Post-post Edit:
Cool things I forgot to mention in the video because my brain stops working once the camera rolls:
The BEDT & NYD had an entire operation where freight cars were unloaded directly on the car float (without ever being moved onto land). There were a handful of industries that received boxcars which were unloaded on special barges with center platforms. Tanks and hoppers could be unloaded on certain barges equipped with unloading pipes. All of which could be done without the cars ever being spotted on land.
Bush Terminal had no less than 30 diamond crossings throughout the property!
Bush Terminal was rebuilt in the early 1980's which is why the NYCH yard arrangement scantly resembles how it looked in the NYD/BT era. All those diamonds would be removed during this time as well.
The track in the last few feet of the barge aprons wasn't bolted in place. Instead it had lateral movement to account for slight differences in the track spacing on the many barges that were used. When a barge was docked, the moveable track would then be locked in place along with the barge using massive barge pins.
To my surprises, reacher cars weren't commonly used. They were indeed used occasionally but for the most part they were not. The weight of the locomotive on the apron helped keep it level with the height of a docked barge.
At its peak in the mid 1970's the NYD moved ~13,000+ cars and the BEDT 17,000+ a year!
