Fear.

Fear wasn’t new to Mark.

He’d been scared out of his mind a lot, actually.

Hard not to be when most of the things and people he fought were as strong as they were.

Like, for instance, the time his dad beat the living shit out of him.

That had been more scary than anything he’d ever been through; scarier than the Flaxans or Battle Beast or Sinclair’s robots. And not just because his dad was stronger than him.

His dad had always been stronger than him. That was pretty much a fact of nature if there ever was one, from the time when he was little and being able to lift a car with one hand was just something his dad could do.

It wasn’t the strength

It was just the simple fact that the man he’d spent his entire life wanting to be exactly like wanted nothing more than to hurt him, and Mark couldn’t do a single thing about it.

Being driven into the side of a mountain spine-first before a punch to the chest forced blood flying free from his mouth and made the whole range shudder. Rock had cratered around his back, the world crumbling apart as a face he’d known as Dad his whole life stared down at him with murder in his eyes.

He’d never felt smaller.

Then there was Thraxa.

Watching the dad he just got back fight two other Viltrumites was an entirely new kind of terrifying, mostly because Mark had never seen other Viltrumites. He hadn’t even had the chance to imagine what it might look like to see his dad against someone who could actually fight back.

Let alone two of them.
