Do motorized knobs make MIDI controllers better? ROTO CONTROL Review
Hi there!
Who would have thought we'd still be seeing innovation in MIDI controllers? When I look at my plans for the coming weeks/months, I've got a few interesting ones on my radar, the first of which is ROTO Control from Melbourne Instruments.
I really liked how their drone-motor-based knobs worked within the synths they designed - NINA and DELIA, however, MIDI controllers are a different ball game because you don't enjoy the benefits of a closed loop system you develop end to end. You need to sync with a DAW or instrument/module, where things are neither simple nor straightforward.
How does it fare? All the details in my video!
All my best,
Ziv (testing whether motorized knobs are a revolution (that's a knob pun) on a youtube channel called "Loopop"...)

As for motorized faders, I really like the Softube Console 1. The integration with DAWs is excellent. I personally have their first version and the form factor is slightly bigger than the Roto Control. This said, I can easily see the Roto Control in my stage setup. Once configured, it could offer an incredible haptic advantage; sometimes the eyes simply don't have time to stare a controller display. Thanks for the insightful review!
Glad you found it useful!
Good work Ziv! (By the way, that should be 'How does it fare?' Sorry - I'm wincing at the fact that this may well bee homophonological pedantry 😜) But you have a great eye for detail, so it might be fair.
Doh! Thanks and amended :) and thanks for your ongoing support here!
I’ve got one. I think it’s great. Very intuitive / straightforward. Look forward to hearing what you make of it
