Not a feel good book, but damn good.

I always thought American Pastoral was an overrated Roth novel (but obviously still really good). The characters never sat well with me. There's just something too convenient about them to the point where they start to seem like caricatures.

I had the same feeling, probably due to the Swede's 'flawlessness'. If you don't like Roth's tone, it will never fly, but as it's my first, I was impressed and just rolled with it all.

Good book, very depressing, but that's what Roth does. I've read 10 or 15 of his books, never been disappointed. Sabbath's Theater is one of my favorites of his. Check it out.
