Better Than Friday - 84

GOOD MORNING YA'LL!

Hope you're doing well, things are fine on this end.

I made a mistake in the Nina Power review and drew a patron who had already canceled their pledge, SO, for the Redrawing of the Coffee Jar, the Winner is...

Maria C. !

Thank you very much Maria, hope you enjoy the book & coffee.

And thank you everyone for your continued support, wishing you a relaxing weekend.

1. Currently Reading: To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf

This is my first Woolf, and I have to say, so far I think it's excellent.

The serene and maternal Mrs. Ramsay, the tragic yet absurd Mr. Ramsay, and their children and assorted guests are on holiday on the Isle of Skye. From the seemingly trivial postponement of a visit to a nearby lighthouse, Woolf constructs a remarkable, moving examination of the complex tensions and allegiances of family life and the conflict between men and women.

As time winds its way through their lives, the Ramsays face, alone and simultaneously, the greatest of human challenges and its greatest triumph—the human capacity for change.

2. That time when Cormac McCarthy and Werner Herzog were on NPR together

Wait that actually happened??

Thanks to friend/patron Carlos for sending this.

3. The Best Music I've Heard in Awhile

Mason Lindahl - A recommendation from a friend/patron - Thanks a bunch Claire.

4. Monty Python's Anarcho-Syndicalist Peasant Commune

This scene was funny when I was a kid.

Now it's hysterical.

5. Khmer Rouge Pop

A fantastic recommendation from a friend.

PLEASE DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH **

I have a confession: I'm extremely interested in Crypto Currency.

Mainly Bitcoin and Ethereum.

This sounds a bit like an ad probably, but it's not.

I'm not sponsored by them, except that the affiliate link was provided by them.

If you sign up with that link then I get 'moved up' in line for the credit card.

Since you can earn 8.6% interest (!!) on stablecoins (crypto tied to the value of the US dollar) alone on Blockfi, I'm really into this site.

There's no savings account (that I know of) where you can get that kind of interest rate.

It is risky in that it's not FIDC insured, but I'm experimenting a little.

This is the fellow who I enjoy listening to regarding Crypto-Currency News.

For any wine lovers out there, this was unusual and delicious.

I picked it up in Astoria Oregon.

Great label.

Oh, dear. Now I'm feeling like a cultural buffoon: years ago I'd read To the Lighthouse (so far the only V. Woolf I've read, though I have Orlando and Mrs. Dalloway, and maybe a few others, on the shelf), and didn't appreciate it: I was mystified that Woolf had her main character indulge in endless navel-gazing when the only event that seemed to happen was that Mrs. Ramsay darned a sock! Now Thomas *Wolfe*—that's a different Wolfe altogether! I loved Look Homeward, Angel and You Can't Go Home Again. (I want to read the whole cycle again!) And I loved Proust (I've read the whole set of novels only once, I'm afraid, but want to do it again)—buried in the paragraphs of reflection that sometimes go on for pages are some profound realizations about human nature and magnificent passages about music (and yes, occasionally some fatuous fluff, and characters who reappear after Proust had already killed them off!). So many books, so little time! Alexander is said to have lamented that there were no more worlds to conquer (an old canard, documented nowhere and repeated everywhere), but I lament that there are too many books that I'll never get to—and I want to read them all!

That NPR interview with McCarthy and Herzog was a great listen! Thanks for sharing that. Also can't wait for the To the Lighthouse review. I've read two Wolfe novels (To the Lighthouse and Mrs. Dalloway) and both times came away with the impression that Wolfe knew everything there is to know about the human experience and the human mind. The only other writers who've given me a similar impression are Proust (currently almost finished with Guermantes Way/about to start Sodom and Gomorrah), Tolstoy, and to an extent Faulkner (specifically in As I Lay Dying). Wolfe has the rare ability to get out of her own head and actually convey different modes of thought that all feel authentic, all within one scene. Just wait for the dinner scene in To the Lighthouse, it's mesmerizing.

This is really nice music from Mason Lindahl thanks for the rec both! Just Re the cryptocurrency thing definitely a super interesting space, the environmental factors are a big concern though. This was a (long & slightly ranting) but informative read for me worth checking out: https://everestpipkin.medium.com/but-the-environmental-issues-with-cryptoart-1128ef72e6a3
