Butcher's Crossing it is.
Ubik.........never read anything by Philip K Dick. SCi Fi Horror by someone a bit more friendly than Harry Crews.
Has anyone seen the recent Butcher's Crossing film with Nic Cage? Was it any good? 👀
I gotta watch that
Just started If on a winter's night a traveler a couple of days ago. I've never read a book narrated in the second person before, definitely an interesting first for me. The use of passages (or whole chapters) made up of chapters of fictional books within the book feels very Borgesian to me. Calvino's The Baron in the Trees had me crying at times when I read it a few years ago. A very good book indeed. Just finished Down and Out in Paris and London which might be one of my new favourite books. Getting a glimpse of the hotel and restaurant industry of a hundred years ago was really interesting to me as a kitchen worker myself. Great anecdotes often come from horrible circumstances it seems. It's a must for fans of Anthony Bourdain. Happy holidays!
Amen to The Baron and the Trees and I appreciate your love for DaOiP&L. That book doesn't get enough love. I prefer his journalism in this, Catalonia and Wigan Pier to his political novels, great as they are. His early freedom from political messaging gave him more freedom to record what he saw. I don't think I'll ever forget how he describes the poor, dirt, smells, and circumstances as you say.
I missed the vote but Butchers Crossing is a sound choice.
Any of these would be great. I haven’t read Butcher’s Crossing so that might be my deciding factor
Have there been any reviews of Italo Calvino?
Yup, did Invisible Cities years ago https://youtu.be/OFylXgPDTas?si=whlazGGWHO0vIeDX
