I'm unsure on the paladin question. The only thing we know is the dm admitting to twisting the knife and the player blowing up. Very hard to be against the person reacting rather than starting it.

In the the ever smoking flask, it's a player fun + consistency question, if the player used it for flavor and the actual mechanics of it destabilized the encounter in a different direction (the oozes absorb the smoke and all are vulnerable, or something) would it still be flavor? Surely not

I really gotta bring this up because I can’t let such a big L go. When Murph referred to the “Count Dooku” lightsaber I believe he meant the iconic “Darth Maul” double bladed saber. As a prequel Stan I can’t believe he let this slip through the cracks. But as we all know those fights are just so fast he might’ve missed the detail while running to garbage fresh cat turd in hand.
Has the flanking-averse DM tried saying out loud, "Hey guys, I don't want to use the flanking rules anymore"? Or are they trying to passive aggressively manipulate the players into not doing it?

For the flankers, why not use your terrain? Elevation + cover could both change the rules in the situation and create a new challenge

Without even listening to the ruling....if your player uses a magic item that releases blinding smoke you play it rules as written. You could have just disengaged and moved away from the enemy, by using the ever smoking bottle you're trying to get an extra effect on your action. If the player was new to the game I might remind them, but to use an item incorrectly to try and get an advantage I feel they should bear the consequences of doing so
but that's not what they were doing. The DM even said I know they were just disengaging BUT...
As the fellow player subscribed to the Patreon, it is with a somber, Stone Cold heart that I vow to enact this Gandolflagellation upon my dear DM and friend and stun his ass. (PS, it takes two people to bring interpersonal issues to the RPG table - he's too kind to bring me and my batman-esque, tragic, self-pitying first character into this. But we're still playing to this day and he encouraged me into DMing our current campaign. Love you bro!)

Funny enough, it was on sight with Gandalf when Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas thought the “White Wizard” was Saruman. And I’m pretty sure after he blocked their attacks with a blinding shield of white light, Gandalf took a boxing stance and socked Legolas in the gut then punched him in the head
My first table were all Bulrics for the full 5 years I was with them. There always had a conversation before something happened. I got scolded one time when I did something without asking, and I left the table after another player DM'd me this year to say that I needed to talk to the group before I acted and my behavior was effecting his personal life.
Love the advice from the court I will take it to heart. I will learn how to get more creative with my combats and how to salsa

Though, to be fair to the setting, magic seems to have been dissappearing from that world for eons. The last big bad is a shadow of himself, and his only chance at resurrection is a ring that can merely turn one invisible The silmarillion is awash with cool magic shit that happened hundreds of years ago, but by the time you're at the Fellowship proper, that level of stuff doesn't happen anymore.

The simple solution for flanking is just use the 3e rules, +2 to hit while flanking. You can drop it to +1 for 5e with bound accuracy but it's more balanced than rolling advantage. Also pretty sure flanking is an optional rule in 5e
And as always for DMs dealing with shenanigans, if the PCs can do it, so can the monsters.

I've had the flanking problem. My solution: flanking grants a +2 instead of advantage. Players are still rewarded for strategy but it's not so good it's a mistake to not do it.
The DM with the Eversmoking Bottle was wrong. It takes an action to use the bottle and he said the player was taking a disengage action so he couldn’t do both. The DM should have told them they can use the bottle or disengage. Then if the player chose to still use the bottle the DM would be fine to rule it how they did.
