The moral of my story, as a teacher to my students: be mindful of how your choices affect those around you! Fidgeting is legit, but once someone tells you it's making it hard for them to focus, we need to find a new path. Those mesh marble things that Caldwell mentioned are the fidget I provide for students - quiet, multiple ways to fidget, and difficult to break on accident!

Murph, the BTS on D20 starstruck where you introduced the "roll a d4 up to a d20 and get the highest number on every one" game did ruin me. Its my favourite thing to do. But I never do it while narration or RP is happening, and its SO hard. No unnecessary rolling or tumbling while RP is happening. Even combat is iffy, people need to plan their turns etc. But clacking dice during RP is a no. And I love to do it.

As someone with ADHD, I think if I was the one who snapped at the dice stacker I would acknowledge that the person stacking probably needs some sort of fidget during the time he isn't being engaged. I'd go buy a nice fidget toy that is very quiet to apologize for snapping, but explain why the stacking bothered me. Then I'd give them the fidget, and ask if they could use that instead of stacking dice

It’s really funny to me that Emily zeroed in on the sound of the actual stacking, as in the soft click or a die touching another die, as the loud part… and not the clatter as all the dice fall over and scatter across the table

Idea for the distracted players that I found is fun for some I framed the dry erase battle map with a plain black frame and put an assortment of sharpies out for players to doodle on the frame. Some players just do silly doodles and some do character related designs. At the end (or whenever filled) you can seal the art and now its a memory piece from your time together

2 friends and I were marathoning one of the Breath of Fire games on the SNES and we picked up an item called "waterjr". I think loud fidgeting is fine during like, combat, but I personally try to actively listen to everyone else’s roleplay. I will admit I mostly fidget with just my hands, so I may not fully get why someone NEEDS to be stacking dice. I will also say: I was taught growing up that an apology implies you will make a conscious effort not to make the same mistake. I know not everyone interprets it the same way, but if you don’t intend to change your behavior what is the point of the apology?

Sadly my campaign ended before I could curse my barbarian with a dino tail of extreme heaviness, but I will do my duty and watch the final episode of Dinosaurs… I will report back 🫡

Every game I've ever played in has had multiple fidgeters. One of the best fidgets we've found is putty. It comes in all kinds of colors and textures, it's quiet, you can fidget with it without having to look at it ... it's pretty much the perfect D&D table fidget. If you want to stack dice, get a set of silicone dice. Solves the noise issue and you have a unique set of dice, win-win.
