The History of Every Video Game Genre
Hey everyone. Here's the new episode of GMTK.
You can watch it on YouTube or Nebula, or read it as an article on Substack.
This accidentally turned into my longest and most ambitious video ever. It started with a cool idea (hey! If I made a list of games and their genres from the last 50 years I could reveal trends in each genre's rise and fall!) that snowballed into a 2 hour epic with endless research, over 170 sources and citations, more than 200 motion graphic shots, and more than 500 unique games shown as footage.
But once it started I couldn't really stop. So... here we are!
Normal service should resume soon. Digest and Mark's Month coming in the next few days. And then back to regular videos!

absolutely LOVED this video, this is quite an achievement. i would love to see the data you were working with, if it's in a shareable state, just to play with myself - understandable if it's not, though. thank you so much for this, it's gonna get plenty of rewatches from me for sure
"friendslop" should be renamed "Recess"
