We need to talk about how to vote | with Giordano & Ellen

Dear Patrons

(I must think of something better than "Patrons" to address all of you legends in Season 3 - let me know if you have any suggestions)

Anyway, dear Patrons -

Here is the companion podcast for our latest Honest Government Ad about the impending election!

It's different to our usual podcasts. Well firstly it's my first time hosting it together with Ellen, which was a lot of fun!

But also, I wanted to do something different for this podcast, because I realised something...

We've covered so many election issues - preferential voting, hung parliaments, minority governments, etc - all of which are important things for people to know and understand.

But reading emails from people who've watched our HGAs, made me realised that there's still a LOT of folks who struggle with the very basics of how to vote.

And so as people start to vote (prepolling opened today), I thought the most helpful thing we could do with this episode of the podcast would be to help address some of the questions we've received, and help people understand the basics of how to vote.

So if you know anyone who needs it, please pass this on to them!

I also wanted to use this podcast to answer questions from people who want to make their vote count for real climate action at this election.

Thankfully, Climate Analytics published this analys just last week. It was just what I needed to help me scientifically define the terms we've often used in our HGAs: the Shit Party, Shit-Lite Party and the Not-Shit candidates on climate.

Of course, having explained how to vote, and who is not-shit on climate, I thought we'd take things to their logical conclusion and explain how to get those not-shit candidates elected using preferential voting.

So by the end of this 10-minute video, we hopefully bring people up to speed with the more complex concepts we've covered in our HGAs.

It was fun making this "explainer" type of podcast for a change. So let me know if you enjoyed it - in which case, we might make more.

Take care!
Giordano

Hey Giordano, I really loved this video/podcast and as well as uploading it to my personal Facebook page I also put it on the Peoples Climate Assembly page. However, there is an excellent guide on how to select the 'not shit' candidates for every electorate in the country. It has been developed by Vote Climate One and can be found at https://voteclimateone.org.au/ Its a traffic light system covering every electorate based on the candidate's credentials for addressing the climate crisis. It would be great if you could give this site a boost so that people around the country can check out the best way to get candidates who will work for the climate.

Bloody brilliant! Great work Juice Media team, and thanks. Currently overseas and just received my ballot papers in the mail. Better send them off asap to make sure we get a 'not shit' candidate elected :)

~ formation of our government. i. e. Civics and citizenship, but in a critical (thinking) way not in a mindlessly patriotic way.

Thank you Giordano & the whole team. I’ve been laughsnorting at your vids for quite a while and finally bit the bullet, becoming a (very small-time) Patreon sponsor (gotta spread my jobseeker love around!). What I truly wish is that we as Australians, given that voting is compulsory (which I think is bloody excellent), were given a better understanding of the structure and ~

Hi team, amazing video as always. The only info I wish was in there would be about funding - as I understand it, my first preference receives a small amount of funding making it a vital source of income for a smaller party but completely inconsequential for the shit and shit-lite parties. My daughter is voting for the first time so this kind of video is really useful. Cheers!

Good point! There's so many things to mention, but tried to keep it as straight-forward as possible. We did mention the funding in the Preferentiual Voting HGA tho :)

Are we not all Australiens under the kelptocratic mineral council regime which clearly must come from outer space considering their blatant disregard for the habitability of this planet? So Dear Australiens seems apropos as a form of address for us humans suffering under their planecidal rule.

Really great job! Here in the United States I do indeed wish we had preferential voting. Thank you so much for your fine work. The New Progressive Alliance has used it in the U.S. because many of the issues are identical. Thank you for your fine ads a while back which at least helped us elect a "shit-lite" candidate. Australia is important for the rest of the world so best of luck in the upcoming election!

We watched it over dinner with our 18yo daughter; this is her first election and she's all fired up, partly due to a steady diet of your videos no doubt. She said she found it very helpful. Great Work!

This is so awesome to hear, so glad it was helpful! Also, happy first voting to your daighter!

Already watched and commented in YouTube. "What are you doing here, you must be lost." Hahaha! 😂 Oh, Ellen, well said! You make me chuckle, if not with your barbs, but also your contagious laugh! I appreciate the education on how your system works. Wish we had preferential voting in this sh!tshow. Here we are practically forced to choose between the Shit Party and the Lesser of Two Shits Party. Either way… the result is more shitfuckery. I do think, however, that it should be prohibited for a party to try and influence one's vote with handouts at the polls. That's downright devious and deceptive. I really, sincerely, earnestly hope that your election gives you a well hung parliament to finally, decisively address the climate crisis!
