Bonus: JUDGE MOVIES 01 – THE SHINING

My younger brother sees things in movies that nobody else I know has ever seen, and over the next couple months, I'm helping him launch his new JUDGE MOVIES podcast on the D/C feed.

I've already recorded a JM show that should be out in a few weeks, and I'll probably be on many more; we're also lining up some notable practitioners of Film Brain whom I think you'll enjoy.

Another thing that wasn't really touched on the classic "here's johnny" is that it was very well known in the Hollywood circle that johnny Carson was domestic abuser and had beaten his wife at a party in front of everyone. Johnny Carson son suffered alot of mental abuse problems probaby mainly from johnny Carson? I'm just guessing at that part.

Great episode I’m really enjoying this new series, but I’m gonna be an annoying podcast commentator; also sprach Zarathustra is by Richard Strauss, not Wagner.

Fantastic, fantastic stuff. I have so many thoughts but I'll restrict myself to one: I think the characterization of Kubrick as "detailed" rather than "perfectionist" is exactly right. It's not that every single thing in the movie is a secret clue--you can tell the important details because they work with the story.

Great show Michael’s brother. Really enjoyed it. Talented family. Has me speculating on your upbringing now, but none of my business and I liked the way you got the biographical stuff done and dusted quickly.

Would like to point out that “touchdown Mickey” though scheduled to air on the day the London bombings began, it actually never aired. For some reason, the BBC went with “Mickey’s Gala Premiere” instead. Which was then followed by audio and visual tuning signals. It was after those aired that the Bombings began.

Instant subscription. Also while I am absolutely psyched for the whole Kubrick series the trailer tells me there's a (not Kubrick) film on the roster that absolutely deserves this kind of analysis and nearly never gets it and holy shit I can't wait.

As a longtime listener, I of course completely bought into the idea of the United States as the center of the 4th Reich, but pointing out that the U.S.’s key innovation was discovering how to implement fascism within liberalism was revelatory to me: the concept now feels much more viscerally real to me than it did previously. The Nicholson impressions are also spot on LMAO

I really enjoyed the episode and I like the concept for the series. In the episode Paul quoted Jack's line "Wendy Darling, light of my life" from the staircase/bat scene. It's worth pointing out that this a reference to JM Barrie's 'Peter Pan' and also the opening line of the novel 'Lolita'. 'Lolita' is overtly about child abuse (and covertly about proto Epstein shit) and Barrie's works have been accused of being pederast fantasies (but they can't be because Michael Jackson and Stephen Spielberg loved them....) Associating Jack with those novels at this point in the film seems to be a subtextual way of having him confess to Wendy his true nature of being an incestous paedophile.

a quick word on SUMMER OF '42, with the disclaimer that I don't have a theory as to its significance within THE SHINING. its director is Robert Mulligan, best known for TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD; Mulligan is one of the largely underappreciated auteur directors from the era, which era's legacy is much more likely to invoke Coppola, Scorsese, Bogdanovich, etc etc. If Mulligan is remembered at all, beyond MOCKINGBIRD, it's that he's cast as "a pretty good director of modestly successful films with commercial appeal". Indeed SUMMER OF '42 was one of the top-grossing movies of 1971, and Warner Bros' 2nd biggest hit of the year behind BILLY JACK. I think Mulligan is better than his reputation (insofar as he's not almost totally forgotten), and in his best films, he tended to approach potentially hacky, soft-bellied subject matter with intelligence and .... well "unsentimental" gets thrown around a lot, but I would say, he's somehow both unsentimental and mystical about otherwise banal, soapy stuff. A great example is UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE, arguably the only good "inspirational teacher tries to connect with wayward inner city youths" movie, its success being tied to the fact that it isn't really inspirational, it's thorny, icy, often despairing, and concrete in ways that elude the subgenre in all other cases. And so, SUMMER OF '42: a quick summary, it's an incredibly melancholy coming-of-age tale about a hormonal teen (it's based on the recollections of screenwriter Herman Raucher) on Nantucket island, doing normal teen stuff, trying to cop a feel on a movie date, compare notes with his equally horny pals etc. He befriends a soldier's wife - the soldier has gone off to war - and, to cut this short, when she gets the telegram reporting him killed in action, she turns to our protag for comfort. Now I don't want to get into "well, the age of consent in Massachussetts" blah blah but if you see the film, it's a far cry from interpreting (as you mention being skeptical of the interpretation) that Wendy is molesting Danny. Maybe there's something about the story being about a woman who needs help around the house while her husband is absent, and turns to this boy - not just the sex, which happens near the film's ending, and if nothing else kind of haunts the protag in ways he has trouble describing. Anyway like I said, I don't know how to make SUMMER OF '42 fit the grand design of Kubrick's film. One thing is, it was probably easy to get the ok to use it, given Kubrick's long relationship with Warners. Ok time to tie this off, great ep, looking forward to more!

I’d really like to zero in on the refrigerator door opening, everything else “magic” can be viewed as voices in someone head or hallucinations. What Stanley is saying that if you are really helping the “big bad” and you are in a bind the “big bad” will slip into the physical realm and give you just enough help to tip the scales in your favor.

Thanks for your perspective, I have always hated Kubrick movies. I’ve always taken them at their surface level and never watched them a 2nd time. I’m going to have to go back to the beginning and watch them again. Your brother convinced me to go back and finish GR and I thank him for that. Looking forward to more of these dude!
