Hunter’s Icefields

The Expedition, bundled in their warmest furs and wrapped in cloaks to ease the biting cold of the northern winds, arrived at the iceberg mentioned by the forward scout. They eased their dinghy and a small investigative team into the water, reluctant to leave the comparative warmth of the galley braziers.

"Gently does it, everyone." the corporal called out softly. "Mind the ice, let's all make it back in one piece."

Luckily for the dinghy now navigating between the densely spaced icebergs, the wind and water were calmer than usual. As they reached their target, the massive beast, frozen in place, snow red with the bloodied remains, was clear to see. Upon disembarking, the accompanying ranger came close upon the corpse and began her investigation.

The corporal, attending her side, asked "Well, what do you make of it? Is this what we're after?"

She lowered her hood to look him in the eyes. "This is it. I'm sure of it. Look how the bones protrude outwards, look at the half eaten remains. The thing that did this came from within this beast, and then stayed to feast upon it after emerging." She replied in a cautioned tone. "They're multiplying, and we haven't much time."
