The 90's was ALL about "big industry" and save the trees - Fern Gully, while still a "for profit" production, it was specifically produced for environmental propaganda. Honestly, the 90\s was about recycling, anti-deforestation, girl power and androgyny...... We really did have some amazing things in the 90s... and then "she's all that" ruined it all

Its so funny that Emily and Caldwell keeps coming back to the idea that the show is deconstructing or subverting the media norms of its day, while NADDPOD subverts expectations by demonstrating that the thing they said for years (why would we talk about a good, enjoyable piece of media for Mixed Bag because it wouldn't be more funny or interesting then something bad) is patently false. Hope to see more interesting story telling from the 80s and 90s lmao

Amazing, but sadly Emily is slightly incorrect, early 90s was definitely shock doctrine. They implemented it right away in the former socialist states post 1990 end of the socialist bloc. A real disaster, unfortunately. But the show is super great, and I love them talking all about this. I just remember Dinosaurs vaguely and "Not the Momma!" I don't remember at all this insane finale for some reason.

Emily is right they absolutely did talk about an asteroid hitting, and I think they were confusing it with… land before time? There isn’t an asteroid extinction event shown in the cartoon, but Mandela effect style I imagine it lmao

My sisters and I would quote (basically vocal stem) stuff from movies and shows all the time when we were young, and a big one was we would just randomly sock each other in the arm and go "not the momma!" From this show all the time. I think about this show often despite not really remembering that much from it. It was awesome.

One of my favorite episodes from dinosaurs, there was a character named harris who had a catchphrase for an episode where he kept saying "If you know what I'm sayin" and he got the nickname Sexual Harris, but it blew up to where he was in court and the news network had the tagline "It's time to find out what Sexual Harris meant"

The new Supergirl movie has some really fun practical effects alien designs. Do recommend for practical/puppet stuff enjoyers.

I teach high school and just a few months ago I had a student unironically watching this show while she worked on her project. Dinosaurs is alive and well.

When I modded my 3DS a few years back I made sure to keep Dinosaur Office on the system. I still watch it from time to time when I boot up the console.

I grew up with this show then revisited it much later after college and I was shocked at just how well it not only held up but felt even more relevant now. The one where Robbie and Spike enlist in the army just stuck with me.

Caldwell is right by the way, the Flintstones comic from 2016 is, without exaggeration, one of the best comics published in the past decade. It’s crazy how they took this goofy 1960s sitcom and turned it into a thoughtful and very funny satire on modern issues. I’m not sure who or why they green-lit it, but I’m glad they did!

God, this makes me want them to watch Gremlins for Christmas so bad. So many puppets doing so many little bits because Joe Dante just let the cast and crew pitch throughout filming; so many potential entrants into the shittiverse. Like the Phoebe Cates monologue ALONE is so Naddpod-coded to me. And if it isn't a movie where Caldwell knows a shit ton of trivia to share with everyone, I will be flabbergasted.

For the mixed bag idea they had, they should look at the best rated episodes from both sesame Street and the zoo blue one and then watch one episode of each and compare their best episodes, also imagine if someone used ai to make a bad dinosaurs episode where they all unthaw and everyone thinks everything is gonna be ok but then the ants take over using "artificial intelligence" eh?

Damn, I had completely forgotten about the Dinosaurs series, then this just unlocked the memory. I remember as a young kid I had a cassette tape of the dinosaur voice actors reading a Dinosaur re-telling of classic fairy tales. It was done in the style of the Dad dinosaur telling a bedtime story to the baby dinosaur, and my parent would put it on for me when it was time for me to go to sleep. Apparently it was the only way they could get me to go to bed.

One thing I love about these is there will always be at least one totally insane phrase said totally earnestly that just sort of gets accepted without comment. Eleven minutes in it’s Caldwell describing an animatronic puppet dinosaur from 1994 as “a bit of a Greta Thunberg”.

The dark finale didn't come completely out of left field. I vividly remember an episode where the grandma goes to her high school reunion and learns that she's the last surviving member of her class.

If you’re worried about the death of these big budget puppet shows, Netflix did make a Dark Crystal show as recently as 2019 (still mad about it being cancelled). While the more complicated puppets from the movies that required six puppeteers have been simplified/advanced to only require two, they still are very expressive.

As someone deep in the Star Wars universe the grogu takes aren't that off. A lot of criticism has been Disney clearly settled into Grogu being a money maker and is a very static character.

Captain Planet actually returned in 2017 in an episode of OK K.O. and that episode actually was about Captain Planet and the Planeteers being disillusioned that though reducing, reusing, and recycling wasn't nothing, individual impacts didn't outweigh malevolent corporate actions and climate change, the wiki explains the villains actions as: "She introduces herself as Dr. Blight, and with her artificial intelligence companion MAL, she sells the lovestruck Boxman the idea that by polluting the planet, Boxman can make a ton of money by destroying the world. Boxman interrupts asking why she wants to destroy the world when they both live in the world.
