Guest: Annibale
Recorded: November 28, 2020
The War Nerd closes out November with an episode on the Italo-Turkish War in Libya on the eve of World War I.
First, we discuss the latest pandemic news out of Italy...
At 25:33 - Annibale explains the background to the Italo-Turkish war over Libya, the war's technological innovations (and political fiascos), and how the war inadvertently lit the fuse for World War I.

Could you guys do an episode on the Economic Freedom Fighters in South Africa?
Okay I have to say.... it would be SO. GODDAMN. FUNNY. If it turned out that "China Virus" didn't come from China, it came from Europe. Not that anti-Asian racism is okay even if it did originate in Asia, but the irony would just be too goddamn delicious.
I feel like we all need to zoom in on a certain bio weapon facility in Maryland
"Every plan for a war is a plan for the war before" -- I like that. Was just reading about some mistakes Trotsky made in his thinking like that regarding WWII.
amazing episode as always! mark mentions ENI, and for anyone interested in ENI, italian control of oil in north africa, and the years of lead, i highly recommend franceso rosi's "il caso mattei"
I've listened again to the episode, and I think there's a clarification I must make. At some point, I say that Turkey did not efficiently use local support. It is (partially) valid for the duration of the actual 1911-12 war. But after the official fighting died out in Lybia, Turkey (later supported by Germany) began a massive campaign of financial and logistical support for the Senyussi movement, which from the interior of the country became a permanent problem for the Italian rule (and the French "protectorate" in Tunisia). We will discuss this development in a further episode, as the length of this one did not allow for many in-depth explanations.
My only criticism with the episode was the length. Should have been three and a half hours please.
The episodes with Annibale are better than most grad school seminars. Looking forward to this
Hell yes. I read "A Box of Sand" years ago, but I know this going to be a million times better. Excited for part 1 of a 12 part series that takes all us the way through to the Turkish coups in the 1970s.
