That kind of drill is one of two things: A screw propellor, which is exactly what it sounds like, or an augur, which is a kind of drill that scoops out material in the same turning motion that it penetrates with.

As someone who watched Gurren Lagann around the time it came out and was probably around 12/13 at the time I can confirm Adiane was one of the characters that laid the groundwork for future anime crushes lol

I think the hate you THINK you have is lead by the not even hidden misogyny that is being labeled in this episode. Yoko is allowing her emotions guide her sure but the negative emotions shes having are social pressures to preform as a women agents another whos being uplifted by if you havent noticed a 100% MALE CROWED. not to mention Yoko is canonically 14(yea ik its weird) I really hope Alicia isnt turning her brain off because of how comedic this show is to just how WOKE AS FUCK this show was for its time, I mean Che Guevara was literally referenced in this anime lmao

Progress is never linear nor symmetrical. So a lot of old works end up still being kinda difficult to watch, due to that asymmetry, even when they do have a lot of positive progress for the time. Does take some extra media literacy to make peace with that, but it can still *feel* annoying or uncomfortable, even if you understand the hows and whys of it.

Seeing party wolf having to explain the guy thing of feeling pain after seeing someone ELSE get hit in the balls to Alicia, and then Alicia explaining the female equivalent of that was hilarious 😭

Don't know if this changes your opinion, but Yoko is only 14yo here. Simon, Yoko, and Nia are all canonically 14. Kamina was "17 or 18" (even the official docs are not sure).

the exact wording was "she is from the same age generation as Simon", with people immediately flocking to the lowball of 14 for some reason even though that age doesn't line up with her mental or physical development at all. She even sees Simon and Nia as young compared to herself, so that lowball age doubly doesn't make sense.

funniest fantheory I read about this ep (and why Yoko was that much more easy to rile up) is that people guessed she might have her "days" here (one reason her swimsuit is more covering that people guess XD)

Well to be fair there was nothing Yoko could have done because she's not a hair stylist and Nia's hair was already fucked to begin with.

The haircut reaction was not something I expected, but very entertaining.
