Holy shit you're alive. Welcome to the fucking Midwest. Just finished The Iliad a while ago and forget what you learned in school: this was one of the most brutal and violent books I've ever read. The language of the Fagles translation is almost McCarthy-esque in its violence and long, sprawling lines, but it was being passed on (by ear no less) thousands of years before the idea of McCarthy-esque could even be conceived. The descriptions and glorification of these half naked, totally ripped men slaughtering each other, and even the gods themselves, would make Mishima blush. When they say Epic Poetry they mean it.
