as a certified substance hater, I want to say I feel the same way about Tusk for the same reasons, and everyone gets mad at me
I was ready to jump down Big Joel's throat for his movie takes but then he hit me with that 10/10 Planet of the Apes review and all felt right again, Big Joel is the movie understander and I should never have doubted him for even a fraction of a second.
Your media takes are always fascinating to hear, and I say this as someone who frequently disagrees with you. Would love to have this kind of movie round up every 6 months to a year!
I like this type of video for you. Some scandalous agrees, some respectable disagrees. The only one that got my goat was the apprentice. I thought that movie rocked so hard! Nice watch though
I wish you had seen Eddington!
ugh i love Your Name. granted i first watched that movie when i was 14 or 15 and i have a lot of nostalgia attached to it, but it still holds up for me. the art style is beautiful and i think it plays into its sentimentality. the boob groping is very out of place and does take me out of it tho. 8/10
My problem with The Perfect Neighbor is that it is very subtly pro-cop. Every cop seems extremely pleasant, as if they were doing all they could each of the dozen-or-so times they interacted with that neighborhood. In the end, it just feels like the cops in that documentary manage to escape that tragedy with no blood on their hands, even though there absolutely is.
Really nice video! Honestly, I'd really, really like it if there were more bonus videos like this. Not most of them for sure, but if say, every 6 months you did recommendations of the things you watched, or something like that, I'd enjoy that a lot!
I loved Priscilla and I loved Coherence. Did not think that highly of OBAA. Choosing to believe it's beautiful we all have such different tastes.
Also even having never seen it (but having just read a Wikipedia summary) I feel like a video on Juror #2 would be interesting. You're right that it's a banger-sounding plot
man, I haven't watched Hoop Dreams since high school over a decade ago, and I STILL think of it sometimes. I don't remember what happens but goddamn do I remember how it made me feel. Also thanks for not jumping on the Wuthering Heights hate-train. It was a trash movie but I enjoyed it and it's nice to see others did too
Top notch bonus vid i'll watch as many of these as you are willing to make
Dude, how does someone even end up watching Remember Me without knowing the twist? Like how else would you discover it? I'm envious because it sounds like a wild experience.
Oh lord I have to leave a third comment, this is devastating for me. But I want to say please do make more videos like this, it's enormously fun to watch and especially to disagree with a dude who makes art I love.
Sizeable Joe, giving Hamnet a 3 and Bugonia a 7 was my first anthony fantano-style whiplash moment I've had with your videos lmao. I absolutely adored Hamnet, not just for the extraordinary cinematography, but the depiction of real grief, the solace that the relationship with nature gives us, the way witchcraft is used and, most of all, the fucking love for art this movie has. It shows how art can create a connection between a destroyed grieving father and an audience of strangers, incredible. Wasn't crazy about Bugonia on the other hand, which I found a bit morally trite and uninteresting. But to each their own! I respect your opinion fully, I was just shocked by it!
Would you still have liked Marty supreme if he didn’t get his ass spanked by Mr. Wonderful with a ping pong paddle? Or is that where all 8 stars come from?
CINEPHILE HENRY WILL SAVE US
The way Big Joel feels about The Substance that’s how I feel about One Battle After Another
I’m so glad to hear other people hating Hamnet, huge hit in Ireland cause of Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal being hometown heroes, it was difficult for me to dislike it, my family and my colleagues were all rooting for it In the final scene where Jessie Buckley and the other viewers raise their hand to the sky after the actor playing Hamlet dies had me laughing so hard cause I think they were going for Clapping to bring Tinkerbell back type thing but all I could think was ‘give Hamlet your chi for his final spirit bomb’
Holy shit man, it's always such a humbling experience to realize how NOT universal media taste is. I thought that final scene was extraordinary, a stunning interpretation of the power of art and the realness of grief. I'll admit I also think you completely missed the point if you were thinking it was supposed to be a tinkerbell thing lol, to me it was a crystal clear depiction of human compassion, everyone feeling the pain that the parents were feeling. And the actor's tears! It's probably the first time in his short career that he realizes the power he holds on that stage. I was just speechless in the theater.
I am so so glad I am not the only The Substance hater. Your take is 100% on point. Their body horror was decent (we love pratical effects) but the rest was just incredibly bad, unfortunately.
but it's only 3pm. traversing space allows you to go backwards in time?
Glad to hear you enjoyed making this, because I loved watching it!
Thank God someone else hated The Substance 😭😭😭 I really felt like I was losing my mind seeing the public reaction to it! Just a phenomenally shallow and stupid movie
Your Name was like 40% a really interesting trans narrative which instead of committing to the trans aspect decided to be about town evacuation preparedness?
Makoto Shinkai is just kinda like that as a director. Suzume was supposed to be a lesbian love story but either Shinkai pussed out or he was dissuaded by higher ups (if it’s the latter I can sympathise I guess) But to be fair I really don’t like that type of anime movie with the exception of A Silent Voice, The Colours Within (and maybe Belle on a good day) that are all syrupy and emotionally vague but overly sentimental, they’re made for otaku’s moms
Glad to know I'm not alone in thinking those anime movies are overly sentimental and go nowhere. Thank you for hating Frankenstein...me and my friends felt like crazy people for thinking it was mediocre as hell as everyone else raved about it. The cinematography was pretty for some shots...that's it.
Perfect Neighbor was a fantastic documentary, totally devastating
omg this video is literally made for me
i haven’t seen priscilla but curious if you have liked any other sofia coppola movies?
The only other two I’ve seen are lost in translation (good) and Marie Antoinette (I’d need to watch it again, it seems kinda interesting but I didn’t enjoy it as a kid)
Burger king foot lettuce ass opening line
