Passhaven Outpost

The Mountainside Hermit

It's a simple life, this far above the valley below. Tending the chickens, maintaining the fences, and a daily descent to the nearby woods where logs are sawn down into quarters to fit into the wagon, as much as the mule can pull.

The ascent back to their abode can take the better half of the afternoon. Arriving in time to greet the mountain goats on their daily pilgrimage to scale the steep walls is incentive in itself for the hermit's busy schedule. As they skillfully climb the cliff walls that, to him, present as unscalable, it almost appears as an unnatural ability; a daily defying of gravity.

The tedious work is of the greatest importance, for come winter, the mountain passes will be impassible by all except for their goat companions. They have become so familiar to the hermit that with some coaxing (and perhaps a bit of oats), goatmilk can not just sustain them, but provide the main ingredient for their fermented milk alcohol to take the bite out of the chilled wind sweeping through the mountains. The daily trips for wood sustain them and their chickens with heat through the winter, and in turn the chickens provide eggs and, in desperate times, the meat needed to push through to spring.

The hermit's daily chores may seem mundane during the warm months, but once the seasons change, they become the reason for survival on the lonely, cold side of an unforgiving mountain.
