Better Than Friday - 157
Good afternoon everyone, pouring rain here.
We've got the first hurricane of the season on its way: Danielle. Looks like we'll be fine.
Hope the weather is nicer wherever you are. Have a great weekend.
1. Book I want to Read - The Twilight World by Werner Herzog
A recommendation from Derrik, thanks man.
This is a book about a Japanese man named Hiroo Onoda who was put in charge of defending an island in the Philippines.
He did so, for 29 years, waiting for the Japanese Imperial Army, because he was never informed of the end of WW2.
2. Antonio Banderas as Pancho Villa
Solid performance by Banderas.
I found this during research for the next review, which is 'The Underdogs' (Los de Abajo) by Mariano Azuela.
Azuela was a doctor who traveled along and worked in general Juan Medína's army which was under the command of Pancho Villa during the Mexican Revolution.
'The Underdogs' is a fictional tale about a marauding gang of bandits who are initially 'fighting for the revolution' but end up descending into the lowest levels of hell.
Quality ebooks in the public domain. There are some excellent titles here, Dostoyevsky, Twain, Tolstoy...Sent to me by my friend Patrik.
4. Black Betty (Balam Balam) - Nick Cave Version
...yah Yah YAH
Love the Lead Belly version too, and the original of course, which was recorded by Alan Lomax in a Texas prison and sung by James "Iron Head" Baker.
The Ram Jam version is great as well.
Seems like a fairly accurate demonstration of modern investing.

I've been reading The Twilight World it's a powerful work.
Underdogs is really good. Kind of had Blood Meridian vibes to it, at least thematically. Kind of speaks to Zapata as a historical figure too. Similar to Che Guevara, his story’s been heavily marketed. Like there was this one restaurant somewhere that had a painting of Zapata shoulder to shoulder with Pablo Escobar! Made no sense lol
I highly recommend The Twilight World, I also recommend Herzog's earlier book (novella?) Of walking on ice. A good recent interview with Mr Herzog: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2022/aug/07/werner-herzog-twilight-world-fire-within-stunts-interview 'We live our lives in a fabricated theatre, all of us – we live through performances. Which is OK, it makes life bearable and it is very human. Our memories are shaped voluntarily or involuntarily according to our needs'.
I'm sorry you have the first hurricane of the season. And don't call me Danielle.
