the ruins torch in-hand. A moment of silence, then a scream rang out, cut short by some unknown mechanism within.
Once more, the foreman declared "We make camp for the night." His face grew somber as he continued. "We'll retrieve our fallen comrade in the safety of daylight. We can survive one more night in the sand."
