Tau Day coming up!
Image: on Lens we just found a suspiciously perfect clearing full of daisies and checked one for Fibonacciness. Phone cameras and doodling apps sure make it easier to check those higher numbers!
Update: I didn't think I would get to a Tau Day video this year, because I was determined to focus on Emmy Noether without taking another "this is taking too long lets do a quicker video" break.
BUT. Last week I was on vacation/staycation with family visiting, so since I was already taking a break, it's less like cheating. And I was hoping to do that Tau Day video we talked about earlier this year. There was a poll and everything!
I'll quote what I wrote about it in the Pi Day Poll:
"I accidentally ended up with a third script draft when I was writing what started as a blog post about my 2016 Pi Day video, which I thought was a pretty thinly-veiled allegory demonstrating the ridiculousness of divisive manufactured controversy between people who are fundamentally on the same side: It's a parody of the politics going on at the time, containing lots of political rhetoric with the nouns switched out for "Pi" and other math terms.
As far as I can tell, no one picked up on that. But it's even more relevant now, so I thought maybe it was time to be more explicit about the history and intentions behind the Pi vs Tau controversy story, co-created between myself, other mathematicians and audiences, other youtubers and youtube algorithms, and how our participation in this low-stakes all-fun-and-games math fight could maybe help us be introspective about where and when we choose to exercise our suspension of disbelief."
So I already have a concept with some draft writing piles, and it is ever so relevant.
But more importantly, I just got back from a week off, and while it was a great time with my family it didn't make much of a dent in my vacation deficit. I'm still badly burnt out on a lot of things, particularly trying to figure out how to fund deep work and long projects (in retrospect it was a bad idea to take on another ambitious takes-a-while video so soon after Peace for Triple Piano while still underfunded).
A week off isn't going to fix that. Another two weeks off won't fix that. I know I should be working on merch and working on trying to get grants or partnerships and figuring out better perks and incentives and doing other fundraising activities. But after The Year of Fundraising Hell, coming on the heels of already being badly burnt out, every time I try to think about fundraising my brain become this strange blank grey fuzz as thought-free and inanimate as a stone, my entire body heavy as stone. There is only so much one can harden to working just a little longer, just a little more, before hardening entirely into this stone. I forget how to move or speak or think or feel. The wind is warm on my face and it smells gently of pine and I'm pretty sure I could sit here for two years doing and thinking and feeling absolutely nothing and maybe after those two years I'd start to get antsy and shift to brush a beetle off my thigh. There's lichen growing off my ears and the soles of my feet overturn to reveal ant colonies and pill bugs.
Fortunately, I'm not burnt out on Tau Day videos. In fact, I think it might be positively refreshing, with two weeks being the right amount of time to not be rushing and overworking. So let's get to it!

Regarding fake controversy: I'm pretty sure the people that celebrate Pi Day and the people that celebrate Tau Day have more in common than the people that don't care about either. At the risk of being outed as a wishy-washy namby-pamby flip-flopper, I'll wear my pi-themed t-shirt on Pi Day and my tau-themed t-shirt on Tau Day.
Do you want/need somebody to help with fundraising? [I could poke around and try to find somebody happy to do it for free.]
Good grief. In what flea market did you find a "Fibonacci Approved" rubber stamp? I am afraid to ask what else they had. Meanwhile, since when has time spent with family been considered a vacation? I usually need a quick pub crawl to recover. Anyway, you are the best and we have seen now that that is because you lean so hard into everything you do. Have we discussed meditation? Very restful, very centering. As for productivity, I am a huge fan but I am not sitting by my inbox waiting for anything. As I have said before, the lenses are a brilliant solution, random touches of Vi in the night.
I can understand why you would have initially wanted to focus on the Emmy Noether video, I feel the rest of us are less invested in it at this point since we don't have many details. (I'm sure it will be brilliant though, with the amount of effort that is going in to it). I'm sure a slight delay in that video will be worth it if we get a whole bonus Tau Day vid. I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't feel guilty about changing your work schedule around if it improves productivity or helps with burn out. As long as you're happy with your art, we'll love it too.
I’ve found it helpful to phone up my sister once a week when I hit that grey-fuzz-brain stage. While we chat for an hour, I do some of the more mundane yet necessary work. It isn’t so much a way to get unstuck as a way to keep plodding along.
Burn-out is common: much better to take a break before you get to that point. Writers got to give give one of their versions a name, because they're the ones who write about stuff. I assume that Writer's Burn-Out gets less press than Writer's Block because people who fall prey to the former don't write about it afterwards. Also: go Tau! Pi is sub-optimal IMVHO.
Yep! One of those unfortunate things for all artists, including writers, is it's pretty much impossible to just do your work and take breaks when needed without worrying about how to get paid, and pretty much impossible to make a living even if you do work efficiently and constantly. Patreon is the kind of thing that can help make that cultural shift, but at the moment it's better suited to small regular output than long projects, and better suited towards specific side projects than making a living and needing insurance and a retirement plan and having other people or pets in your life, and no one wants to fund artists to go on vacation. Well, except for a few of the very fine folks here! :D
I'm sure there's a good "No Deft Tern Unstoned" pun in there for you getting going again, but I've given it several seconds of thought without coming up with it, so I'll just say congratulations on getting rolling again, even on something small. Sometimes that's all it takes to build a bit of momentum...
You should take a sabbatical. I should take a sabbatical. Everyone should take a sabbatical.
Sounds perfect. Where do I apply?
