There's something truly inimitable about how Murph writes and reads these surprise rounds. Like the idea of expert rapper Eminem getting nervous and farting over an inconsequential staged rap battle is so specific and uncanny. I'm hooked with each new one.

What got me listening to the podcast was Tortle Tank. What got me to subscribe was Surprise Round. I actually listened to those shows and DnD Court before any of the campaigns lol

TL;DR Surprise Round! hater back on board now ❤️ I have been one of the Surprise Round! haters Murph references. This episode has won me back. I think it was just a little oversaturated for me. I'm here for the D&D, but also *love* this crew just doing loosely-structured bits for an hour. Surprise Round! rules, I just think it hits harder when it has some room to breathe in the feed. Also, the ratio of Grinch:Not-Grinch was spot-on. When I'm not just waiting for that hat to go on top of the other hats, it's extra funny when it does come into play.

They don't ask for submissions for Surprise Round anymore, so figure now is as good a time as any to post one I had rattling around last year: You're just exiting the theatre after a live show when Murph says he's left something in the green room and will be right back. As the stage door closes, a minivan with tinted windows screeches to a stop in front of you. In the driver's seat is a man with long, flowing locks, half-rimmed glasses and a look of combined annoyance, amusement and exasperation on his face... hell, it could even be The Murph himself. He pops the back door and shouts - in a West Coast New Jersey accent - "Get in. There's no time to explain. We have to go. Now." You can hear the sound of sirens a few blocks away and across the street a couple of uniformed officers are on their radios but have yet to look in your direction. However a man in a poorly made Sonic costume standing next to them is petting a taxidermied fox and and staring unblinkingly right at you. What do you do? Your phone has no bars.

A couple of Decembers ago I was stopped at a red light and noticed that the driver waiting next to me was a man in an extremely detailed Jim Carrey-style Grinch costume and makeup. (Hell, it could have been the Grinch himself.) He did not yell or scream at me or even seem to notice me, but I was surprised at how anxious I felt as I waited for the light to turn and let him pass. My point is, you can’t appreciate how nerve-wracking it is to have a convincing Grinch driving near you until you live that experience.

if im honest, i think the eminem scenario is very out of character for him and id want to reach out privately just for the money. he treats rapping as a 9-5 job that he clocks in, gets lunch, clocks out so he has time for his daughter. hes frugal to the point of needing to ask his manager if he can get a rolex and thats later in his career. he's very well respected in the industry for being a chill guy, mostly its just shit heads that wanna take beef with him for attention (see machine gun kelly having to pivot to bad pop punk after being humiliated). If anything, the fart would be very endearing and most of the time eminem has made fun of himself the most in his own music, so theres nothing to arm against him. id just reach out and ask if theres something going on privately and he'd be probably like "aw fuck ill just venmo you" like this seems like a fuckup more from management also i can take care of myself from fans, it kinda comes with the territory, ill prolly spin it off as a youtube interview podcast or somethin

weirdly enough I had this exact experience with Tony Hawk years ago, my friends and I ran into him one Thanksgiving day when we rode motorcycles to a half-pipe in Pacifica, he did not ask us to drink a glass of salt water, but he did ask my friend if he could sit on his cool motorcycle. he’s so nice and he was skating with his kids on the holiday which is probably the better way to spend the holiday—plz add him to the NADDPOD universe 😂😂😂 But also imagining what I would do in that situation since I literally was there, if he got off my friends bike and softly said “drink this glass of saltwater to take all my powers, there’s my spaceship,” I’d honestly run away and watch him from behind a tree until he left. His star quality is too bright, I found his quiet and kind demeanor actually super intimidating, like if he was goofy and winked at me then I’d say yes. But he has this monk-like demeanor that would scare me out of taking his super serious pro-skater job 🤣

When I first went to Disney as a 4 year old I specifically hated Chip and Dale because of their scale. In the cartoons all of the other characters are humanoid size and Chip and Dale are chipmunk sized. Seeing them big was extremely off-putting.
