[TUTORIAL] Volumetric Rendering: Signed Distance Fields
The way most modern 3D engines – such as Unity – handle geometries is using triangles. Every objects, no matter how complex, must be composed by those primitive triangles. Despite being the de-facto standard in computer graphics, there are objects which cannot be represented with triangles alone. Spheres and all other curved geometries are impossible to tessellate with flat entities. It is indeed true that we can approximate a sphere by covering its surface with lot of small triangles, but this comes at the cost of adding more primitives to draw.
Alternative ways to represent geometries exist. One of this uses signed distance functions, which are mathematical descriptions of the objects we want to represent. When you replace the geometry of a sphere with its very equation, you have suddenly removed any approximation error from your 3D engine. You can think of signed distance fields as the SVG equivalent of triangles. You can scale up and zoom SDF geometries without ever losing detail. A sphere will always be smooth, regardless how close you are to its edges.

(using firefox) but same problem in chrome
It seems the Patreon API is not working as expected. :( I'll revert it tomorrow morning when I'm back in the office. Sorry for the wait! I'll get in touch with Patreon as well. The Wordpress plugin they have developed is new, so might still have a few issues! :(
i only see : msg Min. Contribution required: $8 Support on Patreon button (but i am already a 10$ member ;) )
There should be an orange button appearing after that message. And if you click it, you should be able to log in. It's the first time I am using the Patreon API, so I hope there isn't any issue with it. :\
hello, unfortunately not, and i am logged in in patreon :(
hey, where can we download/preview part 4,5,6,7 ? thank you
Hey! Thank you! :-) Are you able to access the articles from the link in the website? I have just switched today to the new Patreon API for Worpress. You should be able to see the content if you're logged in with Patreon! Some of those posts are available for preview to $8+ patrons since they're not complete yet. Fingers crossed, the download will be available soon. This has been one of the most requested series, so there's a lot of pressure to make it perfect! :-)
